OK ... I think what's still messing me up about this is that a "space" doesn't really have a "height" does it? Figures have heights. But do spaces?

How about:
Adjacent to Spaces - The figure is adjacent to a space if the difference in height between the two spaces is less than the height of the figure and if the spaces were equal in level, they would be linked.
