Clawfoot Interceptor Public Playtesting


The figures used for this unit are D&D Attack Wing figures. The names of the figures used are Aaracockra Troop.

CLAW GRAB
While this Clawfoot Interceptor is flying, you may choose one small figure or one friendly medium Raptorian figure that it passed over this turn. Place the chosen figure on an empty same-level space adjacent to this Clawfoot Interceptor at the end of its move. If the chosen figure is engaged when it is moved by Claw Grab, it will not take any leaving engagement attacks. Figures under overhangs can never be moved by Claw Grab.

DIVE BOMB
If this Clawfoot Interceptor uses its Flying special power this turn, it receives 2 additional attack dice.

FLYING
When counting spaces for a Clawfoot Interceptor's movement, ignore elevations. A Clawfoot Interceptor may fly over water without stopping, pass over figures without becoming engaged, and fly over obstacles such as ruins. When a Clawfoot Interceptor starts to fly, if it is engaged it will take any leaving engagement attacks.

am i reading it wrong or is the wording weird? "you may choose one small figure or one friendly medium Raptorian figure" does this mean that the friendly figure has to be medium and can't be grabbed if its small or does the second part also include small figures?

It means you can pick up a small enemy figure or a small or medium friendly figure.
Small figure=any small figure
Medium friendly figure= just friendly medium figures. I think the theme behind this is that the unit can forcibly grab and control any small figure, but can only grab and control a willing medium figure.

"Small figure" is any small figure, yours or your opponent's.

You can also pick up a friendly medium Raptorian figure.

Which units survived?
Charos (1 life)

Mohicans develped very conservatively and got about 6 heightened shots off on Charos and greenscales doing a few wound before the Dragon King arrived and from that point wounds were very hard to put on him, although the scales did start to get thinned out, (but so did the Mohicans)

Rygarn flexed where possible allowing a 2 wound Dive Bomb onto Charos and a Bowhunter to get an attack of 4 for another wound. Brave Arrow got a big 3 wound strike, but the dragon would not be felled as he took out all oncomers.

Rygarn got the big dragon to 1 life, but counterstrike, wannok, and no temporal shifts ended the time traveler.

How useful were playtesting units' powers and how often did they come into play?
-No Talon Grab
-Dive bomb was used once for a 6v5 down on Charos that got 2 wounds
-Interceptor died in 1 attack. A 6v3 from Charos.

Damage done: 2 hits on Charos (~47)

Any additional comments (theme, balance, fun factor with and against)?
Not much to say on this one. Rygarn flexed to Interceptor when a heightened position opened up next to Charos. The Interceptor didn't survive to the next round to try anything else.

An interceptor grabbed Bol and went to height with its 8 move while the Havechs started rolling out. Zetacron killed one, then fell to Havech range fire, but a 2nd Havech died to a plasma surge in the attack.

2nd Round became snakes vs. marroborgs, with the Havechs leery of ranged attacks it was fairly even for a time. When the Snakes were starting to get light, the 2nd Interceptor in the SZ dive bombed 2 Havechs to really thin them out.

Order marker became tricky here though, with a life Interceptor, 3 life VW, and 2 Armocs left against 3 Havech, Yi Feng. Abandoning the battle in the south, the first Interceptor Dive Bombed (carrying Bol) into a sleeping Yi Feng. The Interceptor took 2 wounds (from a disengage and Iron Shirt), but killed monk.

This left VW, 2 Interceptors (both wounded), Bol vs. 2 Havechs.

VW died, then one of the Havech to a dive bomb, then the Interceptor, and then Bol got the win after the Venoc Warlord's OMs shifted to him.

How useful were playtesting units' powers and how often did they come into play?
-Talon Grab was used 3 times, all carrying Bol. 2nd time it blocked Yi Feng from getting even ground vs. Interceptor, 3rd time it meant Bol was in attack position to get the winning attack against the Havech
-Dive bomb was used 6 times (disegnaged 3 times to do it, 1/3 wounds)
-Interceptors received 8 order markers (1 movement, 6 Dive Bombs, 1 normal attack)


Damage done: Yi Feng and 4 Havechs (180 points killed in 100 points of Interceptors)

Any additional comments (theme, balance, fun factor with and against)?
I really liked the threat range of the interceptors with Venoc Warlord on the field. Bol almost seems like an auto add to me in a non Raptorian army after seeing how it played out. Bol can soak up an order markers lost by the fragile Interceptor. Really fun outing for them

An interceptor grabbed Bol and went to height with its 8 move while axegrinders started moving out along with the snakes

2nd Round was mostly snakes and dwarves but the Interceptor swooped down to take an axegrinder out of position and kill another one.

A 3 life Ulfrid died with Grim Determination failing up on an Armoc, but the numbers game and bad Viper defense helped the tide slowly move towards the dwarves.

The first interceptor darted around grabbing dwarves and killing them, but Darrak went into the SZ and killing the other Interceptor. That left the Interceptor against 5 dwarves and Darrak. They were spread out and the Interceptor did some more dive bombs, but was eventually surrounded and finished off.

How useful were playtesting units' powers and how often did they come into play?
-Talon Grab was used 5 times, all carrying Bol twice, and grabbing an enemy dwarf the other times.
-Dive bomb was used 6 times (disegnaged 2 times to do it, 1/2 wounds)


Damage done: 4 axegrinders, 2D Darrak (100 points killed in 100 points of Interceptors). All damage done by 1 of the 2 Interceptors. Other one died without receiving an order marker in the SZ

Any additional comments (theme, balance, fun factor with and against)?

Still digging the 8 move interceptor with Bol, although honestly I probably would have been better served to claw grab my other Interceptor to get him to height instead. Interceptors with Mittens make for a fun build. I'll probably try some Beakface armies next as that looks like a fun combo with flocking.

I don't think there's any reason there can't be good Raptorians. We've seen a similar thing with Soulborgs (who enslaved the Mariedians), where you still do have a faction or two that is noble. With these being more Eagle-like than Raven-like, it seemed like a natural place to make that little jump.

Army 1: Venoc Warlord, Venoc Vipers x2, Roman Legionnaires x2, Clawfoot Interceptor x2 (400)
Army 2: Tor-Kul-Na, Marden Nagrubs x3, Ne-Gok-Sa

I thought it would be pretty cool to see how some speedy snakes and Interceptors did on a smaller map. The Vipers fell pretty flat, only putting one wound on Torky and taking down one nagrub in the first round before they were gone. I tried to push the Romans out on the battlefield but Torky made it to their starting zone and started wrecking havoc. One Interceptor ate it pretty quick, but the other one managed to pull off a pretty neat trick. A nagrub was blocking the opening behind Tor-Kul-Na, so the Interceptor flew over and picked the nagrub up and then set down in that spot, dive-bombing Torky from height. Got 2 wounds on him and cut him off from his supply of nagrub treats. That was it for the Interceptor tho, never put another order marker on it and Torky and the nagrubs finished it off without much problem. The Venoc Warlord got one-shotted by a 6 skull roll after that too. The Romans eventually managed to bring down Torky, and the few remaining nagrubs were easy to clean up, but Ne-Gok-Sa proved to be too tough and took down the last 3 legionnaires. Full-life Ne-Gok-Sa was the only unit left.

A couple of dive-bombs on Tor-Kul-Na would have been really useful, but unfortunately he got to the opposite start-zone before I had developed the Romans and started putting order markers on the Interceptors. The one turn I took with an Interceptor was pretty productive tho! I also guess it wasn't too bad that they soaked up some wounds that otherwise would have gone to Legionnaires as well.

The beatings will continue until morale improves!

Army 1: Venoc Warlord, Clawfoot Interceptor, Kozil, Fyorlag Spider x2 (380 points)
Army 2: Raelin RotV, Krav Maga Agents, Sentinels of Jandar x2 (400 points)

Some speedy spiders ran out with Kozil and managed to get to the opposing start-zone before a screen of Sentinels could be fully deployed. A spider actually knocked out a sleeping Krav, which was pretty clutch. Kozil was able to bulldoze his way through the screen of Sentinels, taking some leaving engagement hits, but got to Raelin and crushed her in a few turns. Didn't have much luck with Wounded Rage tho, and the Sentinels started putting a bunch of wounds on him while also chopping through spiders. Moved the Interceptor onto an initiative glyph on a turn 3, and managed a pretty neat move with the initiative swing. Put order marker 1 on the Interceptor, swooped in and picked up the penultimate Fyorlag, and then set it down out of harms way in the opponent's start-zone while simultaneously sandwiching a Sentinel between the Interceptor and Kozil. Managed to kill the Sentinel with Dive Bomb too, which was sweet, but I think more importantly I bought a couple extra turns of the spider bonding with Kozil, so the owlbear could keep crushing Sentinels while the spider went after the two Krav (I figured 3 attacks from the Sentinels were better than 2 from range with the Krav at this point so they didn't have any order markers on them). The Interceptor got smacked pretty quickly after that, and Kozil and the spider also went down, but all that was left was 2 Sentinels and 2 Krav vs Mittens. Was pretty close, but eventually 1 Sentinel and 1 of the Krav managed to scrape together enough shields and skulls to outlast the viper.

The Interceptor had 2 big turns (and that was all of its turns), setting up an initiative swing and then grabbing a spider out of harms way AND killing a Sentinel, which think was a pretty good showing. In this kind of army, an Interceptor acts as an interesting utility piece that can also lay down a big attack before it goes down quickly. The scout army probably could have pulled off the win if I had included Marcu as another wave of clean-up, but I totally blanked on that and didn't realize that until now.

The beatings will continue until morale improves!
