I haven't worked on this in a while. I really like how the mechanics work, and the games I played with it were fun, but my sons prefer video games now over Heroscape stuff.
I used to do this stuff with Lego weapons and stuff when I was younger. It seems really thought out, I'm gunna use it this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

How old is your son? If you don't mind that I ask. I myself am only 19 and a sophomore in college and I used to play quite a few video games. I eventually realized that heroscape is better than any video game and maybe someday he'll find his way back to Heroscape.

edit: I do have one question about the gameplay also, what maps do you play on and what figures are the best to face? Also, max number of skills is three right?

My boys are almost 14 and 16. When I tried out the role playing game on them, they were still a little young (maybe 11 and 13), so they were probably too young to really understand roleplaying.

For the maps, I make them up quickly. In post 24 of this thread I detailed my first adventure module (LS-1). In the spoilers, it tells how I set up the maps. The first three were forest terrain, so I made maps with mostly grass and a road and some hills and trees. For the final encounter, I made a small castle at the edge of a swamp.

From the rules:
4) All level 1 figures receive 1 skill point. They may use their 1 skill point to select a skill or to select 3 daily magic spell points (1 skill point can buy 3 daily magic spell points)

Each time they go up a level they gain an additional skill point. So a level 5 character would have 5 skill points. (See the Base Stats table).
Magic using characters can use 1 skill point to buy a skill or to buy 3 additional spell points. All characters can use their new skill point to buy a level 1 skill, or they can store up skill points to buy level 2 or 3 skills. Once you use your skill points, they are gone (but you gain the skill or the spell points).

I found that my boys preferred facing one or two large figures rather than a pack of weak figures. Since each figure moves and attacks each turn, when I had 4 squads of Marrden Nagrubs, 2 squads of Drudge, and a leader to move and attack each turn (19 figures) it took a while to resolve. They much preferred battling the two trolls.

An RPG should really tell a story to be most exciting. The battles are fun because they take place within the overall story. After the battle is over, maybe the characters find some money or gems, or maybe they find a magic sword or a few pages from a spellbook with new spells in it.

My first module, LS-1, shows how I wove the battles into the story.

I have another module I made for my younger son. I'll try to find it and post it to give you an idea of how to use the story to build suspense for the battles.

Re: Legends of Scape (RPG)

Normally when I play a RPG game with heroscape, I recommend to all my friends to get different classes such as a multi-attacker or crowd control, along with cheerleaders, tanks, and DPS units to maximize for situational outcomes.

Yeah, anytime I draft an RPG of any sort the very first thing I do is come up with the story. There's a reason a lot of the highly-credited stories out there (on video games for example) are RPGs.

Re: Legends of Scape (RPG)

Module HO-1: HAUNTED OAKS

For 4-8 Characters, Level 1

Introduction
This is a Legends of Scape adventure module for 4 to 8 Level 1 characters. It is an introductory module for players just learning to play Legends of Scape.

I ran this module last Saturday night for my two sons (who have played Heroscape before) and for my wife and daughter and my son's girlfriend (who have never played Scape before). We did the whole thing in one night--it was completely awesome!

I'm going to share the module encounter by encounter along with notes on the battles. What a great night!

Background for the Players (Common Knowledge)
The player’s figures live in the small town of Maybin Downs in the southeastern edge of the Fiefdom of Bucknell. Maybin Downs is a small trading and farming town. It is bordered on the west by the Haunted Oaks. Very few people venture into the haunted forest--those who enter either are killed by various creatures or never return. In fact, it is forbidden by law for the guards of Maybin Down to enter the forest or even to cross Ash Creek which borders the forest.

My Wife

My Son's Girlfriend

Starting the Scenario
You (the players) are summoned to the mansion of the Lord of Maybin Downs on an urgent request. As you approach the Lord's house, at the foot of the front stairs you see two women who are crying hysterically and several other women who are with them trying to comfort them. The guards escort you up the stairs and into the welcome foyer of the mansion.

The Lord of Maybin Downs is waiting for you, surrounded by several of his guardsmen. Off to the side you see a man being held by the guards--a traveling merchant you recognize as Waldor the Magnificent. Except he doesn't look magnificent today; he looks downright dejected.

Lord of Maybin Downs
Thank you all for coming today. I apologize for taking you from your daily activities, but we need your help. As far as I can ascertain, our merchant friend here was in the market selling his gifts and trinkets from his merchant wagon when four young children approached and began to look at his items for sale. One of them, a young girl named Trina, suddenly screamed, dropped the box she was holding, and began to run--through the crowd and straight towards the outskirts of town. The other three children ran after her. When they reached the edge of town and realized Trina was crossing Ash Creek towards the Haunted Oaks, Chem, who is 8 years old, and their friend Brigga, who is 10 years old, sent the youngest girl, Elena, back to tell their parents what had happened. Then Chem and Brigga continued after Trina across the creek.

You know that our guards are not allowed to cross into the Haunted Oaks. I have heard that some of you have skill in tracking, and others have skills with weapons. I am asking you, as your Lord, if you will enter the forest and find the three children--hopefully alive.

Beginning the Adventure
Once the players accept the Lord's request, move on to Encounter 1.

Re: Legends of Scape (RPG)

Module HO-1: HAUNTED OAKS

For 4-8 Characters, Level 1

Encounter 1
The trail of the three children leads you down a dirt farm road towards the towering trees of the Haunted Oaks in the distance. There are only a few farms here--most people don't feel comfortable living this close to the eerie forest.

On the right side of the road is a graveyard with dozens of marked tombstones and several mausoleums. As you pass by, you notice that several of the graves have mounds of fresh dirt--as if a huge dog had been digging at the sites. You also notice that the stone doors on two of the mausoleums are lying in shattered pieces on the ground.

The trail continues past the last farm on the road before the forest--a homestead owned by Nicholai and Jenra Butterfield.

(pass a note to one of the players--preferably a White Mage or a Ranger: "Something feels very wrong here.")

You notice the front door to the farmhouse is open, but no one is in sight.

As you approach, first one, then another gray shape appears in the doorway. Both are covered in blood. They start toward your group.

Encounter 1
2 Ghouls
Roll initiative. The ghouls will rush to attack.

After the battle
The trail continues down the dirt road. If anyone decides to check the farmhouse, roll a single attack die. On a skull, that character runs out and vomits. Both Nicholai and Jenra are dead inside.
