Trouble When Lurked Beneath by tannergxTo be fair not a fan of this map, I think it's very range friendly and the road doesn't connect to important spots. Overall the map lacks incentive to go forward imo. Still solid like not very unbalanced or terrible but just not my jam.
Uncharted Jungle by antmarchingroves: Really cool and dynamic, all the map was used, the game ended up in a crazy Aubriens Archers vs Morgrimm endgame, and I can see walking melee figures having trouble in endgame. Otherwise very solid map.
Ascension by Flash_19 Played this map a lot all over the year and it's now one of my favorites, even tho I lost a lot on it (because luck of course
). Map is huge but play fast, SZ to SZ travel is very fast and LoS blockers are very clever, a lot of very interesting spots a lot of different strategies.
Calida by superfrog Simple but effective map my game on it was melee vs melee Volcarren vs Romans, positionning was interesting, very fun game went down to last figure. Not much more to say.
Turret Rocks by Karhma: My game on it was good altho a bit slow (and got super unlucky lol), but we all know this map causes some big issues in some machups and can be extremly unbalanced.
Common Ground by Gamebear Played with a full melee blades army 2 times on it. I was worried games would be super slow but actually it wasn't, I clashed with my opponnent very fast. My games on it were good but I can see camping in SZ instances. Also the SZ dot next to glyph increase the variance of the game by quite a margin, winning the dual here gives you a suberp glyph spot esp vs full melee army. It's a solid map but with some minor flaws imo.
Highways and Dieways by UranusPChicago: We all know this map is good, it's a classic, very balanced, very dynamic. That's said imo nowadays there is better "clones" of it, for example I prefer the swamp version.
Flash Fire by Dignan I'm a big fan of this map even tho I can see why some people dislike it. I think it's the best Dignan map, and one of the best 2 hills map. Imo the LoS blockers are very effective and clever and you often have to play for both hills which makes the whole map and game very interesting. I also think the incentive to go forward and slam into opponnent is very high on this map. Yes the center isn't very interesting and cloggy but it's more a feature of the map than a downside imo and can still be relevant depending on the glyph or the state of the game.
Ynwild Pass by Sheep: Same as Ascension I played this map bunch of times throughout the year and same as Ascension I think it's excellent, it's a tad simplier than Ascension but works perfectly, all the map is used every game the map is like cut in 4 distinct zones by the ruins and the big glacier, the 4 zones are relevant, it's a very rare and very cool feature. The melee vs range balance is also perfect which is always a challenge on a TT+RotV map. Love this map.
Invasion by LongHeroscaper My last game on it was super fun with a lot of choices aswell. I was really pleased to play on this old favorite of mine after all those years. To me one of the greatest.
Song of the Walrus by Typhon2222 As I said in my WoS review while this map is solid, very balanced and have a big incentive to go forward, I think it lacks some features and interesting choices to make, especially compared to the previous versions.
Honor by Flash_19 Got destroyed in no time by Chris on my game on it (of course due to bad machup and bad luck
) so can't say much about it. But it looks like a solid map even tho I prefer both Ascension and Yngwild Pass for the moment.
Percolator by Ulysses Played on it bunch of times and all the games were super fun an dinteresting. The map offers tons of interesting choices to make. as I said in the WoS thread I think it's an excellent map and a suberp addition to WoS.
Slated by Sir Heroscape As I said in my WoS it can lead to some instances where it's very hard for melee and very one-dimensionnal. But in some games it works wonders with the big size of the map providing lots of features to play with.
Turnspikes and Burnspikes by Dignan Very cool (hot) H&D clone by Dignan, more melee-friendly than original, I think it's a great map when used in a well-thought map-pool. Even tho the fact it's melee friendly may be annoying in a double blind format.
Ice Blossom by Panopticon My game on it was somewhat good but this map isn't imo, it's a beautiful map but way too hard to cross and with way too much of terrible camping spots. You really feel the oldness of this one.
Fire Isles by YagyuNinja Again one of my old favorites, it's one of my go to maps when I want to test some stuff real fast. I think it's really good even tho it definitely has some issues, major one being the sand isles imo. My game vs Xscape on it was hilarious.
Fire Isles OEAO eidition Definitely better than original balance and competitively wise. But it lacks a bit of the salt of the original imo. I do like the sides a lot, the center with the level 2 sand, not that much I think the no-go zone here is an important feature of the original (even tho I know the endgame problems it can lead to). maybe I would make this sand level 1 I dunno.
Sidewinter by Gamebear: One of the map I play the most on over all the years, I still like it but the more I play on it the more I think dunking your figures in water and hold the hill after is by far the best strategy on this map. Sometimes it leads to slow games with low incentive to go forward but those games are very strategic.
Hellsgate by Mad_Wookie One of my favorites over the years, very popular in the french community, beautiful, fast paced, and quite balanced, my last game on it just confirmed it.
Remains of Clionesia by tannergx Played a troopers vs Cathars and a Tron mirror on this map, I was worried the Tron mirror would end up in both armies staying on the level 3 plateau and shooting from here but no once again RoC proved me wrong it was very interesting and all the map was used. Imo this map has the most clever Los blockers positionning. Tons of interesting features and spots definitely one of my favorites.
Turnmoil by superfrog: Very solid map, quite simple but still interesting and extremly balanced, not much more to say.
Playtypus by robber PLayed this map for CCL1 training and I'm not as much of a fan of it as I was before I can see situations where it becomes very cloggy and annoying to attack into opponnent even tho those situations rarely happen. Also it's quite easy for range to force melee to attack up on this map hopefully the jungle makes up for it.
Stygian Rift by Typhon: 2 more awesome games on it, this map just delivers, probably my fav my EVAR.
Venom by Flash_19: To be fair, not a fan, I think the melee vs range machups are very centered towards the level 3 triangle just outside of startzone. Also the level 3 double grass hex next to the beach is an excellent Majors and Dragons, spot and not easy to attack into.
It's still a solid map, but not one of the best in my opinion.
Aeon by Flash_19 Much more of a fan, the best single RttFF+RotV imo. Very well executed two hills map with tons of interesting features, balanced range vs melee machup, interesting road that leads to insteresting spots. I love.
Battelfield23 by Flash_19 Once again great and solid map, the whole map is used almost every game, very dynamic, quite melee friendly but with good spots for range around the edges, which incent ranged to move out of SZ, I love.
Canary by superfrog: I played this map extensively for Vcheese prep and ended up not playing it in the tournament LOL. As I said in my WoS review I think it's a great map, obviously melee friendly but still with interesting features for range as my Vcheese prep showed me.
Wyrmwalk by Panopticon To the general opinion the best competitive map, and my game on it this year did not disappoint, always a pleasure to play on this map.
Frostmire by Flash_19: Solid map, most of the games I played or watched on it were absolutely excellent, but some were disapointing, with the whole game focusing around the send heights near SZ and the whole game being very static, I need more games on it to have a strong opinion.
Murky Waters by Robber: Interesting map with a lot of features, but too range-friendly imo, the map is very hard to cross and the road isn't very helpful. Also SZ camping seems quite effective on this map, not a fan.
Bad Moon Rising by Gamebear: Hmmm not as much as a fan of this map as I was before, it is still a extremly good map but the more I play gaes or watch games on it the more I see the level 3 plateaus draw all the attention, compared to games in the past.
Ticalla Sunrise by Gamebear: Always a pleasure to play on this classic. Age like wine.
Desolate Courtyard by Rainydays Simple but effective map, I like it, not that many strategic choices, but just enough to make the game interesting. I love this map.
Nomanisan by Sheep Superb and very original map, works wonders in some cases, unfortunately can be very harsh in some machups, see my WoS review.
Betelguese by Sir Heroscape Honestly I was very surprised by this one! Super interesting and dynamic map! My games were all excellent with lots of plays all around the map. Lots of very original features aswell. Eager to play more on it!
Blackberry by superfrog PLayed in CCL and in practice, I think it's a very solid map but I think the plays are sightly too obvious and the map isn't that dynamic (see my WoS review).
Morning Skirmish by Cleon This map is fine, and quite original, but I do think the strategic options are somewhat limited and that the grass side is not very relevant.
April 8th OEAO edition: I'm quite salty about my game on it so I may be biased. The map was great for the game I played on it but I think in some other machups there is some very abusable spots and it can have the "Yours and mine" hills problem. I need to play more on it.
Odin Wept by Typhon: This was a Braxas sweep game so not much to say, but it looked interesting.
Stevachan by Shurrig: Very cool map with a layout that's quite original for modern maps, really loved my game on it not much to say for now, eager to play more on it!!
Clear Cut by superfrog: Got another Braxas onslaught on this map, so difficult to judge it but it looked very interesting and original!
Dark Fulcrum by Gamebear: I'm not a fan of original Fulcrum but I think this map is miles ahead in terms of gameplay and balance. It offers a lot of different choices for such a small map.
Origin by Flash_19: As I said in my WoS review to me this is the best single RotV map, I was worried it would be too range friendly but axtually I think it is very balanced. Dynamics and choices are super interesting especially for a single set map, awesome map!
Hydra by Shurrig: This is a really cool H&D clone, as OEAO said in his presentation of the map the level 3 makes the dynamics of the map very different from H&D and imo better in most cases. I really love it.
August 2nd by BiggaBullfrog: Interesting map, very original, quite range friendly in my opinion. The game I watched or played on it were good but I feel the play are sometimes obvious on this map. Still a very solid map.
Apocalypse Now by Typhon2222: I played this map extensively for CCL practice (even tho I ended up not playing lol) and in some more casual games, I love the look and I think while not being extremly complicated it leads to very dynamic and fun games, I love it for now need to play more on it.
Dry Peaks by SirHeroscape: Played this map also for CCL practice, and I'm not a fan, I don't like the single perches and I think overall the map makes it too easy for range player to force melee to attack up.
TwistedCistern by Ulysses: Very very cool map loved my game on it even tho I lost. Some parts can clog up but I do feel that's not that much of a problem cause often you can just move around and findanother way, need to play more on it!
Viney Pines by Shurrig: Hmmm to be fair, not a fan, the position of the center hills may results in "yours and mine" situation and those heights are a chore to cross if you you want to advance towards opponnent SZ. The road is very very serpentine and hance doesn't help much and can be quite easily block to setup a fortress hodgepodge near the big tree and level 2.
