I hope the shape of the cards stays the same, but how about replace the Basic stats side (dump the Basic Game mechanics) with character bios (as someone else, I forget who, suggested on Discord).

So they won't call it a "Master Set" but there has to be some kind of "Base Set" or "Starter Set" with figures, terrain, and rules. If they sold terrain and figures completely separately, then new players would have to make two purchases to be able to play and that is a restrictive barrier to entry. I believe RotV was sold at a loss to draw new players in.

I have a lengthier post regarding this topic over in the prediction thread. The quick and dirty of it is that I think AH/the War Council will release a broader product line at launch, essentially combining the idea of the traditional master set, figure expansion wave, and terrain set into a single release, much like how many miniatures games release products nowadays.


Your point about the multiple purchases is definitely a critical factor. If my release predictions are generally true, we may also see a smaller starter set that includes just enough content to play the game. Much like the D&D and Pathfinder starter sets that are relatively inexpensive introductions to the respective system while also providing the critical components to get a sense of the full experience.

I don't think a HasLab campaign would be a good sign for us. They usually reserve those for products they think wouldn't do well at retail, but collectors would buy in small numbers.

HeroQuest got done through Haslab because they didn't know if it would do well. It did so well that they realized there was a retail market for it. I saw a comment about that making them realize there is a market for other gaming properties, and that was the inspiration for the HeroScape relaunch.

I would like to see what kinds of exclusives would be included with a Haslab campaign but Haslab products are taking 1.5 years to get to buyers now. If it goes to retail we will likely have it much sooner.

So hopefully they were inspired enough to go straight to retail with it.

I think the board gaming industry has really changed since Heroscape was last out. There's a significant, thriving board game market targeted to board gamers in particular. I'd rather see a game that could thrive that way than one that had to do "Walmart numbers" to stick around.

Regarding card shape, why not both. Have the original 7 hex card, and a more standard rectangular card. I think the limiting factor for cost would be the 7 hex shape as that would require some special tooling at the printer. I assume adding the rectangular in addition to the familiar 7 hex would cost pennies or fractions of pennies to print and ship.
