My Own Heroscape Backstory
Quote:
THE RISE OF THE VALKYRIE
Once upon a time in the world of Valhalla there lived a race of noble beings call the Valkyrie. The Valkyrie were nearly immortal in body and were able to live for thousands of years. The Valkyrie were masters of magic and technology, though they used little of each since they prospered without them. Other sentient beings lived on Valhalla also, of these only the Dragons of Icaria rivaled the power of the Valkyrie. These lesser being were very primitive compared to the Valkyrie. Some of the Valkyrie thought that the Valkyrie should rule these lesser beings, but the leader of the Valkyrie, the Archkyrie Migol, forbade the Valkyrie from interfering with the development of these lesser beings. Migol confined the Valkyrie to their homeland of Nastraland so that the other races could be left alone.
Utgar, the oldest of Migol’s five sons, disagreed with his father and thought that the Valkyrie should rule over the other races of Valhalla. Eventually Utgar rebelled against his father, slew him, and declared himself Archkyrie. At first the only one to challenge Utgar’s claim was his brother Jandar. Jandar attempted to reason with his brother to get him to atone for his sins, but when that did not work Jandar gathered his father’s loyal guards to block Utgar’s installation. Utgar lead his minions against Jandar and his sentinels for control of the throne.
Soon two more sons’ of Migol, the twins Ullar and Einar, joined the fight. Ullar backed Jandar and Einar backed Utgar. Neither was happy with Utgar for killing their father, but Einar believed that the law dictated Utgar should be the new Archkyrie. Migol’s youngest son, Vydar, mostly stayed out of the war but did assist one side or the other on occasion.
The war raged for decades and soon spilled out of Nastraland to other regions of Valhalla. Dragons entered the war on both sides. Forced out of Nastraland, Utgar took up residence in the volcanic region known as the Volcarren Wasteland. He subjugated the inhabitants of that land (the Moltarn) and their King Brunak. Even though they were weakened outside of their volcanic homeland, Utgar’s Obsidian Guards (as he called the Moltarn) formed a powerful army to defend Utgar’s lair. By tapping the technology forbidden to him by his father Utgar created a race of sentient artificial life-forms called Soulborgs and began to develop super-weapons to destroy Jandar and his forces.
Jandar was reluctant to invade the Volcarren Wasteland fearing the death toll would be too high, but upon hearing about Utgar’s super-weapons project Jandar gathered all of his forces together for one final strike to end the war. During the Final Battle (as it became known later) when Utgar feared defeat he released his super-weapons on the battlefield devastating both armies. Ninety-nine percent of the combatants were annihilated within seconds.
After the battle the war was over with no winner. The Valkyrie and Dragon races were near extinction, but the five brothers survived. Utgar returned to his lair in the Volcarren Wasteland to plan his return to power. Wanting to obey his father’s wishes, Jandar, now the new Archkyrie, returned with the majority of the remaining Valkyrie to their homeland of Nastraland. A few of the remaining Valkyrie went to live among the lesser races to guide their development (and in some cases dominate them). The Valkyrie were now seen as Gods and feared by some of the lesser races that witnessed the destruction of the Great War. Ullar went to live with the Elves in Feyland Forest to the east of Nastraland. Vydar and Einar both went into seclusion in different parts of Valhalla.
During the next thousand years the lesser races (particularly the Elves, Marro, and Primadons) began to develop their own civilizations. Some of Utgar’s weapon technology was discovered and adopted by these races. Only a few Marro were intelligent enough to use this technology, but they put their new plasma blasters to good use against their less evolved rivals (a species of huge snakes known as Vipers) on the island of Marr. The Primadons learned about cybernetic enhancements from the Soulborgs, and Ullar taught the Elves to use advanced materials to make better weapons such as stronger and sharper swords and exploding arrows. The Elves were not particularly fond of the technology, but the constant incursions by the Anubian Wolves and Grut Orcs into their homeland made such uses of technology necessary.
Recently waters that contain powerful magic were discovered around Valhalla. When news of these Wellsprings reached Utgar he immediately began gathering an army gain control of them. He knew that these Wellsprings would give him the power to gain control of Nastraland the rest of Valhalla. In addition to the Valkyrie that had remained loyal to him, Utgar gathered a huge army of Marro and Orcs. He sent out his lieutenants, Taelord the Valkyrie, Su-Bak-Na the Marro Hivelord, and Grimnak the Orc King, to capture as many wellsprings as they could.
Meanwhile Jandar’s Sentinels lead by his Valkyrie commanders Concan and Raelin apposed Utgar at ever turn. Soon after Jandar had gained control of some of these Wellsprings he began to receive visions of great battles being fought throughout time on another world. Jandar also received the insight that these Wellsprings were connected to that world (known as Earth by its dominate race of humans) and whoever control Valhalla would also be able to control Earth. These Wellsprings also gave him the power to summon warriors from Earth moments before they died in battle. Jandar was reluctant to draw these warriors into another war, but both worlds depended on Utgar’s defeat to survive. Hence, Jandar began summoning the most valiant of warriors from Earth to bolster his armies. A race of Soulborgs known as the Omnicrons and the Dragon Nilfheim also joined Jandar’s army.
The other sons of Migol also began to capture wellsprings and gather armies for the coming war. Ullar summon a few humans to his cause, but the bulk of his army consisted of Elves and Vipers (the snakes from Marr). The Dragon Charos also joined Ullar. Like Jandar, Einar and Vydar both relied heavily on humans to fill their armies. In addition Vydar gained the allegiance of the Primadons, few groups of Soulborg, and the dragon Braxas. As in the previous war, Ullar and Jandar have formed an alliance. Einar’s and Vydar’s ultimate loyalties are still unknown. Einar has an uneasy partnership with Utgar (but does not trust him after the Last Battle) and Vydar again seems to be on no one’s side but his own.
The Second Great War of Valhalla has just begun . . .
