Lava Rock :D

My lava rock.

Heres how to make it. First you buy one red and one black small tubs of play-doh.

Then shape the black play-doh like a rock.

Next stick it on a tile.

Then get a small red piece.

Place it on there then your done!

What do you think?

Personally, I've found you can get a more permanent look using epoxy putty or Super Sculpty. The epoxy putty will air-dry, the SS you need to bake.

Both will take paints pretty well with a primer and will hold more detail then the play-doh which tends to crack and become very brittle when it drys.

Re: Lava Rock :D

Definitely keep all of the stuff in one thread.

And Play dough will shrink something awful. I used it to make a number of different things for Hero Quest back in the day {as my kids say "before they had real TV} and they all shrunk up. If cost is a problem use the different to get the basic shape before you work in the more expensive clay. Or, you can shape it put it to the side for about a week. See if it is still in a cool shape. Then Paint it. Trust me you can come up with much cooler colors for the lava. Any Walmart has the paints in the craft section for about a buck a bottle.

For brushes to save a few bucks, look in the makeup section for makeup brushes. You can often get a set, especially after christmas, on the cheap.

You can change the name by going to Edit your post and then Go advanced. If you want to change it when you add something new.

Re: Lava Rock :D

Ummm wow....no. My advide would be to buys some Super Sculpy clay and make them out of that since Play-Doh does not last. Or go out side and look around a lot of people use "lava looking" style rocks in their driveway.

Re: Lava Rock :D

If you are looking for an inexpensive material that is similar to play-doh, you might want to try Crayola Model Magic. it comes in a variety of colors and you can get finer detail into it. It will air dry with the consistency of a stale marshmallow.

I've actually made some costumes out of it, with another substance as a base like rigid wrap (made a Slave Leia costume this way). Since you have the hex bases it should hold pretty well and you can just buy a red pack and a black pack for about $8.00, if painting isn't your thing.

Re: Lava Rock :D

Keep making things, but listen to what people here say. They want to help, and some of them may have gone through the same thing. I posted some stuff I made, and one item was 2 plastic bottle caps glued together and painted black. Those caps I made didn't look good and some people let me know that. Later I made other items, and each time I put a little more detail into them, and used some ideas from other threads. These things people liked.

I guess what I'm saying is keep at it, we may see something you made on the home page someday.

Keep working at it to get the look you're looking for. If you want something a little more profession looking if you're willing to spend a little money (maybe 10 - 20 bucks?), I'd encourage you to get some modeling clay, etc. You can get it at Michael's, Hobby Lobby or maybe even Walmart.

Or if you want to try a different way, go the styrofoam way with Mod Podge so you can carve the rock shape exactly how you want it. Just some ideas.

Re: Lava Rock :D

If it works for you, then do it.
I just suggest you try to get some Crayola Model Magic or some kind of bakable clay, like other posters said.

Or, Like Cartman said, look around for "Lava Rocks" then I'd suggest getting red paint, and either lightly brushing it, or watering it down and get it in the holes of the rock.
