Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
Okay here's my quick overview:
My army: Nilfheim, 3x TSA, Isamu, Realin, Krav, Marro Warriors, 2x Deathreavers. I wanted to make a competetive army with the Samurai Archers. Game 1 vs fil on the lava and jungle map by Dignan. His army was Zelrig, Nilfheim, and SotM Drake, with Sonlen sidebarred. Basically, he brought out Zelrig first, and I fought him with Nilfheim, then he flew over his Nilf. I eventually took him down, and then it was some TSA and MWs against Drake. I took advantage of the fact that he could only destroy 1 marro per turn so I kept running away and cloning them. After a while I had whittled his Sergeant down to death. It was really close; I had 3 Warriors left. 1-0 Game 2 vs kildawabit on Igneous Intrusion. His army was Ornak, Brunak, Marcu, Cyprien, and Mimring, with Krug and Sonya sidebarred. He used all his heros to try to kill my rats and Nilfheim, who I had started out with. Nilfheim went crazy and destroyed a lot. Once he finally died I moved out the Krav to finish th killing. They all survived at the end of a round on lava, which helped. So once I finished off Ornak it was the end of the game. I think he would have been able to destroy Nilfheim more easily had he put in Krug, who also would have been less affected by the lava. 2-0 More to come, I can't type the whole thing at once. Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
I'll try not to be too verbose. It was great to celebrate my one year wedding anniversary with all of you. My wife was playing too, but neither of us had a great outing this time around... sigh.
I brought a 500 pt army that I've always thought was chool, but never got to play, plus 50 points: 3x Knights, Gilbert, Nilf, Marro Warriors. Sidebar was AE and Guilty. The 2 games I won were as much due to luck as any good playing. Good matchup for my army and really unfortunate rolling on the other side. Both players TheWriter and loborocket were extremely good sports though. 1st loss vs. Braxas, Q9, Krav, Deadeye on Normandy Beach. I swapped in AE + Guilty for 2 Knights. Lessons learned: Taking the low side (won my choice, but thought it would be sporting to give my younger opponent the high side) proved to be a challenge. Part of that was just not thinking when placing units... I put some figures unnecessarily in the second row of water forgetting that they would move up so slowly. Part of it was the seeming uselessness of the Intercept Order glyph... Didn't work the first time and I THOUGHT it stuck around until it worked so I sent another guy for it again... but then realized that it doesn't. Oops. I think it's possible to win this from the low side, but I'm not convinced it's balanced... I'd have to play a few more times before I really get a feel for it. Anyway, my AE did a great job on Braxas, but as Nilf flew to take down Q9, the Krav shot him up from height... Without Nilf, Q9 slowly took out everyone else. Oh well. 2nd loss vs. Legionnaires, 10th, Marcus, Ne-Gok-Sa, Me-Burq-Sa, Isamu. Lessons learned: I don't like to be rushed when I'm playing. I deliberately slowed my movement, but my concentration was still rattled and probably led to poor choices. :P No reason at all to try to kill a Ne-Gok-Sa who is pinned in place by 2 KoW. I kept trying to kill him. Of course, he never died. I could easily have "won" this game had I not tried to take him down. In the end, I lost on points by 10 points. Alas. My stupidity. Other than trying to kill Ne-Gok-Sa, I think I played this game reasonably well... but that was really stupid. 3rd loss vs. Minions x2, Anubian Wolves x2, Raelin, Krav. Lessons learned: This is a tough match-up for my army, I think. I threw my Knights at the glyphs, but they got spread out and away from Gilbert. The Krav rolled well from height and killed a bunch. By that time, Raelin had set up the Krav under their aura. I still thought that Knights on even ground and engaged with the Krav could take them out. I was wrong. I think the way I had to do this was to throw Nilf across the board to destroy Raelin and as much else as he could. My opponent would be ahead on points, but I think I could have had a coin flip chance against the remaining forces, especially if I could hold the Wound Glyph on the board... but the way the game ended, I don't think I could have won... Lost on points, but I think I would have lost the game if I'd run it out. All in all, it was a really fun day for us, though long. Thanks again to our great hosts. I'm missing the Beatdown (which is why my wife allowed us to celebrate our anniversary at the BatB. So yeah... in the end, I'm really still a big winner. I need you to be awesome. Can you be awesome?

Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
GREAT tournament. As one who's led them before, I really appreciated the organization and attention to detail. Let's just say there's a reason I'm subcontracting nyys and Benji for the upcoming Beantown Beatdown 5....
Maps - I loved overlord and highways and dieways, mainly because I felt melee had a chance on the roads to rush range. Found the map interesting where start zones are scattered around each half (it's the one I played against fil). Below is my battle report already posted in the other thread, but thought I'd put it here in the right spot . . . Knights x2 10th x2 Finn and Thorgrim KMA Sidebar - Krug and Elgrim I went 3/2 on the day. Game 1 - Lost to Kildawabit, but scored 475 at end of the day so not too shabby. He played well, I rolled fairly poorly. His Brunak had on some nano-armor or something. Many a knight ruined his blade against Brunak's hide. It finally came down to his Ornac vs. my Finn. Orcs: 1, Humans: 0. Game 2 - Victory against N/A. Played on "overlord" map. He got first round AE drop and initiative, and grenaded 4 of my figs. But then the knights rushed up the road and were able to overwhelm his rear forces. Game 3 - Loss to Superessenwein. Not to sound like a sore loser, but seriously, I don't think I've rolled that badly in a LONG time. A string of like 8-10 wiffs/1 shield against his consistent 2-4 skulls. And the more failures I rolled, and the more of my figures died, the faster Super's speech patterns became. He's a great kid and a very precise player. Game 4 - Victory against fil. Played on a funny board where start zones were scattered throughout. He had Nelph, new drake and Sonlen. I switched in Krug from my sideboard. His fury plus the knights on a +2 move glyph made for a fast game. Always great to catch up with a former parishoner. Game 5 - Victory against my son! He had Braxis, Q9, Krav and deadeye. I marched Krug quickly down roads of "highways and dieways" map and killed his entire army while only sustaining four wounds. Game was over in just 5 minutes. Freakish - never seen anything like it. I guess it made up for the bad rolling against superessenwein. We then played a friendly follow up game, and he proceeded to crush me. Good trades: Hogg, Grimfang, Onacara, Sleightofhand, 'Scaper94, orec, Snappleman, Rÿchean, lefton4ya, odbo255 |

Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
Great job Nyys, Bengi, Monkey and it was great to see everyone again and meet some new faces. I went with my Obsidian army:
Obsidians x2: 200 Major Q9: 180 Warden 816: 90 Rats x2: 80 Raelin (RotV): 80 Izumi Samurai: 60 Isamu: 10 My typical build dropped the Samurai (as expected, never used---they were in case I was lucky enough to face an all normal-attacking melee opponent), Isamu and one of Rats/Raelin. The strategy was to have the Obsidians guard Q9; the whole army staying in a tight little pod (thanks to Killercactus, I think, for persuading me that this would be a fun and viable army-style in another thread). I got better at playing it as the day went on (I didn't do any testing) and it worked perfectly in the last game against nyys. I'll post more details later, including some map feedback, but the short version is that I went 3-2 and finished 12th. |

Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
Great tournament!
My army was: Deathreavers * 2 RotV Raelin Laglor Krav Maga Agents Major Q9 No side bar, for 550 points. It did very well, although I had the luck of the dice in a few situations. I came up against an army with Q10 and Cyprien Esenwein, and I managed to get Q10 of the table rather quickly. Cyprien Esenwein disengaged my rats with his stealth flying and feasted on my Kravs, all three of them if I remember correctly. Also, on the Normandy map, a map with a lower and a higher side, I managed to grab the high side, which is very important with a shooting army like mine. Many people brought units with special attacks just to have something to counter the rat's scatter ability, which was good because many others brought rats. At the end of the day a loose rat was found and there must've been a dozen people checking their figures. The 550 points was actually very nice, as it allowed for a little more availability of bigger units. I managed to take both Raelin and Laglor, and still have points to add some fire power and rats, and that would've been tough at 500. In the championship dual against Bengi I was able to position my troops so they had range to the other side of a "lava mountain range" and kept taking long range Krav Maga shots at Sir Gilbert until I was engaged by Brunak. With a couple of bad defense throws, Brunak left the field rather quikly, then I finished off the already crippled Sir Gilbert, and the advancing knights were canon fodder. There also was a Kaemon Awa who did not manage to stay alive long. The map we played on combined the Marvel grey and black with the lava set, and it looked absolutely amazing. They are done! Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
I ran the same army on all of my matches and never actually used my alternate. I'm interested to find out if this is also true for the majority of games. Here's my army.
Main 2x microcorp 200pts 2x sentinals 220pts 1x laglor 110pts 1x marcu 20pts Side 1x Nakita agents 120pts 1x Otonashi 10pts Marcu served as a multi-purpose tool; point filler, glyph grabber and he soaks damage from the wound glyph like a pro. As you can see I had my choice of about 4 different armies using this combination for a total yet I kept using the same team every game, moslty because I felt they were the best suited combination each each game. Did anyone have a similar experience? |

Re: Battle at the Border II - Battle Reports
Quote:
But I did use it. I had a core of Obsidians x2 and Major Q9 that I used in every game. I meant to use Warden 816 in every game but had a brainfart and decided he wasn't doing much and so left him out---I lost that one. My principal switches were Raelin and Rats x2---I planned to use one of those depending on opposing army and the map and they had three games each (they both featured in the Warden-free version). Finally I had Izumi and Isamu as a counterdraft option (instead of either rats/Raelin or Warden) in case I got lucky and faced a melee normal-attacker---I didn't and so they sat on the side. |
