Caravaggio, your maps are gorgeous! I've been studying your photos and look forward to implementing some of your techniques in my own maps. Here's my first crack at a bridge model inspired by your stuff. THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION!

Gimoo, can you share the plans for that?

And thanks Caravaggio. I can't wait to try adapting this for my own purposes.

Ditto. I'm dying to find out how you make that bridge without it falling.

i uploaded the instructions last week. they are on page 3 of this thread.
i still have not heard back from anyone actually trying to build the bridge per the instructions and reporting on its sturdiness. perhaps this weekend i will have to try rebuilding it and to make sure the instructions work.

that's okay. i'm stupid too. i just realised that the bridge i gave instructions for is a little less supported than the one in the first post of this thread. if the instructions dont work, as soon as i can get my hands back on my peices i'll figure it out again for sure.

...and then you all can expect some new landscapes (hopefully featuring some snow and ice).

GIMOO,

what i really like most about the rendering you posted (other than the flattery) is the subtle curves you made the rolling hills out of. some of my earliest pre-tree, 3 master set maps tried to have nice green rolling hillsides like that. in a real photo i dont think it would show up as nicely, but the rendering does it justice. did you build this map in the real world? show us some photos.

Nor would any non-flying 2-space figure, right?

What looks prettiest isn't always the best, solely due to that stupid Heroscape rule.

Haha, funny you mention those subtle curves, as that is what I will now be trying to avoid after seeing your maps. As I don't have the natural ability to make maps like yours, I had to figure out what I think makes your tick:

1. Wide, ornate bridges...

2. Spanning large gaps of water...

3. Between tall stacks (10 to 16 hex) of terrain...

4. Made up of smaller double and triple "copy" stacks of terrain...

5. In organic shapes.

After seeing your maps last night, I created a kind of cove thing with a tiny bit more contrast than the typical hill. The result was this twisted thing.

I'm eager to see the change when I implement some more serious Caravaggio styling!

Thanks again,

G

Yeah, I have no idea if mine works...I'm sure plenty of binder clips are in order.

here are some maps...old maps... built with two mastersets. they remind me quite a bit of the shoreline rendering you just posted. except it looks like you used about 4 or 5 MS?

from the beginning i have been pretty infatuated with building hillsides sloping into the water with islands of shore.

here's another built shortly after (still only 2 MS) but it kinda has some cool caves and shows how we used to build bridges.

i think this was probably from march '05. we were toying with the idea of making our own custom figures and bought a bunch of heroclicks or whatever but finally decided not to use them. i did start sculpting my own figures from the green putty but decided it was far too time consuming. maybe someday i will pick up where i left off.

the back...

I was looking at the resources we'll have to build maps at KublaCon, and I was wondering how we could build a bridge from this design with just 2 RttFF sets......?

It seems like we might be able to build 2/3rds of the bridge, not using one of the support structures, and instead ending it right on where it meets the next land mass.

Would this work?
How many modifications would it take to the design?
Would it be easy for you to mock-up a 2-set bridge in pdf so we could try building it?

how many master sets do you have at your disposal? i would imagine that within a week i could create something (i'm a bit busy with work right now but hope to have some time later this week and hope to get my peices back this weekend). anyway, it could be fun. let me know.
