Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Quote:
Game 1 I didn't remember much about the game (my previous game was a 4 player) but I didn't want to hear all the rules or think about how everything interacted so he just briefly refreshed my memory so we could get to it. This game was just the 2 of us. I started off using Poseidon and my brother took Aries. Not too long after he used Aries to take my island that had a seaport and it was an uphill struggle for the rest of the game for me until I finally lost. Game 2 After arguing about the fact that I was better at the game and just didn't know how to play we started another one. Again just the 2 of us. I took a monopoly on Zeus in this game and the only time my brother got him I stole his priest. After having collected half a dozen priest (whilst my brother had 0), I could basically take whoever I wanted in the bidding, which was usually Zeus. Zeus is doubly effective in a 2 player game since each player gets 2 bidding columns, you get to use your priests twice a turn. So I ended up beating him twice as bad as he had beaten me. I told him I was the better Cyclade. Game 3 A week later we played a 3rd game, this time a friend joined us to make it a 3 player game. My friend had never played before. I took one of my brothers islands the first turn of the game and he remained with just one island until the end of the game, continually using Apollon when he was outbid, to get 4 gold instead of just one, and collecting a lot of cornucopias. I had control of 4 islands from pretty close to the start of the game, and they went unchallenged. I built the first metropolis and my brother built on on his lone island as well, using 4 scholars. In addition to my metropolis I had 2 additional temples, so I had cheap access to the monsters. So after 2.5 hours I had an easy chance to win the game. I had 1 scholar and was going to bid on Athena, collect a 2nd, pay for a 3rd, then use whichever monster that lets you steal a scholar to do so and build my second metropolis. I bid 14, but my brother outbid me knowing that I could win the game if I got her. I forgot about my 3-4 priests, otherwise I'd have bid the extra gold that they'd have knocked off. At least my brother wasted a ton of gold stopping me. So the next round I formulated a new plan and bid 18 on Aries. I won the bid, and used him to buy 3 extra soldiers and to build a fortress. I then used the monster that let me turn my extra temple into a college, giving me all 4 buildings and build my 2nd metropolis. I had already mobilized all of my troops onto one island in a fake out against my friends main island. It was only a fake out, because I thought the game ended as soon as I built my 2nd Metropolis instead of at the end of the round. Ooops, couldn't believe that, and the monster that carried armies was left in play, so I bought it, and used it to travel to my friends island (even though I could have just used my boat, I didn't want anyone else to use it against me and it was my last gold piece) with all 7 of my soldiers, leaving all of my other islands empty. I easily won the island and he couldn't do a whole lot on his turn. My brother, who had Zeus, was the last to go. He used Zeus' power to draw another monster card and got the chimera and went back through the discarded cards and took out the monster that can fly soldiers (sorry can't remember all the monsters, it's the Theracus monster) and flew his one guy to my empty island with a metropolis on it to take his second and win the game. So his victory was bittersweet, as we all knew I should have won, but due to being stupid and not realizing the end game conditions I unwittingly left myself open. Midway through my final turn my brother and friend said that I could go back and re-do it since I hadn't realized what I was doing, but I just let it be. I could have just left all of my troops alone, nobody could have challenged them anyway. What made it worse was after the game we noticed that I was supposed to be collecting 9 gold at the start of my turns instead of the 8 that I had been. If I'd have had 1 extra gold, I could have used my boat to take over my friends island, then the Theracus monster to fly to my brothers and defeat his 1 soldier and claimed a 3rd metropolis and nobody would have been able to do anything about it! |

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Sparkle: Thanks for the narration of your Cyclades games. It just goes to show that you have to play even a simple game a few times to get it down! Now the question from your comments is, does three cities beat two? The rules don't say "the most cities," but that amount of gold beats ties of two each. So how should we play it? Hmmm...

Also, Sparkle, in a 2 player game each Priest only lets you decrease one offering by one GP. So if you have 6 Priests, you can still only save 6 gold per turn, not a whole 12. Oh, and now that I'm checking, both of these questions are answered in the FAQ. (Points number 1 + 7 for these situations) |

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
The creature you are describing is called a griffin.
Theracus' species is technically not a griffin, but the figure you are describing that looks like him is a griffin. |

Griffin is eagle/lion. Hippogriffin/Gryphon is a eagle/horse. Theracus is a hippogriffin, though for some reason got another species name. Probably due to how the body plan was different to other gryphon's... |

Re: What Board Game Are You Currently Playing?
Day one of TotalCon is in the books (day two just starting).
Yesterday I played: GOSU (I looooove this game, but only get to play when I'm at a Con ) Dominant Species (another great game, but reeeealy long. took 3 hours, and that is considered short) Quarriors x3 (filler while waiting for our BSG game) Battlestar Galactica (I am a cylon, and I suck at it) Panic Station (this one gets a 'meh' from me. basically BSG in an hour, but was still kind of meh) -insert signature here- |
