Chicagoland December Tiny Tourney Report

I participated in the Chicagoland Tiny Tourney earlier today. It was my first tournament, and I am proud to have won with a record of 10-3. The format was basically open play, playing each opponent once. I think I was the only one to face everybody but since I had the most wins I was declared the winner. I was originally going to play a Viper army but on Friday, I decided that it would've gotten crushed in more games than it won. I went with Tor-Kul-Na despite only having 2 squads of Nagrubs and never having played him before. I did amazingly well though. It was a great experience and definitely leaves me excited for future tourneys. My army for the tourney: Tor-Kul-Na, Marrden Nagrubs x2, Krav Maga Agents.

Game 1:
Opponent: vegietarian18
Army: Zelrig, 3x M-43 Resistance Fighters
Map: Raknid (modified)

The game started out with me not realizing Zelrig could hit my start zone. He fried half of my Nagrubs with his special turn 1. As he also grabbed the best height it was a hard fight from then on. The Krav shot at Zelrig and I think they managed a wound. some exchanges of fire and eventually TKN killed Zelrig. The M-43 Fighters came forward and after a bit of fighting and a few deaths, managed to take down a 3 life TKN in one shot. After that it was a cleanup operation. LOSS.

Game 2:
Opponent: Paul
Army: Hulk, Isamu
Map: The Wall

Hulk jumped the Wall the first round and killed a Krav. I pulled everybody back away from height because Hulk has much better maneuverability than TKN. TKN landed some big hits over a few rounds. Hulk killed him with a huge hit but a nagrub got lucky and finished the job. Isamu missed his first Vanish roll against a Nagrub on height. WIN.

Game 3:
Opponent: vegie's dad
Army: 4x 4th Mass, Myrrdin
Map: Darkened Spring

The fighting mostly centered around the glyph in the center. The Krav started out killing 2 soldiers on the edges but were otherwise ineffective. TKN plowed through the middle and began to wreck the starting zone but was taken out again while having 3 health. He had been rolling amazing on defense before that though so I'm not complaining. After that the 4th killed the remaining Krav. Myrrdin did nothing. LOSS.

Game 4:
Opponent: The Bearded One
Army: Nicolas Essenwein, 3x Preybloods, 3x Deathstrikes, Marro Warriors, Isamu
Map: The Winning map.

I got the initiative and my Krav climbed the ladders. 2 dead MW later and his first 2 OMs were basically useless. The Krav finished off the MW on the second turn. Due to my massive height advantage he was forced to send Nic out early but the Krav rolled amazing and took him down despite losing 2 agents. I sent TKN down the road and he smashed up the Thralls. A good roll on Blood Hunger brought him down though. Nagrubs managed to finish off the last few Thralls. Isamu came out and rolled amazingly for his Vanish. He was trying to get my Krav but he rolled poorly on his attack and Vanished down the ladder. He forgot he could Phantom walk and gain height on the Krav who was on the highest ladder rung for vision. I positioned my Nagrubs around the ladder so there was no room for Isamu and his Vanish finally failed. Isamu almost won that game for him since I had 3 Nagrubs and one Krav left. WIN.

Game 5:
Opponent: vegie's younger sister
Army: Quahon, 3x Greenscales, Isamu
Map: Raknid (modified)

Quahon flew into swamp water T1 and the Krav responded by gaining height and killing her with rolls of 3, 3, and 4 skulls. The rest of the game was extended cleanup. WIN.

Game 6:
Opponent: Unseen Shadowz
Army: 5x Drones, Kaemon Awa
Map: ???

The Krav moved out and grabbed the glyphs. They killed a few drones but eventually were killed off. US said he had very little experience against TKN and it showed as I landed more than my fair share of stomps. I don't remember how the end of the game went but I think TKN killed everything. WIN.

Game 7:
Opponent: I.S.B.3
Army: 1x Fen Hydra, Zetacron, 6x Beakface Sneaks
Map: Boiling Jungle

Zetacron moved up and in 2 turns put 2 wounds on TKN. The Krav finished him off and rolled ridiculously against the Hydra. They pulled back to the glyphs and TKN rolled through the Sneaks. WIN.

Game 8:
Opponent: Infectedsloth
Army: 3x Warforged, Racheim
Map: ???

The Krav moved onto the wall on the left side of the map and did 1 or 2 wounds to Racheim. He flew into the middle and TKN came after him but he flew onto the wall. The Krav held out for a round before dying. I finished off everything but Racheim and 1 Warforged and he got everything but TKN. The Warforged was holding the glyph in the center but moved away to avoid TKN who was posing in the center of the wall. I moved down but was afraid Racheim could outmaneuver me due to the wall. HE sent the Warforged to engage me and Racheim began to shoot and use Wannok to wound me. I tried to stay where I was to bait Racheim into staying until the end of the round where I could win initiative and close the gap but it turns out that I screwed up and was alreadyw inning initiative so he got a free shot off. I killed the Warforged with Trample the nest round and he had left Racheim a bit too close. TKN rushed in and engaged Racheim. I didn't manage to kill him and I was afraid of the Triple Attack with height but he barely didn't kill me. I got him the next round. Very, very, very close. WIN.

Game 9:
Opponent: vegie's sister
Army: 5x Phantom Knights, Marcu
Map: ???

TKN rolled through the map and stomped the PK's. Not the greatest positioning or attack choices by my opponent. Lot's of stomps and not much else. WIN.

Game 10:
Opponent: Shedim Kabal
Army: Airborne Elite, 3x Havech Eradicators
Map: ???

AE dropped first turn but I won initiative and the Krav killed 2. The lob killed only 1 Krav due to me scattering the Nagrubs throughout my startzone. After cleaning up the AE, TKN came forward with some Nagrubs to engage the Eradicators. Good placement in a choke prevented stomps and it was a tough battle. TKN eventually proved victorious surviving tons of attacks and crushing through the Marro. WIN.

Game 11:
Opponent: BenQ
Army: 3x Phantom Knights, Cyprien, Kyntela Gwyn.
Map: ???

I chose a relatively open map but Cyprien is such a bad match up for TKN and Ben positioned smartly. This was the only game I didn't send out the Krav first. TKN went out to try to kill Cyprien while all the OMs were on the PKs. I left the grubs behind because they can heal Cyprien just as easily as me. This was a mistake though because they would've been absorbing attacks aimed at TKN. I got engaged by PK after PK and eventually TKN broke through HE got engaged to Cyprien on even ground but my good rolling finally caught up to me and Cyprien killed him after about 2 rounds of fighting. The rest of the game was extended cleanup as the Krav were hunted down. LOSS.

Game 12:
Opponent: Swanky Samurai
Army: 2x Fen Hydra, Kaemon Awa, Otonashi
Map: ???

The Krav moved out and took the Attack and defense glyphs in the center while the 2 hydras moved up on opposite sides. I shot the Hydras down in 1 round, Kaemon and Otonashi the next. TKN and his buddies never left the startzone. WIN.

Game 13:
Opponent: BenQ's noob
Army: Frost Giant, Raelin, Isamu, 2x 10th
Map: Cold Dungeon

The Krav moved out and killed the Giant and Raelin. TKN moved up the other side and got caught in a choke by the 10th. I'm not sure she even realized what she was doing but TKN was completely unable to stomp. He was on height though and his defense held up while the Krav swept in through the back to kill the rest of the army. WIN.

Vegie had an advantage over you here, since we were talking just before the tourney about how I usually make maps so that Zelrig can hit the front row, because I think he should be very scary to massed commons. With your small army, you would have been able to avoid the Z-Bomb altogether if I'd mentioned that tidbit to you, too.

Nice work, congrats. Always nice to see another stompy afficionado out there.

If I was going to play TKN at that event, I would probably have played TKN + grubsx3 + Marro Warriors + Marcu. Fills the hex max exactly, and gives me the third squad of grubs, which I find to be very useful. I personally don't like playing the Krav without Raelin, although I recognize that it can work very well.

Another army I would have strongly considered in that format is Raelin+Marcus+MBS+Romansx3. Again, using the full 16 spaces, a great build against opposing melee, and pretty solid against most ranged armies (that 4thx4 would be trouble though).

PKx5 + Guilty is another good one, along the lines of what I did at Gencon lightweight. They're a good way to dominate those damn ranged builds. Laugh at the 4th as you take them down.

Stingersx5+Raelin is the obvious supercheese, but I've never brought stingers to a tournament. Ratsx3+Raelin+Q9... OK, I have brought that to a tournament.

I wanted to bring 3 squads of grubs but only had 2. I also considered bringing Eldgrim and Raelin but decided a tough ranged squad was a better option. One of my Marro Warriors was broken though, and I don't own Marcu so that was out of the question.

Before that I was going to bring Mittens, 3x Venocs, and 2x Armocs but decided that it was too weak. I wanted to avoid cheese but at the same time bring a tough army.

Oh, okay. Didn't know the limits. Anyway, I was saying that if you were going to use Vipers, that was what you needed. More Venoc Vipers.

That' why I decided against the Viper Army. With hexes limited, the Vipers just wouldn't get it done.

I wouldn't have played TKN at this tournament. I think that you need at least 440 points for an effective TKN army.

That Roman build was my GenCon army (minus a squad of Romans and Marcu), and I probably would have played it had I been going for the tournament victory. It's very strong overall actually. I only ever "lost" one game with it (Game 5 of GenCon), although I did go 3-2 because of a loss on time that could have gone either way. The one loss came due to me horribly misplaying MBS, and then freaking out and overplaying Raelin to try to save him, and then losing both of them. But otherwise, it won every GenCon game and all twentyish practice games that I played it in.

PKs x5 is what my sister played, but with Marcu instead of Guilty. That's probably the strongest build for this format. Proof: My sister didn't know half of the rules of the game or any of her opponent's figure's powers, and she went 6-3.

I didn't think of that Stingers build, but I had the same thing on my army list with Redcoats but never tried it out. You could take any army from GenCon Lightweight and plop Raelin on it for this tournament and have a pretty good build.

As for Vipers, they were my backup army too. My build was Venocs x4, Venoc Warlord, Zetacron, and Kira Jax. I found it incredibly inconsistent though. Maybe I'm just bad at playing Vipers.

When playing Vipers you can win some games by skill but against most good players you probably need Frenzy to come through.

Regarding the PKs, as you can see one of my losses was to PKs with Cyprien, though Cyprien did all the heavy lifting. PKs are strong though. Against your sister I feel like if a better player had been playing the army it would've been much closer.

I'll preface this by saying this tourney was way more fun than the last one. I was way more comfortable, and was just wandering around talking to everybody because I finished 5 games while they were all still on 2 or 3. None of my tournament games were really noteworthy, fun sure, but I don't really feel like typing up a report. I did play an awesome game of Raelin Must Die with Shedim Kabal though.

I took Gladiatrons x2, Fen Hydra x2, Sahuagin Raider and he took Eltahale, Cyprien, Sonya, Deathreavers x2 on Icky Thump.


It started out with us both sending our screening units out. Second round he brought out Cyprien and I moved out a Lawnmower. I had an OM on the Glads which I was going to try to use to get a Cyberclaw on Cyprien, but I was a space out of range of getting to him. My Hydra also ended up a space away from being in range to Reach, and it suffered a wound. Cyprien then landed next to my Raelin but over the course of 3 turns only got 2 wounds while the Hydra butchered him.

I then sent a Hydra across the board, but Eltahale killed it taking 2 wounds in the process. I got rid of her pretty quickly with my other but sustained 3 wounds. At this point a bunch of people were watching the game, and everyone was cheering for Shedim. I got him down to one rat and Sonya, with a Hydra able to hit Raelin. He put his OMs on Sonya and the Hydra killed her first turn. It also put 3 wounds on Raelin. I decided to bring my Sahuagin Raider across the board for the kill. It made it's way across the board, but Raelin got 2 attacks in on an init switch killing it and an OM. She then flew across the board to go after my Raelin, with my Hydra chasing her from behind. Everyone was going crazy at this point. Somehow his Raelin picked up a fourth wound, and she got in a couple attacks before the Lawnmower got in range and missed from height. As we were setting up OMs, Unseen Shadowz goes, "What about Lava Field damage?" and I roll a skull killing my Hydra. The Gladiatrons managed to bring Raelin in down next turn though.

I totally agree with you here, I've enjoyed each subsequent tourney more than the last, (Even though I did worse) because I was much more comfortable, and not shaking like a leaf. I'd wanted to meet Mac122 for years, and was literally too scared to even go talk to him. I won't make that mistake again.

Of course it didn't help that my first tourney had 2 of the most nerve-wracking games I've ever played.
