R2 – Upside-Down kills a tree. Upside-Down casts a Fireball doing a wound to Cap. Upside-Down Man attacks Cap doing a wound. Iron Man hits Upside-Down for 1 wound. THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: 705 is fine. The odd point total doesn't really matter because there are so many odd point spells and you are going to be bringing a bunch with him.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT: Upside-Down Man is a pretty neat magic user. At first I thought he would miss the Magical Defense power be once you play him you don't miss it at all with his high life. His powers are well thought out and play well with each other. His low defense can get him in trouble but loaded with a bunch of healing spells you should be able to stick around for a while. Add in Judge Anderson to his team and he can be really strong if you can keep her alive for long enough. Grabbing a handful of offensive spells like cheap Lightning Bolts gives him a ranged attack which he lacks. Overall this is a really smart design and pretty fun to play.

Early: Developed freely on the board, threw lightning bolt early on at Raven from far away. Opponent developed Raven, Nightwing and Starfire (the latter two at the base of a bridge around the tree). Played the Fool to take initiative during second round and started burning spells ASAP to unlock upsidedown cruelty. Wound up fighting Starfire on the bridge and lucked out, not taking a ton from her during her first round of hits. I kept flying over her and Nightwing to drop unblockables. Starfire eventually fell to a normal attack while UDM started healing and using some utility spells.

Mid: Used the Vapers spell to erase UDM's hitzones, this drew Raven in close who could tank pretty effectively. Cyborg tried to move into position. UDM uses Flesh to stone on cyborg, nightwing, and Raven at the beginning of a round, only hits raven which seizes an order marker. Nightwing dies to an unblockable and Raven goes down slowly during the round to normal attacks and the final ruin spell.

Late: Cyborg and MM vs UDM, Miss Martian puts some damage down and necessitates I use Mesmerize once to mitigate an attack from highground to almost nothing. Cyborg goes down to 2 unblockables + lightning bolt + Normal attack (lightning bolt whiffed). Miss Martian goes down slowly as I am able to use some recycled healing spells and a recycled hypnotize.

UDM wins with 8 life left, but was dealt 16 damage over the course of the game. Titans saw some whiffed attack rolls but the utility spells were strong here.

True Magic: Gives access to the Fool which is super powerful if he is your only unit to gain the upper hand of the turn. Wanted to use Lord of the Flies a couple of times but Miss Martian's intangibility made it useless. Recycling the unique spells (even having to draw from a shuffled deck) gives a wide range of tools to handle situations (condemn, final ruin, mesmerize, hypnotize) and Flesh to Stone was a big player. I considered casting it again because I had 5 stone markers still.

Cruelty: Did several wounds, I definitely rush to burn 5 spells immediately here and will take more lightning bolts in the future to stay at range during the first round and build up my deck.

Living Magic: Made solid use of this every turn after the first round, made me feel like I had to stay in melee once I was in melee to get the maximum use out of the spells I brought as a lot of them have 3 range.

Damage Dealt:
Early: Opponent won initiative and immediately Dropzoned Fury, Widow, and Bucky into my startzone. I neglected to use the Fool at the start of this round. Moved over and almost oneshot Fury with a Hellfire spell, whiffed the normal attack to finish him off (1 wound remaining). Black Widow and Bucky circled and got shots in. Upsidedown Cruelty couldn't get filled fast enough to do anything immediately.

Mid: Tried moving away to kite, Bucky and Natasha moved to chase leaving OM 3 on Fury. UDM moved to height and killed Bucky with a spell and a normal attack (I got greedy and didn't heal here).

Late: Widow has a quick exchange, I use the fool but miss initiative and UDM goes down to Widow's autoskull ability in melee combat.



True Magic: Really missed having Flesh to Stone here! And definitely should have cast the Fool before the first turn when I got surrounded. The versatility of having access to lots of spells gives a great toolbox that lets you try to respond in different ways.

Cruelty: Couldn't get it full fast enough to make a huge difference because the Agents came in hot from round 1 turn 1. It's a good balancing factor, means that if you rush him he is easier to take which justifies his lategame and spell recycling powers.

Living Magic: The big normal attack is sometimes a trap, will definitely feed the greed for the UDM to move in and finish a unit fast.

Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Agents: Fury with 1 life remaning, Black Widow with 2 life remaning, Iron Man untouched.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY: 705 seems good. UDM will only get better as more spells come out which will probably happen given my enthusiasm with the magical defense faction. He can really take a unique spell and use it to its full potential. I think having a variety of spells is best, waking nightmare is a horrible spell though and should not be taken with UDM. This was an exercise in seeing what was useful and what wasn't. Flesh to Stone, really good here because if he doesn't use all the stone markers he has a chance of recycling the spell and trying for some greedy plays while in melee combat.

I like how he plays. He can be played in a very reactive way or you can try to put together a plan and pick apart what the enemy team is. People that are intangible will give him some troubles and he has no natural defenses against d20 power. His low defense makes him a punching bag in some respects but he can overcome. Had a lot of fun on my end.

My opponents thoughts:

Upside-Down Man is a fun and unique design that will add yet more spice to C3G's cadre of Event Villains. I can say that playing against this monstrosity is very motivating as you want to utterly stop the thing from existing. Teen Titans couldn't quite get enough wounds in before UDM started healing and taking them out one by one, but a special assignment of Agents were able to effectively Drop In and meet the task at hand. Ideally, you want to hit fast and hard, leaving no chance for healing spells and vary up your hubs in preparation for OM removal spells.
