I didn't find any historical references. But maybe a C3V designer would have a better answer.

We came up with something that sounded cool.

I haven't played with these guys before. Looking at them without special powers, it seems that I could play Obsidian Guards with the Warden and I'd already have a 4/4 squad with 5 move. (Plus the option of range) Like I said before, I have never played these guys before, so I guess I haven't seen the power of their surge.

Activating 4 figures every turn is a HUGE upside to the Blackgaard. In higher point games, the Blackgaard can easily overwhelm lower-stat opponents. It feels like it does playing the Gladiator "Steamroller" when that happens.

The Obsidian Guards are a 3-figure squad. That makes a huge difference.

Only things I have against them are high point cost and a lack of bonding.

KoW = 17.5 points per figure
KoB = 30 points per figure
Almost double value!

I don't think it's very thematic that they don't bond with Sir Hawethorne. He is (In my opinion) their leader.

4A/4D stats are really, really good. It's fairly common knowledge that 4 is the sweet spot for defense, but 4 attack is also the point where you start to roll 2 skulls more often than not, and 2 skulls is the squad killing roll. The Blackgaard are pretty comparable to the Capuans IMO, but I guess people say they are overpriced too.
