Stardust
I just got back from watching it. I thought it was a pretty good Fairy Tale. Anyone else see it yet?

My opinion is slightly stronger....
In a summer filled with a glut of sequels, over-hyped and poorly acted blockbusters and precious few diamonds in the rough, this movie stands out above them ALL. Yes, even Transformers. Hey, call me sentimental but I love a good faerie tale. We all know what a brilliant writer Neil Gaiman is and this movie is true to the spirit, if not the letter, of the book. The changes made to the original tale are warranted and even add to quality of the movie. The acting is brilliant (especially De Niro (duh) and Pfiefer). On the whole, this is the first 10/10 movie of the year. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() || My Maps Review Blog || My Maps Thread || My Marvel Customs || Knights of the Daystorm || [/CENTER] |

Unfortunately, Paramount never really promoted it. I guess they spent their budget on Transformers.
Stardust only took in a little over $3M on Friday. The sad thing is Rush Hour 3 took in $17M. I watched it this afternoon and loved it. It was a tad twisted, which is to be expected in anything that Neil Gaiman touches. ![]() |

Velenne I couldn't agree more, I said it previously and I'll say it again comic book movie event of the year. I'm huge Miller 300 fan to boot. I was not disappointed in the least. One thing the movie did not try to recreate, which would have very difficult, is the whimsical nature of Charles Vess' art from the book.

Now now, let's not dis Transformers. that movie rocks. That said though, Stardust blew me away. I can't give a review without spoiling it, but I endorse this movie!

I agree, I thought the movie was great. It was a good balance of fantasy and humor, kept me entertained till the very end.

Stardust is quite simply the best summer movie this year. Superb acting, story, effects, humor, you want it? This movie has it. Considering much of the over-hyped rubbish on screens this summer, this movie is a real gem. But, as usual, the studios just do not support good movies. It's sort of a vicious circle, great movie is not promoted and does poorly so other similar gems go un-produced, while movies trash gets millions in publicity and hence does great and so we get more and more carp in theaters. Really, out of the movies I saw in theaters this year, Pirates, Spider-Man, 300, Simpsons, Transformers and Harry Potter, Stardust simply leaves them in, well, its dust.
Compared directly to the fantasy behemot of the year (Potter), Stardust far outclasses it in complexity and depth. Sigh, here's hoping the future is not completely full of 2 hour smutty movie trailers like Transformers, melodramatic superheroes like Spidey, Hollow "Star" studded blockbusters like Pirates or juvenile glorified TV series like Potter. |

I've been thinking of seeing this. I have heard though, that some of the effects are distractingly cheesy and some of the performances are quite phoned-in....any truth to either of those statements?
Bad acting annoys the bejeezus out of me as there is no excuse for it....couple it with bad effects and I'm not going to enjoy the movie. |
