Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
Don't know why I'm bothering to reply. It's been said before. But I just gotta.
Chess, Go, Backgammon, Heroscape. All take minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. The more complex the rule book, the less complex the strategy that players use. I've heard this stated a million times about Heroclix--experienced players can't remember the rules. So how can they be using complex strategy? I wouldn't play warhammer, so I can't say from personal experience, but I know that this is true from many other games I've played. Next time you see him ask him what games he plays, then ask him if he has memorized all the rules. When he says no, ask him how he develops strategy. But be prepared to run, these people who play second rate games can be kind of touchy. |

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
I was a warhammer guy, I have just ordered my HS stuff so I have no idea how it plays, but I can tell you why I got out of WH.
First, the cost (money/time). You can sink thousands of dollars into warhammer and still only have 2 armies to push around. You have to spend hours and hours or more money to get painted figs and then you better be willing to spend either more money or more hours building terrain. Sure, the figures are awesome looking, but considering that the most frequent paint job is a few blobs of color and a heavy blackwash most of that detail is lost. Second, we call it the cheese factor. GW is out to sell figures, when a new fig is released (or especially a new set of figs) the rules tend to drift toward those figures. Dangle the cheese in front of a power gamer and you get sales. Last point is the constant changes GW likes to make, I have no idea what the game is like today, but it doesn't even come close to what it was 20 years ago when we first bought in. The reason we looked into HS was first a game in a box. We get painted figs, rules, and terrain in one go for a decent price. The concept of a simple but balanced rule set is very much what we were looking for. Our concept of HS is that we can pick up and play a game on a Sunday afternoon or we can plan out a massive hours long battle if desired. |

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
I've played a lot of RPG's and Table-tops, and have to say that HS was one of the easiest to learn the basics of...after that, it's like any other strategy game - you need to play it a LOT to learn all the ins and outs...
It's been said a few times in this thread already, but ease-of-learning does not always mean simple... |

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
Considering the number of college and university professors and other professionals with doctoral and other advanced degrees who play HeroScape, and considering the number of bright kids who also play it, and considering the number of regular guys who play and love HeroScape, I'd say it is "first rate" just for it's versatility of appeal, if nothing else. (Of course, I think it is first rate for a lot more than that; but the demographics of our constituency says something impressive and important about HeroScape.)

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
I wouldn’t put any stock in what your local comic/gameshop owner thinks. Who cares what he thinks? Do you enjoy the game? Do the people you play with enjoy it? That’s all that matters. Everybody on this site (myself included) is going to say Heroscape is a great game, it’s deceptively strategic and loads of fun with endless possibilities for battlefields and armies. If we all didn’t feel this way we wouldn’t be on the site. I, like others, have played many different strategy games. From Warhammer to Chess. From Blokus to Wings of War. Heroscape ranks right up with the best of them. As far as supporting this game snob by buying from him, I say get it where it’s cheapest. If that place happens to be this schmuck’s store, then so be it. If he continues with the snide comments about the simplicity of Heroscape or how he could learn it in five minutes, so what? You know different. We all know different. As Oni said:
Hmmm. Sounds like golf. Let it slide and move on, brother scaper. Although, there is merit in Uprising’s advice. Wise man, that Uprising. |

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
I could probably teach that guy Texas Hold 'Em in 5 minutes, too if he didn't know how to play. I'd then happily sit down across from him and play for $100.
The game is simple to learn, but far from simple to play. I'd rather rely on my mind to come up with strategy than 100 pages of rulebook. Like battle reports? Click Tourney Reports (New 10/21/2012 - Cutters / Brutes!) KC's Maps Click KC's Customs Scaper of the Week #57 |

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
A lot of nerds have spent a lot of time playing terrible games with verbose rulebooks. Putting down simpler games makes them feel a little less bad about themselves.
[What did I just do though? Hmm... ] The easier a game is to learn, the easier it is to play the actual game, where everyone is on equal footing. If you only win a game because it takes 2 hours to play, and you've played it 30 times, and everyone else is brand new, grats? |

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
Oh, poppycock! I think we need to find ways to make Heroscape more complicated. I suggest you should be required to bounce a ball under the table with your left foot while balancing your opponent's turn markers on your forehead throughout the game. If that's the only way Heroscape will gain some respect, I'm all for it...

Re: Heroscape 2nd Rate?
I've heard this kind of story several times... Who are these FLGS managers who trash people's taste in games? That's just plain bad business. No wonder those kinds of retail stores are having trouble staying profitable. In the FLGS I frequent, there are all types of people who enjoy all types of games, and there's none of this elitist snark and tearing people down because they don't play "your" game. What an unhappy bunch of people.
I don't know if it's even fair to drag Warhammer into the discussion - the guy may not even play Warhammer, he might just be ignorant. Quote:
Good news everyone, the Warhammer crowd might start liking our game. Let's all breathe that collective sigh of relief! |
