Diplomacy

I've been having a lot of fun with this classic game recently. At the start of this school year my local gaming club bought the newest version of it. Our Adviser used to play it a lot, and he played a game with us, teaching us the rules, and of course totally dominating us. Such glorious destruction has not been seen in some time...

Anyhow I've become addicted to the game recently, as has the Nerd Herd (a.k.a. my group of gaming buddies). I'm just wondering if there are other scapers out there that play this game, and what they think of it.

Also if you do play, does anyone out there play online? I play through facebook, it has a pretty good Diplomacy App that we've been playing a lot of games through. Orders only take a few minutes a night so we have several games up at once.

Ranior is DJ Khosumet the current and hopefully future Dark Lord...

Re: Diplomacy

My playing days predate online play, so I can't comment on that part of your post, but Diplomacy stands as one of my all-time favorites. Oddly for a Heroscape player, one of the draws of Diplomacy for me is that there is no randomness (unless you count your "friends'" word...). The mechanics are really simple and the gameplay keeps drawing me back--the players involved change the strategy from game to game, giving it a lot of replayability.

Re: Diplomacy

This is one of my favorite games of all time. I've been playing it since 1978. I've played it quite a bit both face-to-face and on-line. I haven't tried it at facebook.

I also enjoy Colonial Diplomacy, which is an official variant released by Avalon Hill in the 90's (I think). I haven't played this version nearly as much, but it is great fun too.

Re: Diplomacy

Have a blast, Oni!

Really the only downside is the fact that I've always felt you need seven players to really get into it (to the OP: I guess that's where the online component would really come in handy). Meeting with another country while keeping an eye on who else is meeting with who else (and what might they be discussing?) is really the highlight of the game.

No, wait: the highlight is when those orders are finally revealed and you see who you can trust (at least for now).

Faking alliances, pretending to break an alliance only to backstab someone else...what's not to love in this game?
