Re: Letters From the Front

I have been running a Legend game for my siblings, but the plot moves like molasses due to all of us being amateurs (and a practical time limit of an hour per session).
The starting party consisted of a human shaman, a dwarf rogue, a demon monk, and an undead hodgepodge of multiclassing. They all ended up in a tiny village that was soon raided by a band of orc mercenaries, who had been hired by a mysterious armored titan to retrieve a seemingly ordinary old statuette. Our heroes cut down some orcs, interrogating an orc ranger who ended up defecting to their team (as a GMPC who is carefully kept exactly one level behind everyone else).
Finally, they managed to defeat the mercenaries' employer, noting that his smouldering bones bore traces of artificial modification. He had also been carrying a shield with an unfamiliar heraldic crest, and a scrap of parchment inscribed with an incomplete but tantalizing message. Hints of something bigger behind the scenes, no doubt!

Excellent! I don't know anything about the system, but I look forward to updates. One hour sessions should be fine if you can get them in regularly. My brother has tried to give us a couple NPC helpers in our current campaign but they keep getting killed. Maybe they are more than one level behind us?

After a week off for Halloween, we came back last night to a quiet day in Port Shy. We found that the NPC who had tasked us with finding the captured adventurers had, along with all the others in his faction, been driven from town. We had no great attachment to him, though, so we spent the day selling some odds and ends from our adventure, and the ranger went to the nearby woods to collect another piggy to replace the one that died.

Before we went to the book merchant I inspected one of the arcane texts we had collected, and it turned out that it was trapped. Some kind of rune exploded. I bluffed our way out of any accountability for ensuing injuries and property damage ("I am going to demand justice from the merchant who just sold us this book!" And angrily stormed off.).

We picked up a couple leads on adventures to pursue next, including a lead on the mysterious disappearance of our halfling monk's family.

So, in order, we are going into the wilderness (1) to sell or trade a relic (a book) to a clan of druids, (2) to resolve a mystery about what's happening to the beer in a dwarven village, and (3) going to the inland city to pick up the trail on the halfling's family. That's not the order of importance; it's just the order in which we will encounter these things as we journey inland.

When we left our bright-eyed adventurers, they were at the bottom of a ravine in the wilderness, peering up at a giant holding a boulder up above his head.

Save the beer!

Sounds fun DS. Duck!

Dark Stranger: Is the party evil. Rare to have a demon (a monk no less) and undead in a party. Love the destroyed message angle.

One of my first Gen Cons (Milwaukee days) I was in a game where we played ourselves and were teleported to D&D, sorta like the cartoon. There was chest that had clothes (as we were naked) a scroll and broken bottles (once healing potions).
The GM then handed us an actual scroll that explained what happened except the bottom was unreadable due to the healing potions blurring out the ink. Awesome prop.

Re: Letters From the Front

@Dad_Scaper it probably helps that Legend tends to build NPCs just like PCs. It's pretty hard doing anything on a consistent schedule at our house, but I'm working to keep people interested.

@Tornado actually, we managed to fit that many monsters into a good (ish) party! The demon's backstory involves him finding a magical artifact that gave him a conscience (which he doesn't always do a good job of following--he is still a demon, after all). The skeleton is just arrogant and self-important...probably because he was a king when he was alive.
And I'll admit, I made a prop for the ruined parchment...basically just tore it up and laid on some watercolor to make it look old/dirty.

Re: Letters From the Front

I see my last post was 11/8/17, or roughly two months ago. Time for an update!

Our trek through the wilderness was interrupted by an encounter with some kind of small giant, who turned out to be a bit of a softy. He wanted us, it turns out, to clear a few phase spiders out of his hut, because they scared him. The encounter probably should have been pretty easy but for some reason it nearly killed me.

Anyway. With some help from an appreciative giant, we had a good night's rest, and made our way to a dwarven village nearby, where we'd been hired to solve some sort of problem. After some investigation, it turned out the problem was a "yeast ooze" living in the tunnels underground, and messing with the yeast that the dwarves needed to brew ale. The most memorable thing about the battle with the massive ooze was that, during it, our bard turned around and ran away and we were immediately joined by a gnome barbarian who took his place.

My brother, the DM, had finally persuaded the player to drop the fussy bard that he clearly didn't care to play, in favor of a more streamlined character who could rush to the front and slash things up with a giant axe. So that was a good day, partly for the player, and partly for party composition. After all, we'd been in desperate need of a beatstick, and a reluctant bard was a second "face" character we didn't need on top of mine.

Anyway. With the sudden and mighty help of our new barbarian party member, we dispatched the ooze. We picked up our reward and some directions toward Hong Zhou, a river town where our halfling monk Finn hoped to pick up some clues about what happened to his clan and to his family. Hong Zhou turned out be just the kind of place my half elf charlatan sorcerer, Del, loves: a rough and tumble town for gamblers.

So we've been getting to know the town and Del intends to try to ingratiate himself with "the Clasp," the network of thieves' guilds, as an ally, though he is not himself a rogue. When we start the game tonight we will be competing in some sort of dueling competition to entertain the locals and give them something to bet on. Each of us is squared off against some particular bad guy; my opponent is some sort of devil creature.

Hopefully I'll do well enough to impress the lass who runs the local chapter of the Clasp. And, yes, my brother is borrowing heavily from Matt Mercer's material for the campaign setting.

Re: Letters From the Front

Nothing strikes fear in your enemy like a gnome.

Thanks for the update DS. May be awhile before I get the chance to play again.
Thinking about doing some gladiator style battle to do some playtesting of new ideas in the near future though.

I think the Bard was off to 'save' the rest of beer.
Our GM probably would have had the Bard get consumed by the ooze or fall in a pit.

The poor player is the newest to the idea of an RPG. He loves music and really wanted to be a bard because of that connection, but he tends to be very quiet in non-combat situations and therefore abdicated the role of face, to the extent he ever wanted it, to me. Which was fine because Del is built for it and I love to do it, but then in combat the player didn't have a great grasp of all the things he could do in a support role, so mostly he ran up to the front to stab things with his rapier, and do very little damage. And then things would hit him, and he would take a beating.

This was much better. My brother had been working him over for a long time to get him to switch, and finally it happened. Good news all around, as I said. He can make a huge difference by running to the front and cutting things up, and he can sit back while I talk to the local head of the Clasp. Win/win.

Sounds good for all.

I think you all made the right call letting them find out for themselves that bard was not the right class for them, at least right now.

Re: Letters From the Front

I plan on running a coop campaign of frostgrave/Ghost archipelago here soon. I'm putting together the scenarios in which we will play and also custom monsters and objectives for the game. I'll be using the preface of the spellcaster issue 2 rules for dragons and such as well. Should be a blast. One day I may buy into DnD. I have all the figures and terrain for it. Just need the manuals.

Thanks for the read on all your delving adventures guys.

Well, if you guys are interested, I'll keep writing. It's probably good to have a journal of some kind, anyway.

The arena combat was another clever design from my brother. We four party members were split into four different rooms, each with a different randomly selected opponent. At the top of each round, we magically rotated to the next room, to face the opponent there.

I figured as a sorcerer, a sort of a glass cannon, my best hope was to end my fight quickly. Luckily, I went first. So I blasted the bearded devil with a fireball, using various class resources to lower his resistance to it and then to blast him with a second one on my same turn. I'd used a lot of sorcerer juice to get that big head start, which I figured I'd need, when - to my surprise - after the full round of combat, my brother kicked in the room-rotation effect. So I moved to the next room, where I had to fight the swarm of poisonous snakes that the monk had been fighting previously.

Those who have been following Del's story closely will remember the night when his wild magic accidentally triggered a fireball, centered on himself, that nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Well, guess what, fans. It happened again! Very unlikely outcome, but now it's happened twice. I was trying to cast a spell; I forget which one it was, and BOOM. Del took a bow as if he'd done it on purpose,* and he took many snakes down, but he'd hurt himself pretty badly in the blast.

Over the following few rounds we managed to take out the devil, the snakes, a manticore, and a man-at-arms. We then got some valuable information, in exchange for our trouble, and Finn (the halfling monk looking for news of his family) was reunited with his cousin, who had information about where we might pick up the trail.

The rest of the party left the casino and went back to the inn, but Del stayed behind and, without telling anyone in the party, went upstairs to talk to the lady who runs the casino for the Clasp.

A couple days after the session, my brother and I played that out one-on-one. Del offered his services as a partner to the rogues' guild, as a guy who could travel and circulate outside their command structure, and complete tasks from time to time that were not suitable for actual Clasp operatives.

She politely but firmly threw him out of her office, but upon returning to the inn, there was a man waiting in his room who expressed interest in his offer. "Don't call us, we'll call you," is pretty much how they left it. We shall see. I feel pretty good about this being something Del, a wandering chaotic good gambling sorcerer, would want to do.

Edit: * ~ I am playing Del as the iconic Texas sharpshooter, in the "Texas sharpshooter fallacy." The name refers to the sharpshooter who shoots a hole in the side of a barn, and then paints a bullseye around it. That's me!

I like the gladiator set up.

Good stuff.

Always fun when you can do some one on one role play on the side.
