Sorin Markov (the planeswalker), created Avacyn, in order to ensure the survival of his people's food supply. Hardly a popular choice, but whatever. Also, she's trapped in the Hellvault, which is a prison where she was storing Demons when she got trapped in there herself. The issue with letting her out is that if the "door" is opened, then she gets out, but so do the demons.

Just thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to incorporate some of that in one of your numerous fan fics about inistrad.

Is that the official MTG story line?

Yep no problem. Incidentally, I was at an Dark Ascension pre-release last weekend, and I pulled five mythics in all, Helvault being one of them.

EDIT-In other news, I still can't manage to decide who's winning.

After quite a lot of editing for a submission, here's my entry. Enjoy! Sorry if it's a bit long.

Spoiler Alert!

Black wings rose in the darkness, accompanied by red arms, raised high to the ceiling of the large chamber. Guttural words, spoken in an ancient tongue, flowed throughout the air, and diffused it with the essence of magic. A consciousness appeared in the swirling pool of red. A being swirled into view, coming ever closer.
Walls of water enclosed it. Worlds flashed by, gone in an instant. A glimpse of a red face, a horrible visage, a triumphant expression, and then the being was sucked back, and sent spiraling downwards…
Miles away, the ancient words echoed off of the walls of ice, and the magic flowed there as well. Another being, this one clad in shining armor, also observed the walls of water about it, and the glimpses of worlds passing by. White wings, tipped with glossy feathers, and a resolute figure met its eyes, before the waters assumed a black tint, and it was sucked backwards, down, down into places unknown…
“Behind you!” A greatsword flashed in the moonlight, its path curving across a dark form in the air, and returning stained red. The werewolf slumped to the ground, dead.
“There’s too many of them!” growled the owner of the greatsword, a huge man with bulging muscles and a long beard.
“The village is just at the foot of the mountain,” the other man yelled back, as he sliced off the head of a giant werewolf before him. “It isn’t much farther; we can make it!”
The large man looked about, and yelled, “Kauthas! To your right!”
The man named Kauthas spun around, and at the same moment, the huge beast leapt, its jaws wide open. Kauthas brought his sword around, but it was too late: the werewolf was already descending towards him.
A flash of bright light, a wave of heat, and the two men staggered back. Two figures stood between Kauthas and the werewolf in mid air, one looking completely out of place, and the other fitting in perfectly.
Then the werewolf landed. One of the two men, the one with the dark cloak, went down as it landed on top of him, and the other, the one in armor, looked around bewilderedly. Kauthas and the large man sprung forward, but they were not fast enough. The armored man withdrew his sword and stabbed the werewolf. Its body tensed, and then sprawled lifeless on the ground.
The sudden appearance of the two men had driven off the other werewolves, and Kauthas now stooped down, his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath. “We made it, Reythal,” he gasped, speaking to the large man. Reythal, however, knew this was no time to relax.
He rushed to the side of the strange man in the dark cloak, and knelt down, studying his face. The armored man above him, who was obviously a knight, looked at him with confusion written all over his face.
As Reythal peered into the strange man’s face, he could see that he had been bitten. He stood up, and brought his greatsword up over his head, preparing to strike, but before he could swing the blade downwards, a great blast of heat threw him off of his feet.
A jet of flame hit him hard in the chest, and Reythal went flying backwards. Maintaining his presence of mind, he managed to keep a hold on his greatsword as he fell on the hard rocks. He hit his head, and was momentarily dazed.
The man in the cloak who had been bitten sprung up, snarling fiercely, and Kauthas backed away, his sword at the ready. The knight backed away too, still confused as to what was going on.
The strange man sunk to all fours, and glared at the three of them with glowing green eyes. He snarled at Kauthas, and his arms suddenly began to lengthen and grow thicker. Corded muscles emerged on them, and hair came into view as the seams burst apart. His head lengthened, his nose grew smaller and shorter, and his ears went out past his head. His whole body grew larger, stretching his clothes and causing his cloak to fall to the ground. Where once had been a man, now the largest wolf any man had ever seen stood.
The werewolf stood there, as if uncertain what to do, and Reythal, recovering from his daze, got up, keeping his greatsword at the ready.
The werewolf sprang at him as he moved, and he brought his sword up with lightening fast reflexes, catching the beast on the shoulder and flinging it to the ground with his sword.
The wolf landed hard, but rolled over, revealing a great gash in its side where Reythal’s sword had struck it. Reythal raised his sword again, intending to finish the beast, but once again a jet of flame shot out from the werewolf, and he was thrown backwards.
Kauthas simply stood staring at the wolf. This was no ordinary werewolf, who could blast fire at its opponents at will. He backed away still further. The way to the village was clear, but he hesitated to leave his friend.
The werewolf had landed fairly close to the knight, and he jumped as the creature came rolling towards him. Unfortunately, in all of his armor, he lost his balance, and fell, clattering, to the ground.
Snarling at the noise, the werewolf turned, and leapt at the knight. Reythal got up just as the werewolf landed, and rushed over, his greatsword flashing in the moonlight. The man’s armor seemed to have protected him from the werewolf, because when Reythal tore the beast off of him, he was not seriously hurt.
Reythal hauled the beast up by the scruff of the neck, and sent it flying with a punch to its belly. As he punched it, a jet of flame erupted from its mouth, and both of them flew backwards, to land on the rocks beyond.
Kauthas, seeing neither his friend nor the werewolf, after a pause, cautiously made his way to the knight.
“Where am I?” spluttered the knight, struggling to get off of the ground in his cumbersome armor.
“You are on the Mountain of Death,” replied Kauthas, watching the knight’s endeavors to rise.
The knight fell back. “And where, pray tell, is this Mountain of Death?”
Kauthas raised an eyebrow. “In the land of Ferthard, or at least, what was Ferthard.” At the knight’s blank look, Kauthas proceeded, with a note of irony in his voice, “on the world of Innistrad. Surely you know where you are now?”
“Innistrad?” said the knight blankly. “Never heard of it.”
Kauthas did into have a chance to comment on this, for at that moment, both the werewolf and Reythal came charging towards him from opposite sides. He pushed the knight out of the way just as the two collided.
Reythal brought his sword up and caught the werewolf with a vicious blow in the belly, but the werewolf, equally prepared, fell back and shot flame at Reythal. Reythal turned his head to avoid the flame, but instead it ignited his thick cloak. Then the werewolf sprang again. Reythal, somewhat blinded by the sudden brightness of the flame, swung his sword up rather clumsily, and the werewolf managed to easily evade it. Then they both toppled to the ground, with the werewolf on top.
Kauthas charged into the fray, swinging his sword at the werewolf. However, the two combatants suddenly rolled over, and his sword, already on its way, got Reythal square in his side. The force of the blow flung him from the werewolf, and he collapsed several feet away. Horrified at what he had done, Kauthas simply watched as the werewolf flipped onto its feet, and eyed him hungrily. Then, just as it sprung at him, he flung his sword straight at its neck, and felt it pass straight through. The werewolf’s head, however, remained on its shoulders.
Kauthas, now thoroughly bewildered, dropped his sword in amazement and fear, and stumbled back on the knight. Running into him, he promptly tripped and they both fell over. The werewolf crept up to where they lay, trying desperately to disentangle themselves. It eyed them, and then, raising one massive paw, prepared to strike Kauthas to the ground.
But then, just as its clawed foot was descending, a greatsword, glinting red in the moonlight, came down out of nowhere, caught the beast in its side, and flung it, expertly aimed, over the side of the mountain and to the valley below. Reythal knelt down and looked at Kauthas.
“You all right?” he asked him.
“Yes,” said Kauthas, struggling upwards.
“And you?” said Reythal, gesturing to the knight. A muffled reply was all that he got from beneath the helmet, but from it he judged him to be uninjured.
“That was like no werewolf I’ve ever seen,” said Kauthas.
“Good thing it won’t be coming back for a long while,” agreed Reythal.
Their conversation was broken short by the knight, who had just struggled to his feet. “Where in all the flat earth am I?” he said, raising his visor. “And what is Innistrad?”
Reythal and Kauthas exchanged glances. “Where do you come from?” said Reythal.
The knight drew himself up proudly and said, “I am the captain of the scouts of the castle Ponte du Vour in France. Now what is this Innistrad?”
“It’s where you are right now,” said Kauthas. “There is no France or castle Ponte du Vour here. Just werewolves, vampires, and ghosts.”
There was a pause, and then the knight’s face assumed a glowing look, as if he was a young child being given a new toy. “Werewolves, vampires, and ghosts, did you say?” There was another pause, and then he shouted to the night air, “Show me the beasts! Bring me to their cowardly faces! I’ll crush them all! As my name is Francois, the blue knight of Ponte du Vour, I will!”

P.S. Strictly speaking, that never happened to Francois, but who knows, maybe Jandar summoned him from Innistrad.
