Wow.
Just...I...Wow They...Wow. I can't wait to try these guys out. The Goblin synergy is such a great idea. EXPENDABLE RABBLE and SCURRY should work very interestingly together. The sculpts do look amazing. Nicely done, team. And thanks for the preview. ~Spite |

Re: Horned Skull Brutes Pre-Release Discussion Thread
These guys can also help out units that don't like to start their turns engaged.
If properly set up, you could alternate order markers between Mika Connour and the Brutes to allow her the chance to shadow ambush every other turn. They could also help the wolves of badru with pounce. |

Re: Horned Skull Brutes Pre-Release Discussion Thread
This is especially true in a team game. Your WoB pounces, your teammate's Brutes bail out the wolves before your next turn. Pounce and repeat.

Re: Horned Skull Brutes Pre-Release Discussion Thread
My first thought when I saw the card, before I had read any of the powers, was "so much for the Gladiators". For 5 points more, I get 4/4 squaddies that don't need Spartacus. Granted, I lose the bonding activation, but which would you rather have: 9 Capuans with Spartacus and Crixus, or 18 HSBs with 50 points left over? Yeah, that's what I thought.
After I had read the powers, my next thought was, "man, these guys would be amazing if there weren't startzone restrictions". The issue will be getting enough of both squad in tat 24 hex startzone. I think I'm more partial to the HSBx2, Cutterx4 approach. The reason is that the cutters are already pretty competitive in my opinion. In this configuration, the HSBs are more of a bonus. As MM said, OM management can get tricky, but Barge into Battle gives you the ability to cover a lot of ground in those first activations, assuming the cutters have already moved up. The multiple ranged special attackers are an issue, of course. |

I actually like these units now that I think about them more. 4/4 is nice even for a three squad unit, especially at 75. I guess I need to get some Goblins while I still can then. These guys are great! I agree that the hunched sculpt is not my favorite but that is minor quibble due to their cool abilities and synergy with the other Gobbos!! Can't wait to field the two units together.

Re: Horned Skull Brutes Pre-Release Discussion Thread
Love 2 of the 3 sculps (but I could see myself growing a soft spot for ol' humpy).
Great card. Very competitive stats. 4/4! Great specials and interplay with Cutters is both thematic and interesting to play (theoretically, of course). A GREAT unit. Awesome job, design team! As pointed out by Matthias and KC, OM managment will be the key. Probably a very strong army in the hands of sound players. Will they be the new Glads N Blasts? |

Re: Horned Skull Brutes Pre-Release Discussion Thread
I was really hoping the hunched guy wouldn't be in the squad when we were looking at the D&D figures but with the repaint and alongside the other two he actually looks really good. I'm very pleasantly surprised. I think they did a great job of choosing sculpts that look good and fit well together. I'm also really looking forward to teaming these guys up with the cutters. My only reservation is that I wish the word "bugbear" was somewhere on the card - if not as race then maybe in the unit's name (Horned Skull Bugbears instead of Horned Skull Brutes, for example). As it is now there's nothing other than how they look to indicate that they are bugbears.
I also like how units are being designed so that the powers kind of steer you toward playing them in-character in order to get the most out of them. It's very fun and a real mark of good game design! |
