Re: X-Wing
I feel your pain Porkins, but I can assure you, even at MSRP, games stores aren't making much. I am not in it for the money, as luckily I am blessed with a comfortable day job, but I would like it to be around for the local kids to have a safe place to come and get together to play games. The only way for that to be a reality is people buying games in the store. Right now it is Magic, Force of Will, Yu-Go-Blow(not a fan if you couldn't tell), and other card games that sustain stores. Your example is akin to Walmart or Amazon crushing little stores out of business. That is fine, I guess, if you don't like visiting those little stores. You don't really need them. But gaming is different. It will kill the gaming industry when there are no places left to go play. Hopefully this change will help enough to allow LGS a chance to grow, instead of just hang on.

Re: X-Wing
You are correct, that having nowhere to play will kill games like Magic, etc. but it won't kill the gaming industry. I don't play games at game stores, I play them at home with family and friends. I know the (over??)priced copy of M&M was part of the whole distribution situation, and not necessarily the store's fault, but it still irritated me.

Re: X-Wing
That may be true, but there are always quite a few at the game store on board game night that don't have family to play with and are, shall we say, awkward. There only chance to play is at the store. I am glad we are there for that segment of the community.
I get you being irritated. We are irritated that everyone has gotten used to paying prices like they were game stores buying from distributors. We have some regulars who get it and we have tried to bend where we can, but this change by some of the game companies is welcome. The answer seems to be somewhere in the middle, as usual. |

Re: X-Wing
Maybe I'm misreading this part or maybe it lacks the "rest of the story", but this makes it sound like online sales will disappear under these new business rules.

Re: X-Wing
From other discussions I've seen about this, it's not about stopping online sales. But there was something about stopping online places that also have a storefront. Though I think there are some exceptions, perhaps like MM and CSI. But I think they want to try to affect the secondary sellers like on Amazon, or like a local game store double dipping by having an online presence undercutting their own in store prices or that of other nearby game stores.
Not everyone has a game store near them. So if Asmodee were to keep their stuff (FFG, Days of Wonder etc.) from being sold online, they would be cutting their own throat. It would eliminate customers who's only means of buying is online, but also **** off other people enough to boycott their products even if they had a game store nearby. Re: X-Wing
Well, I for one am casual-competitive in nature, and for some games like Heroscape and X-Wing, I play more and have more fun at tournaments, meeting people and testing my skill against other people. I try to buy most of my X-Wing from the stores I play at, in part to show my appreciation for being able to play there and to help the store out.

Re: X-Wing
I buy 90% of my stuff from FLGS. Partly to help the store since I play there, and partly because a membership and cash gets you 35% off.

Re: X-Wing
Well, went to the Winter Tournament at the FLGS. Had a blast, as always, and continued my tradition of always playing something new (be it a ship or pilot, or even an upgrade I haven't used much before). I flew:
Omnicron Group Pilot (shuttle) with Intelligence Agent/Mangler Cannon/ Agent Callus Academy Pilot (TIE Fighter) X 3 "Howlrunner" (TIE Fighter) "Youngster" (TIE Fighter) with Marksmanship Now I know I could've play a more competitive build, but I ran what I ran for 2 reasons. One reason is listed above, to try something new. (Agent Callus is pretty cool, btw). But the main reason I played a "fun" list is that my youngest son played his first X-Wing tournament yesterday! He's a gamer through and through, and at 9 yrs old, held his own fairly well. I was so proud, but also didn't want to squash his dreams by meta gaming his build. He took what he wanted to play, and I felt I should do the same. We missed out on the Darth Vader alt art card, but I got top 4 and the nifty acrylic extra munitions tokens and the bag they come with. (He wanted to play our alt-art cards, so he took Han Solo and Luke Skywalker - no upgrades other than crew or droids - and a green squadron pilot. He did okay. He ended the day 2-2 and was the only rebel player. Again, so proud of him). Just had to share. "Chewie should move 6, lumbering or not. He's got long-ass legs"-

Re: X-Wing
So I finally got to play my first games of X-Wing after my Force Awakens Core Set arrived.
Man, what a blast! Played three games with my two friends, 1-on-1, and watched them play a couple games too. I won all three of the games I was involved in, two as the T-70 and one as the two TIEs. I love the mobility and utility that the Tallon Roll of the T-70 brings to the table. I used to it to great effect, pretty sure I am going to grab another T-70 or maybe even two when I can. I can't wait for the rest of my stuff to arrive in the next 2 weeks. I got Rebel Aces, Imperial Aces, Y-Wing, T-65 X-Wing, E-Wing, TIE Interceptor, TIE Advanced, TIE Phantom, and TIE Bomber coming in. |

Re: X-Wing
I've played 5 games with the Force Awakens set, 3 of which were just the Tutorial mode. The X-Wing has won just one of them.
Although my new stuff won't arrive until Saturday, I don't see anything keeping me from playing 3 players with 1 player per ship. One odd thing about the rules; they specify that teammates can talk strategy, but they have to do so in front of the other team. I don't understand why that rule exists. I might ignore it for casual play.
