Figure size

Is there a hard and fast rule about sizing figures?

Like:
1-3 = Small
4-5 = Medium
6-8 = Large

I see there are some figures that are Large but only 4 or 5 and their are Medium figures that are 6. Being that Large characters can have an advantage I was wondering how you determine if you classify the size.

It also has to do with their base size. Double based figures are always large or huge.

While this is true...

The # is the figure's HEIGHT and therefore doesn't really have much to do with the SIZE. Yes, there is a general correlation, but... For example, you could have a really big but skinny worm that could be SMALL 17, while standing up. Or you could have a huge fat blob that's low to the ground and say, HUGE 3. Does that make sense?

Yes, it does make sense, but what do you use as a parameter to classify the size? Is it just best guess?

Pretty much. I would compare the bulkiness. Imagine how much space it would take up if all of the plastic of the figure was melted and mushed into a ball. If it takes up roughly the same space as a human/elf/kyrie/etc., it's Medium. If it's significantly more bulky, it should be Large. If it's less bulky, it could be Small.
