I'm typing on an HP dv9308nr.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...dv9000z_series

I picked it up at Best Buy but that's onlt the last part of my story...

I initially just wanted a pretty decent laptop, big screen, good memory, processor(s), etc... I picked up a toshiba (I can't tell you which, but it was about $1100. I took it home, and tried it out. I was disgusted by Windows Vista. I decided to wipe the drive and start from scratch with XP. I purchased a license over the net and installed Vista. long story short: No sound drivers existed in XP for my card. back to the store it went.

Picked up my HP, transition went smoothER, I spent a full day tracking down all the correct drivers for my devices which I then sent al list of to HP Support and they posted online. everything works, and NO VISTA! YAY!

If I had one suggestion for you, it wouldn't be the Specs of the notebook, just make sure when you order it, it comes with XP.

How dare those jerks at Toshiba sell you a laptop with Vista installed that was designed to work with Vista?!? That's just horrible!

You don't design hardware to work around software.

You do if you want it to work right. Why not complain that the jumpdrive you bought doesn't work with Windows 98 while you're at it. There's lots of new hardware coming out that XP can't use. If you want to use XP, then you would make sure what you get works with XP (or NT or...). I'm just saying it's a little picky to complain because a laptop made for Vista has components that aren't reverse compatible with an OS it's not made to run. If you want to run XP, then choose a computer that's fully compatible with XP, that's all.
