The Book of Wyvern
Champions of the Forgotten Realms - Collection D1 (11) - "Fury of the Primordials"

Character Bio (from Truth's front-page description) :
At 100 points each, it’s easy to see an army built around a few of these perched on height, waiting to swoop down and disrupt any strategy!

-Rulings and Clarifications-
Talon Grab : & Disengagement Attacks:
Q:
If a Wyvern engaged with one enemy figure uses TALON GRAB to move that figure, will the Wyvern still take a leaving engagement attack for beginning the Move?
A: Yes. While the spirit of the ability is "grabs figure and flies away," the actual gameplay mechanic is "Moves, then summons any one figure passed over to an adjacent space." (confirmed by )

Talon Grab : & Engagement Strike:
Q: If a Wyvern uses TALON GRAB to displace a figure with the ENGAGEMENT STRIKE Special Ability, is the Wyvern or any other figure adjacent to the displaced figure after its displacement subject to an Engagement Strike?
A: No. The wording of the ENGAGEMENT STRIKE Special Ability begins "If an opponent's Small or Medium figure moves adjacent to . . ." No figure is moving adjacent to the figure with EG if it is displaced by TALON GRAB (and the Wyvern is too big to be hit anyway).

Talon Grab : & Figures on 6th, 7th spaces of Move:
Q: Does the Wyvern technically "fly" over its landing space? Can it move an enemy figure forward with its 7th move?
A: The Wyvern must be able to end its movement before placing the carried figure. The Wyvern CANNOT grab a figure on the 7th space of its movement. Also, it may only grab a figure on the 6th space of its movement if it switches the leading end of its movement and backtracks, enabling it to end its movement. The Wyvern's movement must end before the grabbed figure is placed.

Q: How do Uncommon Heroes work?
A:

Re: The Book of the Wyvern

They Wyvern is absolutely destroyed by the wind glyph. Not only can he not fly, but he can't use Talon Grab either. He becomes a big walking target.

Re: The Book of the Wyvern

I think this guy really makes the spiders more playable. In the past it was so hard to keep the little guys alive long enough to activate their special ability, but now you can fly the Wyvern in and grab your opponents figure and bring it back towards your spiders. It will make it easier to get 3 spiders adjacent without getting shot, and guarantee multiple attacks on a figure. With the addition of Etivera and the Wyvern the spiders may get more play time.

Agreed, and the fact that the Wyvern is Uncommon really helps out this strategy. With multiple Wyverns lurking, it makes it hard for an opponent to keep the high profile heroes out of the way. The tricky part is taking the right turns with the right Wyverns.

Not a problem! Since wyverns are predators, you can just throw an order marker on the spiders and take a turn with whichever wyvern you want.

I'm kind of thinking with three or more predators in one army, it might be worth 40 points to get a squad of spiders to sit in your starting zone just to make order marker management a lot easier.

Re: The Book of the Wyvern

Yeah, way back in the pre-release discussion thread I discussed the idea of just sitting one spider way at the back of your start zone. That way you would be sure at least one spider would always be alive to give the Wyverns the OM flexibility.

Re: The Book of the Wyvern

So what would be the proper Wyvern-Spider ratio?

I kind of think it is number of wyverns +1= number of spider squads.

1 squad of spiders is just a pain. They almost never survive long enough to get to use their web special. The Wyvern helps quite a bit by being able to bring back something for them to try it on, but at soon as one dies, you're out of luck. Drafting at least two allows you to lose a couple and still be able to use their web special. It also allows you to send out five and leave on sitting in the start zone to manage predator order markers like Warlord Alpha said. With a wyvern to deal with, I doubt an enemy is going to worry about the spiders until the wyvern is gone, or unless they are engaged to a spider and don't want to chance a disengagement hit. That said, I think anymore than one squad of spiders per wyvern (after the extra one for casualty purposes) is too much. You'll end up with a bunch of spiders sitting on the field with no more predators to bond with.

Of course, if you bring Estivara along, Spiders get boosted up to where they may offer a threat to enemy figures, and the ratio could then be altered accordingly.

Re: The Book of the Wyvern

I would love to see these guys against an Ashigaru/Kato army. They would pick up Kato and take him out of LoS of most of the Ashigaru, and watch the farmer army fail. Keep flying him back towards the start zone and eventually you will kill him, and then the Ashigaru will split like a banana. Man, I can't wait till my B-Day. 10 more days and I finally get my stuff.

I like the following:

1 Wyvern = 2 spider squads
1 Wyvern + Venoc Warlord = 2 spider squads if you have more scouts (read: Vipers or Mohicans), 3 if not.
1 Wyvern + Estivara = 3 squads
1 Wyvern + Estivara + Venoc Warlord = 3-4 squads, depending on other scouts
Sujoah = unplayable now that Wyvern and Estivara can be played in the same army for less than him and do nearly exactly the same thing, except they also grab people and boost the Spiders' attack.

Oh, alright. You can take your Wyvern along, and I'll take X17.

Now that I think of it, how would that work? COULD an enemy wyvern even carry Major X, or would it's movement be stopped by Improved Cyberclaw?

Your curiosity will be the death of you....
