Ugh. Hex vs square grid.

Hex = no diagonal movement inconsistency and easier AOE attacks. Partial spaces left with room and buildings though.

Grid = simplicity for rooms, buildings. Not so organic for outdoor scenery though. Diagonal movement and AOE kinda sucks.

Which is better outside of Heroscape and why? Thinking about getting back into terrain and deciding what to work with.

Everything is better on a hex grid.

Re: Ugh. Hex vs square grid.

From a martial artist stand point Hex makes more sense. If 3 people are attacking a person head on they will stand in a semi cirle not a line. Attacks are either front, slightly left or slightly right. Rarely are you attacking directly right or left.

It makes more sense.

Re: Ugh. Hex vs square grid.

Fair enough but I don't much care about how it translates to real life. I care about customizing terrain and what is more appealing. Dungeons are far easier on grid but outdoor simply should be hexes and I won't switch between them.

Re: Ugh. Hex vs square grid.

Hexes are much nicer. You can make buildings on them, just base the buildings or have them fit in between the hexes, like the ruins do in HeroScape.

It is really about personal preference, and I hate the idea of a grid system, it seems so boring and overused.

Re: Ugh. Hex vs square grid.

For making terrain like paper craft and such the square is the best.

For look of the completed product and terrain flexibility Hex all the way.

For game play I don't think it makes much difference especially if you offset the squares then they work almost like hexes.

Re: Ugh. Hex vs square grid.

Hit up the games store today. They have quite a lot of HS stuff in stock still and prices are not inflated. Reminded me how much larger the HS hexes are to usual, but damn normal mini size seems too small.

I may even just settle for making props and so on without tiles. Could always sell them at cost to, not profit but would keep me busy at least.

SOTM was about $40, a LOT of swamp in there. I suppose it doesn't matter if it's all getting painted though.
