One of the non-comic readers in the room actually knew her...I had to go look it up, and then decided no....too obscure. Would probably be a fun one though.

Necroblade, it's because of not being big comic book fan.

Most of those names are awesomely familiar to any Marvel comics fan.

And he's a bit obscure, but I'd LOOOOVE a MODOK.

But the challenge was to name 50 names more recognizable to kids...so now someone find me 50 kids who know every single one of those characters.

...who? Admittedly I'm not a big comic book fan, but I've barely heard of half of these and half the rest I've only heard brief mention of their names.
Wow.

I'm really shocked by that as you seem like the pop-culture savvy type.

Do you enjoy Marvel movies? Of the 97 characters I mention above, around 40-50 have appeared in live-action movies in some form, with more on the way over the next year or two. Of the remaining, most have appeared in the cartoons and/or the video games. Very few are comics-exclusive.

Even as a casual comic fan I know that many, many characters on this list have had their own comic book series, so even if you are a casual comics fan or a non-fan, these guys are pretty prominent in their medium and therefore often breakout of the boundaries of the paneled page when it comes time for licensing.

I think every character on my list (except perhaps Peter Porker) has had his own action figure in the extremely popular Marvel Legends toyline. If you're around kids a lot, you'll know that those Marvel Legends toys are getting pretty omnipresent. Seems like every kid I know under age 12 has at least one or two, and sometimes the characters are shockingly obscure (moreso than anything on my list!). Heck I saw a kid with Yellow Jacket and Sasquatch figures while playing with my cousins. I had to ask him who they were because I wasn't sure. Also, video games often play a big part in boosting a characters name cred...that Ultimate Alliance game really upped the status of some characters by making them playable in a major platform game release.

The fact that you have heard their names is good enough....even if you can put even a little bit of an image to that name, or at least know that a certain name = Marvel superhero, you're set. The name carries recognition...it's not total obscurity. Plus, even if you do draw a total blank on some of these guys, I think a lot of Marvel fans will back me up that there are some veery cool looking figures here with interesting powers....that can increase the desire to buy as well. When dealing with secondary and tertiary characters, I tried not to list ones that didn't look cool or have something really crazy in power town.

I think that DC cannot boast as many name characters as Marvel, even though it's big two (Sups and Bats) are, with Spider-Man, arguably the most iconic comic characters ever. Perhaps in a future post I'll try.

The BlackPanther has been featured in cartoons and video games and action figures. He is also a staple of the Marvel U, so not including him would alienate fans.

MODOK is more obscure, I admit, but he has also been featured in other mediums. He's also a giant frickin' head....which ups his "awesome wackiness" appeal.

edit: Oh yeah....if the challenge was to name fifty, and you recognize half the names on my list, that just about does it.

A kid who doesn't like comics, super-heroes, etc won't know who the Black Panther is. That same kid, odds are, won't be buying Marvelscape, and won't know anyone outside of Spider-Man and Friends. If a kid likes comics and such, he'll probably know most of the characters on that list in some way, shape, or form.

EDIT: Oh, and MODOK was in the Iron Man cartoon in the 90s.

Agreed, sorta.

I thik there's a difference between not liking something and not being exposed to it. As a kid I didn't like Voltron, didn't own any of the toys, and watched it only once or twice, but I guarantee at the time I could have named virtually every character on the show and told you what they did. Likewise for Strawberry Shortcake, even though that was a girl's toy....I had girl cousins that were obsessed with her. Just being a kid and playing with other kids you play with their toys and/or hear about their interests, you watch the same cartoons and movies sometimes, you get in those fun kid discussions of what character can beat up what other character. If even one kid on the playground has seen the popular Avengers cartoon and knows who Black Panther is, soon enough two kids will, then four, then eight, and so on.

The popularity of Heroclix is also boosting the recognition of more obscure characters, and as the previous poster added via edit, cartoons feature the obscurities.

edit: I'd also like to add that if Marvel Legends action figures can sell obscure characters, Herocape can definately do it. Reason being Heroscape has the Heroscape name, obviously, and has the advantage of selling you four or five figures at a time, something that lessens the impact of a third-stringer. If Marvel Legends can sell someone a Baron Zemo for 10 bucks and make a profit on it at big box retail (and it seems they are doing quite well with that), I guarantee Hasbro can put a Baron Zemo in a pack with other figures and sell it for ten bucks, especially if even one or two of those figures have appeared in a movie or cartoon or other notable source.

And here I was about to say I agree with every single thing you've been saying in this thread so far.
You're probably even right when it comes to the whole Marvel/DC thing as well, though. Marvel has certainly done a much better job of marketing its secondary characters in mass media, and probably has a few more big name characters to start out with (Stan Lee really made an impact on pop culture).
That said, DC's cast of characters is nothing to sneeze at. Let's see if I can't bust out a comparable list to what you did for Marvel.
Thanks to Smallville, various television cartoons (BTAS standing out in this group), and several movies of varying quality, Batman and Superman both have fairly recognizable universes of characters.

1. Superman
2. Lex Luthor
3. Doomsday
4. General Zod
5. Metallo
6. Bizarro
7. Supergirl
8. Superboy
9. Batman
10. Joker
11. Robin
12. Batgirl
13. Nightwing
14. Penguin
15. Catwoman
16. Riddler
17. Two Face
18. Ra's Al Ghul
19. Scarecrow
20. Poison Ivy
21. Mr. Freeze
22. Bane
23. Clayface
24. Wonder Woman
25. Cheetah
26. Green Lantern (several versions)
27. Flash (several versions)
28. Martian Manhunter
29. Hawkgirl
30. Raven
31. Beast Boy
32. Cyborg
33. Starfire
34. Deathstroke
35. Aquaman
36. Green Arrow
37. The Atom
38. Plastic Man
39. Hawkman
40. Captain Marvel (Shazam)
41. Darkseid
42. Power Girl
43. The Spectre
44. Brainiac
45. Captain Atom
And I feel, at this point, I'm starting to trail off into much lesser known characters, though I could still list about 200 characters I know off the top of my head here. But, yeah, I'd say you're right, DC is a bit less iconic (though it's hard for me to judge, being such a big DC fan myself - heck, I could probably list 150 or more just Batman related characters).

C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.
