Could free Unity be used to make an HS Online environment?

Some time ago, I posted about using SketchUp as a surrogate for HS Online in Google Docs.

The user environment in SketchUp would need to be limited for it to really be useful for someone who doesn't use it every day.

I was just wondering if Unity could work? I'm toying with using for the Architectural Presentations. HS would be a pleasant spin off.

The thing is, Google Docs has demonstrated that you don't need a game engine to play online. You just need an environment where you can move the figures around. All of the dice rolling, rules, etc, are taken care of otherwise.

All that is needed is an environment where it's easy to grab a model and move it to a new hex. For me, in SketchUp, that's easy, but I use it all of the time for work.

Anyone know if Unity free version would be something where you could do this.

I started the Unity tutorials for something else, and I'll be honest, I'm a visual person, and when they got to C# scripting my eyes glazed over.

The modelling is my cup of tea. The scripting, not so much.

Re: Could free Unity be used to make an HS Online environmen

I don't know if I am being a necro on this, but nobody replied so here goes...

1. You said you don't like scripting. That is not good. At all. 99% of everything you will do on Unity will require 150 lines of code... haha.... I have ALOT of previous programming knowledge, and let me tell you, even I have alot of learning to do. This is not really for anybody with little or no experience. If you know javascript or csript, give it a shot though. Knowing both would be best.

2. Creating a full game in Unity can take a long time. You would have to be willing to commit many weeks probably. And then another few weeks for bug fixing. And then a few more for modeling. But I am horrible at modeling so maybe that is just me :P .And that is if you don't have to spend 2 months figuring out the engine haha.

Overall, I would say this: If you really want to get into this, watch tutorials, read script examples. Study study and study the programming language then study it some more. Also, the asset store can be a good place to start, as much of the content there is free. Then start with a VERY simple project... sayyy.... 2D checkers. Then work your way up.

P.S. The number one reason people quit Unity is because they started too big. If you find a particular project hard, try something simpler. Good luck!

Yes, Unity is easily capable of such a task. However, isn't a magic bullet, and it would still take a lot of work to make it happen.

Finding toolkits isn't our problem.

Agreed. One does not simply create Heroscape.
