Heroscape School Club
I teach English at a high school in North Carolina. I bought the first master set hoping to get a few kids interested in playing during lunch. It worked! Our lunch is about one hour long, so I have a core group of 4-5 kids who come by every day during lunch to play. One brought in his first master set to add to mine. Two of them pitched in to buy the second master set and the Romans. I bought three of the small expansion sets from BS and the castle.
We have two computer tables set up with hexes, figures, and cards everywhere! We build our own boards and scenarios. It's also large enough to have four armies going at once. Sometimes we play teams; sometimes we play three armies against one who rules the castle. We play more capture-the-flag games than anything. We also vary things like playing games with only heroes or only squads. Just thought the HS fanatics would appreciate my molding the youth away from video games to a game with people whom you can actually befriend. Sorry for the long email and the new post. Lerxst |

Re: Heroscape School Club
Nope. I'm also the wrestling coach (English, wrestling, HS--big geek at heart), so nobody picks on them or me. They and I don't care anyway. We're having fun, and many kids have come by to watch what's going on. More HS.

Re: Heroscape School Club
Congratulations, Lerxst, it's great to hear that you have been able to get such an enthusiastic group together. Now if only you could get OTHER schools to do it. Does anyone see the nationwide High School heroscape tournaments in the future? Perhaps Obama will support it.
But I have to say... GEEK ALERT! You should recommend they go to graduate school. Among graduate students it's possible to both play Heroscape and be cool. |

Re: Heroscape School Club
I work for an after school (K-6) program.
Toward the end of last year, I brought in some of my HS stuff on a lark, just to see what would happen. The kids LOVED IT! The boys loved the game and the theme and everything. They each quickly developed their own favorites. One boy plays Krug, Arrow Gruts, and Swogs every time. One likes the Marro. One is a huge fan of the Dwarves and Axegrinders currently. I don't think I've seen any other activity hold the attention of these 8-11 year old boys longer or more powerfully than Heroscape does. They still refuse to learn to use Order Markers or glyphs though, even though they're using all of the other master rules. Many of the younger kids like it too. They like the pieces and building maps. Some of them think the Wolves of Badru look like puppies and like to just have them play in the snow. Whenever I've brought my stuff, they ask for me to bring it back the next day. I got a SotM master set, and one of the Castle sets I won in a tournament to just stay at the school for them to always have access to it in the afternoons so I don't have to lug my stuff over there every day. I've been thinking of going back to school to get my teaching certification, and I could definitely see myself starting a club such as the one your describe, or even using it in the classroom to help teach probability or something. Some more serious 'gamers' out there dismiss HS as a kid's game, but you certainly cannot deny the appeal of this game to the youth. But it's fun for old farts too, much more so than most games out there. Last edited by Jexik; September 10th, 2009 at 09:42 AM. |

Re: Heroscape School Club
I'm going to school right now for my teaching degree (High School Social Studies, so I'm aloud to be a geek :thumbs up and I have been tossing the idea back and forth about trying to start up a Heroscape Club or something after I'm settled in a school.

Re: Heroscape School Club
There is no reason why you couldn't get that started in your school. Just start asking someone with the authority to do so.

Re: Heroscape School Club
Start by taking to a favorite and willing teacher who could supervise and enlist their help in getting it started. Of course, you may also want to make sure that there would be interest in such a group/club.

Re: Heroscape School Club
I teach English IV (Seniors) and a Shakespeare class. I'll try to post some pics of boards we've made soon. I agree with Ninja. Just go talk to a teacher. If he/she isn't interested, go to the next one and beg. The biggest problem might be space or storing things.

Re: Heroscape School Club
I wish I could play HS at my school but no one else plays.
Helm in hand, fist in the air, the knight screams of victory. |
