Do you have the errata'd starting zones?

Destroyer in US East Coast waters (where the transport is), and 5 more Russian infantry in Moscow.
I didn't know they errata'd the starting zones! Though 8 infantry in Moscow would definitely slow down the German invasion. The destroyer is a nice escort for the transport to get past the sub. (Thing is, the Allies definitely need those bonuses. I usually am forced to take Axis. I just happen to win every time! )

Yeah, it's the most unbalanced of the series. I really think it's meant to be a teaching tool; newbies play Axis and experienced players play Allies. Then once they get a hang of it, they can move on to other games in the series. (If you like 1941, check out 1942 Second Edition! Probably the best in the series and one of the most balanced. [Russia just needs 2-3 Infantry in Moscow, I think.])

Anyway, try that, and if your games are still unbalanced, do a blind bidding system.

Both of you bid points to play Allies (like say 12 vs 15 points). The one who bids the least uses those points to add that many points worth of figures to the Allies' side of the board, in any way they choose (like 4 infantry, or 2 tanks, or 1 bomber, for example) and will play the Allies in that game.

It's just unbalanced because I'm just that good.

1942 Does seem like a good game to pick up.

Oops, rolled a 1.

Yeah, I was already booked for that time slot before Imperial Assault even came out, otherwise I probably would have tried to play that there.

I am playing Warhammer 1Ks on Thursday, Warhammer Team Tourney on Friday, Wild West Exodus on Saturday and 7 Wonders on Sunday.

I am so unfamiliar with the rules that we may have been playing something entirely different. The rules book that Bill and Ted (the organizers) kept referring to was titled: "By Fire and Sword," which I am assuming is a variant of P&S which I think I was playing with them two months ago.

The funny thing was that whom ever painted these 15mm figures and mounted them on magnetic bases decided to embellish the spearmen units by replacing the white metal pikes with 3" strands of stiff, pointy piano wire. Every time someone tried to maneuver one of these units, they were impaled on the brisling pin cushion.

Luckily there is a good sized group of Bolt Action players at the new store, so I will finally have a regular tabletop mini fix that doesn't just include LegosofBleakewoode.

I played Bolt Action about a year ago at another War Gaming Club near Philadelphia and really enjoyed it. The guys running it had a very well planned out scenario and a beautifully detailed topography with crossroads, buildings, fences, trees, hedge rows, etc. The random activation mechanic seemed awkward at first simply [imo] because it is 'different,' but every one caught on quickly and it became routine by the game's final round.

Whenever I've seen DUST TACTICS on a store shelf, it has fascinated me, but I've never played it or even witnessed it being played anywhere. Flames of War is another one that in spite of it's teeny-tiny miniatures, looks like it would satisfy the craving for a WW-II historical simulation. But I can not afford another collectible miniatures games right now and will have to be content with my old (orig. ed.) of A&A that's collecting dust on my shelf.

HOWEVER, tonight I did get in TWO sessions of FF's Star Wars: X-Wing game with worthy opponents from my local FaceBook group: "South Jersey/Philly Area Star Wars X-Wing Miniature Game Alliance," which is now boasting over two hundred members.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Tonight I played:

A Fistful of Dinero with 6 players. Fun game, though I got dynamite tossed at me early to cause a 2 wound Heavy damage and then a Tomahawk thrown at me for a 1 wound Light damage. My Hit the Dirt and my Cover cards were useless against those attacks because they weren't from shooting attacks. Did get shot a couple times to get my 4th and 5th wounds and killed out of the game.

Terrya Mystica with 4 players. This was only my second game of this and it has been a while since playing it last time. I played the Darklings race and actually kicked butt and finished in first with 118 points to 104, 86 and 72.

@Johngee , Dust Warfare (gridless and more depth than Tactics) is fantastic. I am going to try it with Bolt Action's random activation mechanic very soon, hopefully.

As for Axis and Allies, when LoB was younger, we used to leave A&A out like a chess set and just play a turn a night when we didn't have time for anything else. I will always love A&A even though it is infuriating to play sometimes and can take forever.

@Hahma , I am not a fan of these types of games, but I have to admit this one entices me. The Darklings sound like a faction I would like.

We played XCOM yesterday at lunch and were getting our bums handed to us by the aliens. I was against the app for purity's sake when I read about it, but it definitely allows for a more streamlined table at least. We plan on taking the kid gloves off today and most likely getting slaughtered.

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?

Johngee,

There is an old minis rules set called With Fire and Sword, which I think was by the Canadian Wargamers Group, and which I probably have lying around here somewhere.

Hahma,

It sounds like A Fistful of Dinero is pretty close to Bang!

I'm still solitairing my way through the seven fanmade 'Epic' (two board) C&C Napoleonics scenarios I found on www.ccnapoleonics.net. by Michael Dippel. I've done four so far, and they are lots of fun.

Yeah G-O, it doesn't seem like most people here are into heavy Euro type games. I've grown to enjoy them on occasion, though I've been introduced to them by several of the guys in my game group and hadn't had to buy them first to find out if I liked them or not.

Terra Mystica has a lot of stuff going on. But once you learn it, it goes pretty well. Each of the different races plays differently and have their own special benefits and restrictions, so that's pretty cool for sure. In the case of the Darklings I played, they relied on priests in order to dig/terraform, which is a key element of the game. So I had to work toward getting more priests to use each round, and to work toward uncovering temples in order to get more as part of my starting resources each round, along with workers, money and moving my power from one bowl to another. Lots of races to choose from to make the game interesting each time and loads of replayability.

I've never played Bang, but since you guys had mentioned it, I looked it upon BGG to get an idea about it. But after that, it seems like they are similar in that it's a spaghetti western type game and you can shoot each other. But with A Fistful of Dinero, you draft your cards like in the game 7 Wonders. Each player starts with 6 cards and you choose one and place it facedown on your gun belt in 1 of 3 spaces. Then pass the leftover cards to the player to your right or left (it changes direction each round) and you get the leftovers from the other player. Then you choose your 2nd card and place it on your gun belt and so on until everyone has 3 facedown cards. Then you discard the leftovers.

After that, you have one chance to swap two of your card positions. Then starting with the first player, he reveals his first card (left most) on his gun belt and resolves it. It can allow him to shoot one of his weapons, or allow him to grab a poker chip from the middle of the table, or place a cover card in front of him that makes it harder for certain players at the table to hit him, or play an aim card that will boost your next shooting attack. Etc.

You don't have hidden roles in A Fistful of Dinero like in Bang. You roll dice to resolve attacks and those dice can be modified. You can throw certain cards to try to hit another player's gun belt to hit them, like with the dynamite, tomahawk, chair etc.

When taking wounds, the weapon that did damage will let you know if it's light or heavy damage. You draw a damage card and it has two halves on the face side, it has a light damage half and a heavy damage half. So you can take usually 1 wound from light damage and 2 wounds from heavy damage. You keep the damage cards in front of you to keep track. A lot of the damage has ongoing effects that may hinder you for the rest of the game, it may allow the player to the left of your rearrange your cards on your gun belt before the phase when you reveal them, it can make you subtract from your attack roll, it can be a gut shot and make you take an extra wound at the end of every round. Many more things can happen.

So while there is the aspect of spaghetti western shooting games that is the same, I'm not sure how much else is. You don't get to play cards from your hand in Dinero, you program your 3 spaces on your gun belt and after you are allowed to swap 2 of them, you are stuck with playing them in that specific order. So if you plan wrong, it can cost you.

Here are a couple videos with some ideas of how it plays:

***D-DAY: JUNE 6, 2015***

Yes, it looks like I'm going to get a second chance to play the entire gigantic 12 player/6 map Memoir 44 D-Day Landings Full Operation Neptune at our NYC FLGS, this time on the actual anniversary itself!

If I can play it here, I can play it anywhere...
