So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
After hearing about someone making a war game based off plastic army men, I became interested in the game, until I seen the $20 price tag. While that's probably a fair price for the game, I decided I could make one for free and enjoy it (plus I don't have $20).
So I set about making one yesterday, and much to my surprise, I actually did! The game is based on simplicity and flexibility. You are able to make your own units by selected one or two "traits" that determine what weapon the figure has and any other features of them. The list of traits is actually pretty slim, but should accommodate for many different types of characters. The rules are quite lightweight, but I think they are able to accommodate for most situations. The manual is still in its rough stages, and I know there are areas that need to be rewritten/clarified, but unfortunately, I don't know how to word them better. Its so much easier to just call back to what I have in my mind than it is to check up on the written parts. :P Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play test it because A. I live out in the country with no one near for miles and B. my brother is lame and apparently doesn't like to play boardgames, despite all those D&D books, other RPG systems, and miscellaneous card and board games he has collecting dust... So I was wondering if anyone could check it over, tell me what parts need clarifying (and hopefully how it can be better worded) and people's general opinion on it. Also, if this looks a lot like an existing war game, could someone point me to it? I'd be interested. :P Updated 9-04-10: http://www.4shared.com/document/mfaP...x_Warfare.html I want to know if this looks like something worth polishing, or does it not seem like a very good system and my time would be better spent elsewhere. Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
Interesting. Didn't read through it completely(just skimmed) but you have a few ideas there. The only thing I would change is that move everything rule. I'd say move 2 or 3 pieces or make a chart of extra costs to take a turn.
Example: 1 piece//0 extra points per fig 2 pieces//1 extra point to take a turn per fig 3 pieces//2 extra points to take a turn per fig etc. ............................ I also made a game that required intense levels of luck and strategy. If you'd like to try it out and maybe play with your brother would play. Though I used Legos to make it myself, colored paper pieces will work just as fine. I might just put the file into notepad(yes anybody can open it as all word processors). It's extremely balanced and has been thoroughly tested. My customs. NE Ohio Tourney - TBA SW Ohio Tourney - NHSD 550 points AotV - Colliding the minis of AotP with the world of HS. |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
Yeah, I can go with a change to move every figure rule. How about for every five army points you can move 1 unit?
I wasn't really sure on that part, I think that change will work. An average 15 point army will probably have about 3 figures anyways. I also largely suspect that the weapons will need some point value adjustments before too long too. I'd be interested in trying out your game! Sounds like fun! By the way, thanks for the quick response! |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
It certainly isn't a wargame by the description of yours, though it is more like CTF and involves little soldiers(or knights I guess) moving around on a special map(not a grid however) going after the great crown in the middle of the map and trying to bring it bact to their king.
I'll work on it later. Maybe My customs. NE Ohio Tourney - TBA SW Ohio Tourney - NHSD 550 points AotV - Colliding the minis of AotP with the world of HS. |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
Ok, sounds cool! I got plenty of plastic knights I can use as minis. :P
By the way, does anyone have a better, simpler, catchier name suggestion for this? Last edited by Captain Xavious; August 30th, 2010 at 06:09 PM. |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
It looks pretty clear to me. I don't know when I'll be able to play it though, but I really want to!
Also, I'm updating my file. Should be changed within half an hour (link will remain the same). Added in a trait for Large figures and the traits to lay mines and detect mines (one trait for each). EDIT: File updated! Last edited by Captain Xavious; September 2nd, 2010 at 09:58 AM. |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
I don't really think that adding in the 1 +CP cost is a good idea for large people. It's not like a giant moving in their own body will be exhausted because their used to their own body.
Somehow I think that mines aren't truly difficult to avoid unless the map is relatively tiny. Of course some tests will determine that, but that's just my 2 cents My customs. NE Ohio Tourney - TBA SW Ohio Tourney - NHSD 550 points AotV - Colliding the minis of AotP with the world of HS. |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
I'm not quite sure what you mean there. But for the record it was designed primarily to be a trait for vehicles. A tank would probably have Large, Armored, and Bazooka. It gets one extra point for attacking, but won't move as fast.
On the other hand, a Jeep would have Large, Lightly Packed, and either Machine Gun or Melee Specialist (for ramming, I guess). It would have the same base speed (+1 CP and -1CP for move), but the Lightly Packed trait allows for one extra movement, and it should naturally have extra armor, being a vehicle. Basically, all the Large does is be an inefficient (but hopefully balanced) way to get either an extra instance of Armored or Lightly Packed (or both). If you don't want two instances of one of the abilities the Large trait mimics, you're definitely better off not getting it, as its much cheaper (Armored + Lightly Packed + Encumbered = 3 points while large is the same and = 5). As for the land mines, I think it could really affect the field, so long as there is terrain and such. A 4 inch diameter circle is a pretty large area, and at the very least, it diverts them to a direction you want them to go. It helps establish board control. But really, I just wanted a way to make those Mine sweeper guys useful. |

Re: So I just made a miniatures war game yesterday
I see about the vehicles...
Anyways, I think it would just depend on how the mine people were played. If someone brought 1 and it gets killed immediately, maybe one mine will get placed. I just don't think he will be all that powerful is all. But of course I could be wrong My customs.
