I normally send Marcus out with the Romans for a turn or two, just to get him to a good position. I follow them up with the 4th Mass and MBS catches up to the army with his 8 move. Once MBS dies, Valguard usually comes in. He also serves as the heavy hitter of the army, though 4th Mass adjacent to Marcus do pretty well too. Like battle reports? Romans x 2 - 100 Valguard - 210 NGS - 300 Sonlen - 460 and fill in the rest with whatever amount of points you're playing with, usually I throw in Guilty and Isamu. I call it my tank army. NGS and Valguard are like tanks and Sonlen is there for the occassional heal and range support. It's been a lot of fun. It's even beaten a glad/ blast army, but that was mostly because of last minute heroics of Isamu and an elf that refused to die. Re: The Book of Valguard
Ah, Sonlen! My Valguard army was constructed pre-Dragon Healing, but that's a pretty cool idea.
It worked out alright, but it taught how me careful you have to be with Braxas. I guess healing is actually more beneficial for higher defense figures, like Ne-Gok-Sa in your army. Speaking of which...I want to try yours too. Maybe with Theracus. |

Re: The Book of Valguard
For a pure Melee beatdown, I kind of like the idea of:
4x Romans 200 Marcus 300 Ne-Gok-Sa 390 Valguard 500 I'd try it, but I don't have enough Legionnaires. |

Re: The Book of Valguard
Valguard pulled it out last night!
I was bonding him with 2 sets of Legos. He went in deep to get Realin. The kyrie warrior was protecting Kaemon, Sullivan, N-G-S, and Sonlen. Valguard was engaged by Kaemon and took the disengagement swipe for 1 wound, got in on Raelin and managed NO skulls. As the game wore on, I focused my assault utilizing the 10th Reg. All the while Valguard kept getting tagged by Sonlen with Dragon Swoop and the Archmage's regular attack. He was up to 6 wounds. In a desperate lunge, Valguard chanced a swipe to get after a hugely annoying Sonlen - no He brought his immense warhammer to bear on the pointy hood of the elf - . Sonlen, with height and Realin bonus, easily shook it off, his little red dragon on his shoulder grinning and planning all the while... Amazingly, the Legos came forward and slaughtered Sonlen. This left Valguard free and with movement to engage Raelin. The initiative was rolled (and I'd lost probably 80% of the rolls so far) and Einar's forces got the jump. Valguard leaped off his perch, engaged Raelin and laid down Raelin with two wounds on her, blocked 1 skull and crumpled in a heap of broken armor, bones and mechanical feathers. YEEEEEAAAAAAH!!!! Horn head, ya did it! Ya really did it! ~ It's frustrating to move upfield with Valguard seeking a specific target and only to have his attack potency neutered by a simple engagement. But don't get me wrong, half the fun with Valguard (and Dupuis in this regard) is disengaging to continue an objective. What really hurts is rolling crappy when the target is finally engaged and having the Wild Einar Warlord's attack reset to a measly 2 Attack. I do like how Valguard bonds with the potency of Legos or S.B. As evidenced, they can lay the hurt to free up Valguard or assist in an assassination. |

Re: The Book of Valguard
Cool story HEH.
Valguard is probably my favorite of that often neglected Heroes of Trollsford pack. Similar to Sir Denrick and the 80 point Viking brothers, I think what holds him back the most is just the potency of the other Warlords- Marcus, NGS, and MBS for the Romans, or Marcus and Parmenio for the Greeks. There never seems to be quite enough points for him once you take the above. 7 lives and 4 defense mean that he sticks around for awhile though, and can take leaving engagement attacks more often than any of the other Warlords. |

Re: The Book of Valguard
Valguard with Thorgy's, Finny's, and Eldy's bonuses really lays down the hurt on opponents!

Re: The Book of Valguard
One of my army ideas for the upcoming Nebraska Skirmish, where all melee armies get a 20% in points, is -
Romans x 4 - 200 Tarn - 250 NGS - 340 Valguard - 450 Kelda - 530 Shoot the Tarn out first with order marker 1 and 2 to secure glyphs and maybe get a berzerker roll. Follow up with the Romans and the 2 "tank" Warlords. Have Kelda keep the 2 "tanks" healthy and ready to hit hard. Re: The Book of Valguard
Have to ask, in the Age of Zelrig (), are you all still using Romans more than Greeks? (It seems that all of the suggested/possible armies posted in the last page have assumed Romans over Greeks.) Just curious as to your thinking--is it mostly b/c Marcus is a better buy than Parmenio (with the movement and attack bonus) or just that this is a Valguard thread, so the cost of having to use Parmenio to get the Disciplined bonus isn't worth it?
(Sorry to derail a bit, but I think it is still somewhat on topic.) New? Read this. | The INDEX 2.0 | Mmirg's Maps Magnify Your Scape: BoV | SoV | C3V (Playtest!) | C3G The Dice Tower Con w/ Scape! |
