Freeblades and ArcWorlde

I posted these in another thread, but they should be noticed on their own. I would say that both scratch the same itch as Scape, really fun games that you can play over beer (or soda) and pretzels.

ArcWorlde just had it's 2nd edition Kickstarted and it's a very simple but incredibly fun skirmish game.

Pros:
  • Incredibly simple game, uses a D6 system
  • You can roll lots of dice
  • Very easy to play, hard to really master. It's great for kids!
  • The Feat mechanic allows you to do anything you can imagine
  • 100% Hand sculpted miniatures, all full of character, by the very talented Alex Huntley
  • Family operated, Alex's father does the figure casting and his mother does shipping and other office keeping.
  • Fairly cheap to buy into factions and purchase the whole line
  • Low model count and lots of customization within your army
  • You can mix models in factions with a slight penalty
  • Many sculpts are one piece and require no assembly
  • Games usually have 2 or more victory conditions
  • Compact game, it really only requires a 3'x 3' area
  • Living rulebook that is currently free
  • Warploque is very social and present on Facebook

Cons:
  • The metal castings leave a little to be desired, compared to the resin castings
  • It really requires 3D terrain and a lot of scenery
  • Starter warband balance is good if you know how to play, but bad for new players. Elves and Beastmen will almost always just beat the Hobbits
  • Bigger models have some issue with parts fitting, greenstuff will be required
  • Some models that do require assembly require glue on tiny joints (especially elves)
  • A 3'x 3' play area might still be too big for some people

Freeblades is a very small but strong community and it's like playing a skirmish game and an RPG.

Pros:
  • Incredibly great line of figures
  • The stat system allows a lot of thinking outside the box. It plays a lot like an RPG
  • A lot of customization with equipment
  • Very tight rule set
  • Metal sculpts are incredibly detailed and very few require assembly
  • Very cheap to buy into a single faction. 2 players can play a starter game for under $100
  • Models are very well balanced outside of starter sets, there really isn't a meta list
  • Model abilities allow a lot of flexibility in what they do every round
  • Exploding Dice mechanic adds a lot to a roll. (more on that at the bottom of the post, it deserves it's own topic)
  • The rules allow a max of 18 models, most freebands won't hit over 12
  • Living rulebook that is updated every few months, buy it for $10 and you get the updates for life
  • Some models can play multiple factions
  • Most games have multiple victory conditions
  • DGS is very social and present on Facebook

Cons:
  • It really requires a lot of 3D terrain for the best effect
  • Starter warband balance is good if you know how to play, but bad for new players. Demons and Knights are incredibly strong
  • Flashing on models is inconsistent
  • Some models that do require assembly require glue on tiny joints
  • It's supposed to be played on a 4'x 4' area, which can be just too big
  • Some factions have 12 models, some factions have 30
  • List building has certain requirements, it can be seen as restricting

Exploding Dice in Freeblades: The game uses every numbered die from D4 to D14 for beginners, up to D30 if you do campaigns and level up characters. When you roll the maximum number on a die (an 8 on a d8, for example) you can reroll the die, adding the result to the total. You can reroll an exploding die as many times as you roll the maximum number. So a d8 can end up rolling a total of 30 or 40, there's actually a record being kept of the highest exploding dice rolls per die on the website.
