Re: The Book of Animated Vines
That’d be great! I tried an attenpt with pipe cleaners using some of the vines you gave me. (Not my greatest success) But I think I have enough left to do it that way as well.

Re: The Book of Animated Vines
***Plastic Plant Vines were trimmed off of an aquarium plant I picked up at a yard sale years and years ago. Should be easy enough to find something similar for others who want to make these proxy figures.***
Step 1 – Shaping a wire frame: Take a paper clip, leave the inner most “U” shape as is (this will be the frame base) while stretching out the rest such that it moves straight up from the base in a curvy shape (this is the frame). Use a needle point pliers to bend a small hook on the end of the wire at the top of the frame. Adjust the shape and positioning of frame over the frame base until the frame will stand up on the frame base without being held. Once the frame and frame base are balanced, wrap the vine tightly around the frame starting at the top hook and working your way down to the frame base. Trim the vine length accordingly and see if it will stand without being held up. If not adjust the frame once more until it does. Set the completed frame structure on a figure base. Step 2 – Painting: Remove the vine from the frame and set it aside. Be sure to devise a way to keep track of which vine went to which frame to make it easier to reassemble later. Completely paint the frame and frame base with black, white, or gray paint and let it dry. This is will be the base coat. Once that is dry, paint the frame and frame base green. If you intend to dress up the figure base, also paint it green at this time. Once dry again, wrap the vines around the frames once more and make sure they still stand on their own, adjust if needed. (note: I didn't wait long enough for the paint to fully dry and when wrapping the plastic vine around the painted wire I rubbed some of the paint off exposing the wire once more. As such I had to do some paint touch up after assembly.) Step 3 – Gluing: Use super glue to glue the frame base to a figure base, then set aside an allow it to dry in place. Once dry, apply super glue along the intertwined frame/vine length and let that dry completely as well. Step 4 - Basing: Apply a thin layer of clear dry crafting glue to the Animated Vines figure base, then add grass flocking. Shake off the loose flock and set aside to dry. You can also add bits of the vine you trimmed down earlier to the base to add some additional plant life. |
