Starting an RPG group
Hey everyone, I am trying to start up a pen and paper RP group, and have a few questions to ask.
Are there any d20 supernatural systems available? If not what are the best supernatural RP available? |

Re: Starting an RPG group
Depends on what you mean by "supernatural". D20 doesn't have much beyond D&D that is very fleshed out. There is always Call of Chthulu but that is not much of a long term game system because dying or going insane (or both) are practically a given. Perhaps GURPs would suffice with all it's variations.

Re: Starting an RPG group
White Wolf has the market cornered on Vampires and Werewolves. They've got a pretty solid system.
I'd also look into anything in the Palladium Universe (Rifts). That's a good core system that is versatile enough to accommodate just about anything you want to do with it. Are you going the story-teller, or do you want to play? |

Re: Starting an RPG group
I'd go GURPS then, they have so many options that you can add to the basic version of the game including the converted White Wolf World of Darkness books. My bet is though that all you'd need to start is the GURPS Basic Game, GURPS Horror and GURPS Mystery. Then you can peruse any other books you might want to purchase such as the Creatures of the Night supplement books, Monsters or Undead. All of which would provide a lot of great gaming.

Re: Starting an RPG group
Personally I'd stick with Call of Cthulhu and remove all of the Mythos stuff. Or do this: Choasium has just put out their rules in such a way that you can use them for any genre. It's called Basic Role Playing and I would highly recommend it. They have an extremely well play tested RPG system that's very easy for both new game masters and players alike, where the story matters over the rules. And that's what you really need to pull off successful horror game. The question of character longevity or sanity is moot with the addition of the newer rules as well.

Re: Starting an RPG group
If you want a D20 supernatural game, there is Monte Cook's World of Darkness. It is the game that my group is currently playing. The game is Monte Cook's personal take on the World of Darkness by White Wolf. However, it utilizes the D20 system since Monte was one of the main authors of D&D 3rd Edition.
Overall, I highly recommend it. Our characters are currently around 14th level, and we have had a blast playing it. The magic system is point based instead of memorization. The magic seems very balanced but is a bit complicated. For some, one negative is that there is only one book, and there will be no others. I personally don't find this to be a problem since the book is big and very thorough. |

Re: Starting an RPG group
Meh. Deadlands for the win. A wild west horror game... with supernaturals, as requested. Not only ghosts n' goblin-type stuff, but you can have a character that plays poker with the devil to have his magic activate. How cool is that?
They have 3 versions... a d20 one, a custom one, and one based on teh Savage Worlds game. |
