Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
Quite.
Though the Incendiborgs were crushing it in rounds 1-4. They deserve their reputation. |

Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
Sadly, I didn't realize how powerful the Incendiborgs were. Three of my games I didn't need to use anything else and won giving up no points. I believe I used them once when they first were released, but hadn't used them since. When I have played against them, I remember them being good but not that good. My original army was a late scratch due to stupidity as one of the units was from the wrong planet. I figured bringing DW 7000 would offset them, since I have yet to get him to kill anywhere near his points. I am definitely glad I didn't win since they seem like cheese and am extremely happy for Xanth and especially appreciate his patience and kindness while playing against my daughter. He is growing up to be a fine young man, an accomplishment given his role model. (Just kidding Clan, don't throw your dice at me) The look on Xanth's face when he won was priceless. True joy is rare to see. It has been fun to watch these guys grow up over the years.

If you used either Volcan map, could you let me know how it went? No big deal if not, I understand that there were extra maps.

Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
We did use the Volcan map, but I didn't play on it. I'm actually not sure which it was.
@Gurei-Ornery
brought it. I know
@pieface!
played on it and I believe
@akden
did as well. I can't remember who else.

Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
Here's a quick synopsis of the events in my day on Sat. 10/18/14. I hope to come back to this tomorrow to "flesh-it-out" with a few more details - if I can sufficiently stimulate the grey matter between my ears to allow the proper neurons to connect and provide a less fuzzy picture.
My car was all packed and ready to go, but I stayed up too late and the anticipation jitters gave me a restless night. So it seemed like the alarm clock rang at Oh-Dark-Thirty as I stumbled into the shower and finally rolled out of my driveway at 7:30, right on schedule, according to Plan-A. I headed down Routes 50 to 49 to 55 to 40 to I-95 to I-97 and as I came off the exit ramp and around the bend the G&S store was practically right in front of me at about 11:45 AM. Very easy to find, as long as you've got a GPS guiding the way. And I was VERY impressed with the venue. Wow! What a nice store with friendly staff and PLENTY of space to game. The 25 of us only occupied approximately 16.7% of the room when we took over three entire rows of tables, while a big MtG tournament was going on in the center section and about a dozen guys were playing FoW on the far side. Anyway, after creating and BRINGING about thirty (30) different combinations, I finally decided that my Army would be from the Planet Earth and consist of: 4x squads of the British Red Coats (10th Regiment of Foot), led by the Roman warlord Marcus Decimus Gallus because of his enhancement to soldiers under his, oops my control , also Eldgrim the Viking Champion who when he gets killed can still add a movement bonus to a hero (obviously Marcus), and finally the ninja Isamu as a ten point filler. That's 19 figures on 19 hexes at exactly 440 points. My end result was 2 WINS and 3 LOSSES, which got me ranked in 14th place, out of the Winner's Circle and prizes, but I had a GREAT time and that's what really matters. I'm happy for any chance to play this silly, ah-hmm [clears throat] "light war game." And I'm delight to not finish in last place ( - been there, done that) ... and break into my Happy Dance whenever I end up in the top half( - at my age, that's not a pretty sight). My new BFF, G-O, was kind enough to give me a Mage Knight Iron Rain Hill Giant figure to add to my collection. Which may show up as Mok at the next tournament. So I went home very pleased that the trip was worth the effort and expense. GAME #1. was vs. @Tiepilot1138 who claimed to have only discovered the HeroScape game a few weeks ago, but played very well. His Army had: Deathwalker 9,000, Deathwalker 8,000, Deathreavers x1, and two squads of Zettian Infantry. We played on "Gravel Garden." His DW9 with one squad of ZI's came around my right flank, while the DW8 and the other squad of ZI's was held in reserve and eventually came at my left flank. It was difficult to get any high ground advantages within range of my targets and I just could not bring up enough of my 10th Reg guys fast enough as it seemed like at least one of them was getting killed every turn. My confidence was in them was shaken when an Explosive Special Attack put the last wound on Eldgrim and destroyed 3 of the Red Coats all at once, ouch! I just kept shooting and stabbing the 3 Zettians on my right until they were gone and took repeated shots at DW9 whenever I could. He finally died and I had to turn my attention to DW8 and 3 more ZI's on the other side of the board. Meanwhile, I stupidly left Marcus in a vulnerable position on center stage and the Deathreavers went after him and tied him up, so in the next round I had to risk a double Leaving Engagement to make a 5 dice Attack roll against the big robot. When the time was up and the points calculated, I had 214 and my opponent had 207. So I was feeling good that my first game was a WIN, but I should have realized that I was making mistakes, since the 10th should have done better and this match up ended really close. GAME #2. was vs. Stephen Universe who brought Master of the Hunt, Tandros Kreel, 2x Phantom Knights, and a Sahuagin Raider to the table. We played on "Tree Line." From the beginning until almost the very end, his PK's dominated the high ground, a ridge running across the center of the map. I just had to persistently make uphill bayonet charges against the ghostly green warriors because shooting at them was attacking the DW9 in the previous game - rolling 9 Defense Dice was simply laughable. In the second round he brought Tandros out from the Start Zone, but left him at the foot of the mountain. So I turned my attention primarily on him and engaged him with a height advantage, first with one 10th Reg. and then another and finally destroyed him with Marcus who slowly made his way over the crest of the hill. I guess in retaliation for this insult, Stephen brought the Master of the Hunt out of the Start Zone and attacked my Roman warlord. By now he was running out of PK's, since they just could not survive three or four bayonet attacks. Once they came off of their perches to attack my guys, I hit them one at a time from several angles. I pulled Marcus out of the fight with the MotH and let the 10th Reg. surround him and take him down. I totally forgot about the Sahuagin until now, but the time was up and I obviously WON that game since I had only lost 239 points (54.3%) in the process. GAME #3. was vs. @Gurei-Ornery with one unique squad of Vulcanmech Incendiborgs, 4x Hoplitrons, and DW 7000. We played on "Remains of Clionesia." Even though I had read the C3V postings about the VI's and Hop's when they were first released, I had never seen them on a battlefield and I hadn't read their cards in a very long time. so this was going to be a new experience. G-O sent the VI's straight at me down the center of the board. And I responded by getting as many 10th Reg guys into action as quickly as I could. But it seemed like every time I dented their armor, at least two of my guys were getting flame-thower'ed to death. I finally decided to send marcus into the fray and hopefully deliver a killing blow with is 5 Attack dice. As he came around the corner of the ruins wall on my left flank, he was looking up at two of the I-borgs perched on the high ground. He quickly took two wounds before he could engage them, so I retreated him back behind the wall. An IV gave chase and came down into my Start Zone to kill MDG. Although I hadn't intended to use Marcus as bait, I could utilize my other 10th Reg. guys that were still in the Start Zone. It was careless Order Marker placement on my part, but I discovered that the Bayonette Charge served as an effective can-opener to dismantle the things once their reactive armor had been depleted. Eventually I managed to destroy the other two by dancing around them on the limited high ground and didn't pay attention to the DW-7000 approaching until it self detonated to take two more Red Coats with it. I think I only had 3 soldiers left of the original 16 in my army and managed to kill two of the Hop's at maximum range from height before they were sliced and diced. We only had time for one more Round and it came down to G-O's 2x Hoplitrons @ 35 pts. each vs. my Elgrim and Isamu @ only 40 pts. total, so I knew that I had to destroy at least one of them or loose the game. I had to be aggressive, but was too zealous and although I accomplished my task, Elgrim took two wounds in the process (one for Over-Extending in order reach and engage the H-tron. Final score was G-O 420 for the WIN to my 405. Such a close one, but a lot of exciting fun all the way through. GAME #4. was vs. @akden with Grimnak, Tornak, and 3x Heavy Gruts Orcs. We played on "Cut(Th)road." After such a disappointing defeat, my dice suddenly went ice cold and repeatedly stared at Blank Attacks and double or triple Red Skull defenseless Defensive rolls. Maybe I was over confident that my 16 10th Reg soldiers could easily handle only 12 of the Heavy Orcses, but somehow they go to the high ground locations before I did and every time I knocked one off, another one took it's place. Meanwhile, Grimnack was there on my right flank, just a few hexes away from my Start Zone. And even though he was successfully engaged and "tied down," his Tera-Byte (or terrible bite) kept chomping away at my squad figures one after another every turn another one was gone off the board and the repeated Bayonette Charges hardly pierced his thick dinosaur hide. Arrrgh! It was a very frustrating match and I was glad when it was finally over. No doubt, Akden deserved the WIN, he handled his army extremely well. I guess my heart was not in it to win it, because it was by now late afternoon and I was becoming battle weary since my enthusiasm was depleted. GAME #5. was vs. @CatScaper with 4x 4th Mass. Line Infantry, Samuel Brown, Krav Maga Agents. We played on "Vulcan Ruins." Now it was the end of the day and I knew that there was no way I was going to win one of the prizes, so I just played along to enjoy the rest of the event. Besides I would never allow myself to take advantage of young gamer who hasn't even read Jomini or Clauswitz yet and probably believes that Sun-Tzu is Chinese restaurant instead of a philosopher. Anyway, the game board looked like a American Revolutionary War scene with her blue coated 4th Mass. Inf. matched up against my red coated 10th Regiment. As is my nature, I relished the teachable moments and coached her movements a little bit, so she would have better advantages when shooting at my guys and not leave her own figures stranded on the Lava Field tiles at the end of each round. Maybe I wasn't as aggressive as I could have been and a little sloppy in where I placed my Order Markers, but we traded figures each turn to keep the points balanced and she eventually killed my last one (Isamu) for a legitimate WIN and I had a good feeling about how I played the Meta-Game, since I couldn't manipulate the dice with a Jedi mind trick. Congratulations to Xanth for winning another tournament, it kind of irked me that I loaned him that third squad of Sentinels which allowed him to take home the trophy and grand prize, but he has come a long way since first we met and is a fine HS player, who shows good sportsmanship. At least I have the bragging rights that I haven't been defeated by Xanth this year. My only regret is not being able to play against BILL and only because I saw that he was using an all Vaarkanan Army, which is was I brought with me and played a few months ago in Savage. They are awesome L00KING figures, but I discovered then that they are fragile and I was curious to see if he had a more successful strategy to utilize them than I had. Oh well, C'est la guerre ; - ) ~~lol~~ until next time John G. Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
I know it's a bit of a long shot, but did any of you find a bin with a bunch of wyrmlings among your things after this event? I am alarmed to realize, after packing up from this last event, that I cannot find them, and they were in use at this event.

Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
NOPE, not me. I am particularly pedantic about packing up my own stuff for the long trip home and I don't remember seeing ANY Wyrmlings recently. They definitely did not come to UTNJ. Maybe they flew south for the Winter.

Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
Sorry, I didn't end up with them, either. Hope you find a few leads. Have you tried calling the game store, in case someone found them and turned them in? Unlikely, unfortunately, but still possible.

Re: Maryland NHSD 2014 Post-Tourney Thread
I checked. The store had nothing turned in. I still think (hope) they will probably turn up somewhere, but I'm a bit distressed. It was all of our wyrmlings, except for two.
