Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
Finished Luke Cage tonight. More good stuff from Marvel, the I think it's the weakest of their Netflix shows. Some really good stuff and some not so good stuff.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
I'm through four or five episodes and enjoying it. I really like Mike Colter and I like how this doesn't feel like Jessica Jones or Daredevil, which did not feel like each other. I also thought those were two of the best superhero shows anywhere, tv or film, so that's a pretty high bar. I won't compare it, yet.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
I did enjoy it DS, but if I had to rank it compared to the others, it was below them. I agree it is different than the other two, which were different from each other as well. So that's good, in that they are not just samey with different characters.
I also really like Mike Colter. Perfect casting and he does really good. Hand of fate is moving and the finger points to you ...Iron Maiden - The Wicker Man TUTORIAL FOR RE-BASING FIGURES 3hrs 43mins 32secs = 1242nd of 8808 overall - 1988 Honolulu Marathon |

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
Mike Colter was born to play Luke Cage, the way Robert Downey, Jr., was born to play Tony Stark. And, in another genre, Colin Firth was born to play Fitzwilliam Darcy. Sometimes that lightning strikes.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
I also enjoyed Luke Cage but thought it was the weakest of the 3 different Netflix Marvel shows. I attributed some of that to the villains. Purple Man is perhaps the best MCU villain to date and Kingpin was also exceptionally well done. None of the villains in Luke Cage measured up in comparison. I actually liked Cottonmouth better than Diamondback from a screen presence stand point. It is too bad they didn't explore the "does he have gills?" comment better. Looking forward to the seeing the Defenders team-up, it is shaping up quite well.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
I loved the central question in Luke Cage asking how much of who we are is our circumstance and how much is our choice of how to respond. The difference between the "good guys" and the "bad guys" was whether they allowed their character to fall to circumstance or whether they stood tall regardless. I also deeply appreciated all the nuanced characters.

I do think it got a little political and it by the end it seemed more social commentary than comic book movie. I understand it of course, as it was an opportunity to reach a lot of people, but it was pretty overt. Regarding Jessica Jones, perhaps it was easier to watch a stand up hero like Luke, than a flawed heroine such as Jessica. Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
Heh, my problem with watching JJ is that I find the scenes with the Purple Man stomach wrenching. Loved Jessica. Her villain just put me through the wringer.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
Yeah, that's fair. He was *tough*. I remember hearing Tennant talk about playing that part, he said that "nobody thinks of himself as a villain." That's where that came from.

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
I haven't watched any of the Marvel shows on Netflix yet (besides the first episode of Daredevil I guess). Is there one of them in particular that is a good starting point?

Re: TV: What Are You Watching?
Many people like the first season of Daredevil as the best of the best. It's a straightforward, fairly dark presentation of the subject matter. It's really, really good.
I have a slight preference for Jessica Jones, which feels a little bit more like a detective show, though there's a *lot* of fighting in that, too. Both are really, really good. The only other alternative is DD Season 2, and I don't think anyone would suggest you start there. |
