The Book of Solovar
The Book of Solovar The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure from the DC 75th Anniversary set. Its model number and name are #020 / Solovar. _________________________________________________________________ Character Bio - Solovar has long been the king and ruler of the hidden kingdom known as Gorilla City, located in Africa. Its citizens highly respect and honor Solovar, and he is often influential and inspirational to his fellow Simians. Solovar possesses Telepathic powers, like most gorillas. Solovar has clashed with Gorilla Grodd many times, often for the possession of Gorilla City. After many years of rule, Solovar chose to refocus his efforts and become a part of the United Nations, leaving Ulgo to succeed him as ruler of Gorilla City. _________________________________________________________________ -Rulings and Clarifications-

Re: The Book of Solovar - Design Phase
NAME = SOLOVAR
SPECIES = SIMIAN UNIQUENESS = UNIQUE HERO CLASS = KING PERSONALITY = DIPLOMATIC SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5 LIFE = 5 MOVE = 5 RANGE = 1 ATTACK = 4 DEFENSE = 4 POINTS = 260 SIMIAN INSPIRATION If all Order Markers for a round are placed on Simian Army Cards, and at least one Order Marker is placed on this card, then all other Simians you control become inspired. Inspired Simians add 1 to their Move number and add 1 extra defense die for the rest of the round or until Solovar receives one or more wounds. NEGOTIATION Before moving, you may choose one Unique Hero adjacent to Solovar and remove one unrevealed Order Marker at random from the chosen figure's Army Card. Negotiation cannot be used against figures with the Insane personality and can only be used once per round. Solovar cannot attack the chosen figure on the same turn that he uses Negotiation. TELEPATHIC SOLIDARITY Solovar has the class of Telepath in addition to the class listed on this card. When rolling defense dice against a figure that is not a Telepath, Solovar always adds one automatic shield to whatever is rolled. SUPERSTRENGTH SYMBOL Like Superheroes and Comics?

I like the U.N. picture. Anyone have a bigger version?

Is that #2? That's pretty big.
I like #2 a lot. Like Superheroes and Comics?

Re: The Book of Solovar - Design Phase
And the first is of zombie Solovar, so it's not exactly usable.
I'm still not 100% sold on him as a Telepath. He is a King, and really SHOULD be a King. I mean, Telepath makes better sense for gameplay, he should have all those bonuses, yeah, yeah - all true. But it feels weird to not have him as a King. Also, not really big on Negotiation, but, eh, it does its job. JOHNNY139'S CLASSIC CUSTOM THREAD! | Visit now!

I could change his name to King Solovar if you want. His Gorilla Inspiration power and Negotiation represent his calm-kingliness. He is a Telepath, and therefore it is represented as his class, while his powers represent him as a King. Like Superheroes and Comics?

Re: The Book of Solovar - Design Phase
Oh, I know all that - certainly true - but it's like calling Batman an "Avenger" or Magneto a "Criminal" or Doctor Doom a "Scientist." All technically accurate, but none of these classes really capture what the character IS.
Solovar is more commonly associated with Kings than he is Telepaths. The only difference in this case is the mechanical benefits of his being a Telepath. It's not wrong to call him that, it's perfectly sound and probably a benefit, and I won't, like, have an aneurysm if that's what we go with, but it just feels weird not to call a King a King. I mean, Aquaman is a Telepath, too. But it's not his class. JOHNNY139'S CLASSIC CUSTOM THREAD! | Visit now!

Re: The Book of Solovar - Design Phase
Scapemage (and all public LDs), the first thing you need to do when you start a new design is post a link in the C3G Promotions thread and the Welcome to C3G thread. Any public LD needs to adhere to this rule, most of the Heroes (myself included) don't browse the forum looking for new threads and only check our User CP due to having so many threads to keep up with. I only found this because I knew you should be posting it soon.
I'd like to base Solovar's inspiration more on Spartacus' Gladiator Inspiration: If all Order Markers for a round are placed on Gladiator Army Cards, and at least one Order Marker is placed on Spartacus, then all Gladiators you control (except Spartacus) become inspired. Inspired Gladiators add one to their Move number and add 1 extra attack die and defense die for the rest of the round. Something more along the lines of this for Solovar: If all Order Markers for a round are placed on Simian Army Cards, and at least one Order Marker is placed on Solovar, then all Simians you control (except Solovar) become inspired. Inspired Simians add two to their Move number and add 1 extra defense die for the rest of the round or until Solovar receives one or more wounds. I definitely feel that inspired Simians should get a movement boost. |

Re: The Book of Solovar - Design Phase
Since Solovar won the last vote, I too have been searching for better images of him. Like you, I've had little luck. Besides the U.N. picture, this is the best I could find:
Spoiler Alert!
However, in the past Grodd was drawn with white sideburns like so:
Spoiler Alert!
Perhaps someone will stumble across a better image of Grodd that could pass as Solovar? In my attempts I found the following two images that I love (though doubt they are appropriate for army cards):

Re: The Book of Solovar - Design Phase
Sorry to but in this discussion, I couldn't but help to read this thread, and I have a suggestion:
You could make his class be King, but make him have a power that says to consider him as a Telepath when you have Simians on the board that you control. |
