Playtest of Demogorgon Stalker!

NAME OF THE PLAYTEST UNIT: (Demogorgon Stalker)

Map: Ruins at Pine Tree Marsh
Units: Demogorgon Stalker x2 VS Batman(200) Commissioner Gordon 5th Precinct Beat Cops

Commissioner Gordon heard rumors of strange creatures spotted out in the marshes near Gotham and took a squadron of his finest to investigate. The game started with Gordon and his cops beginning to comb the area that seemed barren of enemies. However a foe appeared behind cover stalking them. The officers let off a few shots but the creature was undeterred. Gordon then found himself face to face with a second Demogorgon. The Demogorgon managed to wound him and the round ended with the officers rushing back to his side. The next round began with Batman seeing the Bat signal and swooping into the high ground near Gordon who then spent his turn putting distance between himself and the Demogorgon. The Demogorgon succeeded in hitting Gordon with an attack of opportunity as he disengaged and then on its turn returned to the Upside Down. Batman flung a Batarang at the other Demogorgon and scoured a wound on it before it too returned to the Upside Down. The Cops had no target and all returned to Gordon’s side to protect his last life. Unfortunately at this point the Demogorgon appeared next to Gordon who would have been hit by its final attack of the round if not for the sacrifice of one of his officers. Round 3 started with the Demogorgon who drug Gordon into the Upside Down where he was killed. Next Batman found himself under Demogorgon attack but was able to skillfully counter resulting in no damage. On his next turn Batman was able to deal damage to one of the Demogorgon but was dragged into the Upside Down on its next turn. The Toxic Environment brought Batman up to 3 wounds but he was able to escape and rendezvous with the remaining officers. At this point the Demogorgons attacked again and one officer was killed along with a Demogorgon. Batman and the remaining Demogorgon squared off and Batman was ultimately killed. This left one officer who was killed by the Demogorgon.

This battle was interesting because while the Demogorgons could move around the map very well, the Police and Gordon had range and were usually grouped up. This made it so a missed attack could really cost the Demogorgons due to multiple counter attacks. Batman also made for an interesting combatant as he has range, and escape, and the ability to disengage and move over the Demogorgons if he is cornered in the Upside Down. I expected the Demogorgons to lose this battle, but they are absolutely terrifying. I saw that this was less of a fight and more of a horror movie as the cops were virtually useless and while Gordon could take hits he had no tools for dealing with the Upside Down. Batman could have dealt with the Demogorgons but the dice were not in his favor and two turns in the Upside Down were more than he could handle.

Units: Demogorgon Stalker x2 VS Doctor Octopus Yellow Jacket A.I.M Agents

This game started out similarly to the first one with the Agents scouting the area that seemed abandoned. The first Demogorgon Stalker was more aggressive this time and killed one of the Agents on its first turn. Yellow Jacket had a target then for his first turn and while he had height advantage he couldn’t capitalize on it and the Demogorgon went unharmed. The second Demogorgon then lept into action attacking the isolated Doctor Octopus hoping to take him out of the game early. This plan backfired and the second Demogorgon ended up locked down by Doctor Octopus who has super strength and prevents adjacent figures from moving. This left the Agents and Yellow Jacket to deal with the other Demogorgon. Yellow Jacket was taken to the Upside Down and never returned and while the AIM agents are resistant to the Upside Down they are not resistant to being shredded by claws. At this point in the game though, the Demogorgon who had taken out Yellow Jacket and the Agents had 3 wounds on him and the other one was killed by Doctor Octopus who had 3 lives remaining. The final bout between the Doctor and the Demogorgon went as expected and Doctor Octopus walked away victorious.

After the first battle I wanted to choose figures that specifically countered the Demogorgons. Doctor Octopus was a good choice as he would lock them down and he can’t be dragged to the nether. The A.I.M agents make the Upside Down useless on them and have range that can hurt the Demogorgons. Yellow Jacket has flying and I wanted to see if that would help him against the Demogorgons crazy mobility (It didn’t at all). Other than Doctor Octopus though the Demogorgons were still able to push through the odds and defeat the rest of the team.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: I think the point value is perfect and that this unit can be splashed into a wide array of armies! Balance wise the Upside Down can be a tad overwhelming. If you drag a figure into the Upside down and corner them, there is very little an opposing player can do to get out as the Demogorgons are surprisingly resilient even with their awful defense. I would consider making the Upside Down connect at the back so other players have a way out unless the player with the Demogorgons has two which would then occupy multiple resources for them to trap an opposing unit. Otherwise I thought that this unit was well done as it can be defeated in one on one combat by an equally priced unit but can absolutely rip apart weaker ones.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT: I love this unit! It really feels like a horror monster! Everytime the figures managed to get away or out match the Demogorgon I was able to back off and try another approach. This kept the opponent on guard constantly and made the map have no real safe place. At the same time though I felt like they could be defeated by high tier characters or any character who could out match them. I look forward to seeing other units from Stranger Things if they are as well done as the Demogorgon Stalker!

Thanks again Captain Redbeard! I'm glad you like the design and the theme is really shining through. It looks like they performed well and at about cost. Now I'm just curious about larger games and further interaction with the Tormentor/slasher faction.

I love this, I think it's just where they need to be!

I'm planning on running Pinhead armies, but my suspicion is it will be tough to use them effectively due to the OM requirement to pull figures into the Upside Down. But with the requirement only non-SS figures now, it does at least seem possible

I think the OM requirement was two-fold; so they wouldn't be too powerful with/dependent on Pinhead and also so folks are only encouraged to run one or two (since more would really stretch all those OMs). Also in the lore, I think it requires a lot of energy for them to portal so it makes sense that's the main thing/event happening on that turn.
But if people would wanna see it changed, I'm not entirely opposed.

Unit Summary: The Demogorgons were good shock troopers here and I enjoyed using them early. They managed to hit Black Canary hard and leave her in the Upside Down to die, which was fun. Pinhead’s bonding operating off of any revealed OM actually made them a good fit, as did their relative hardiness. Pinhead’s bonding turns just didn’t come through that efficiently while they were alive, but they were still effective in the early game. With even one piece missing though, the Justice League really struggled to put the slashers down for good.

Pinhead rolls all skulls on Michael Myers’ turn, so all three Demogorgons pop out on height against the Fan Four. They attack Invisible Woman twice, but only land one wound, then attack Human Torch once for one wound.
Michael Myers places a Stalker marker. Human Torch takes a swipe and Flames On the Demo yellow for only one wound. Human Torch smacks Demo blue for three wounds from height. Invisible Woman whiffs a ranged attack and Thing rolls poorly and can’t hit Demo blue from height disadvantage. Mister Fantastic Rubber Wraps Demos blue and pink and hits blue for a wound.
Demos aren’t close enough to take anyone to the Upside Down, so instead one drags Mister Fantastic out of the way, failing to hit him, and another engages Invisible Woman and smacks her for three wounds from height.

**I THINK this triggers the win condition, with the Demogorgon being the only figure the Slashers control, but being on the Upside Down instead of the main battlefield.** Just in case that’s not the case, I’ll play out the other way.
Demogorgon yellow teleports out and fails an attack on Thing.

Round 5: Michael Myers pops back in. Initiative Stalkers. Demogorgon fails an attack on Thing.
Michael Myers places a Stalker marker. Thing KO’s the Demogorgon.
Michael Myers KO’s Thing from height.

Unit Summary: Demogorgons were solid disruptors here even if they didn’t get their victims to the Upside Down often. The Upside Down was still a cool place for them to retreat and the Fantastic Four is pretty vulnerable to figure displacement. They did some solid damage here but it was still competitive. A big question arose here, though, as to whether the Upside Down is part of the battlefield for win conditions, so I played it out either way at the end of Round 4. In general I don’t think it should count towards win conditions, though, or you could do something gross like run them with Solomon Grundy and just keep a Demogorgon out of reach at all times while Grundy kept resurrecting again and again (i.e. guaranteed win through dick move).
I did realize after the fact that I moved Mister Fantastic illegally with Dragged Into the Nether a couple of times, so that’d affect their value here.

Sweet, thanks Bats, looks like they can do some gnarly podbreaking!

Oh yeah, it definitely shouldn't count for win conditions, especially considering they run with a resurrection army, you could camp and respawn Jason for an eternity I think.
Would the fix for that be it's no longer considered part of the battlefield? I don't think any of the powers really require it to be anymore.
Or is there a small tweak or note that would somehow fix that.

We'd need the rules/language gurus to weigh in, but it seems like we could just do something like "The Upside Down is not considered part of the battlefield for any win conditions".
