Gen Con 2010 Main Event Armies

Stingers x7 - 420
Raelin - 500, 22 hexes

600 - Kumiko + Marcu / Krav (sit a Stinger) / Gurei-Oni (Evil Eye and a Special Attack, fits the hexes )
620 - Kaemon Awa
640 - Kaemon + Marcu

A Shield/Symbol is completely sick for that army.

Nilfheim - 185
Raelin - 265
10th x3 - 490, 15 hexes

600 - Airborne Elite / 10th + Fire Elemental / Krav + Isamu
620 - 10th + Marro Warriors / Kaemon or Hydra + Isamu
640 - 10th x2

I left Isamu off of that build since you get 10th x2 on a symbol then, but he could probably go in there Day 1. You still get Krav/Kaemon or Hydra on Skull/Shield, and you can get Phantoms x2 on a symbol.

I'm guessing Rÿchean chose this point total because it's bad for Mass and Trons, which is cool. The only Mass armies I can really come up with are gimmicky. Something like Q10/Mimring + Mass x5 with valiant hero reinforcements (or even Deathwalker 7000 ).

The problem with this team is that there's exactly 24 hexes.

The Stinging Swords

(can you have more than 24 hexes on day 2? This team can't get any more cards on day 2 if it's still 24 limit)

This one, although less effective, has less hexes and is less expensive (money-wise)

I like Gruts and Agents, or a similar army with Dwarves/Mogrimm. I was really keen on 4x Greenscales, Nilfheim, Raelin, but now I'm not so sure. The army I took to Rochester a year or two ago seems neat too: 4x Stingers, Raelin, Zelrig, or maybe 3x Dwarves, Migol, Zelrig.

Since Trons are maybe more unlikely than even last year, Cyprien might be a good play.

Those aren't the best additions.

I'm not so sure I like the orc / agent army with only 3 heavies. I'd rather take 4 and filler.

I think 2 x GSW is the max you need. Nilf is still pretty darn good if they go down and you won't run around with 2/3 melee squad. At least that's been my (limited) experience with play-testing the GSW.

I have about 5 or so dwarf armies in the works. I'm still working on the rat problem with them.

Oh and there's one more that fomox and I have in the works.

Yeah, I'm having trouble with Mass armies, too. Of course, there's the Clarissimus angle (Massx4 + Braxas), but your upgrade options (after another squad at 560 points) aren't awesome: 4th+Eldgrim, 4th+Eldgrim+Kyntela (ugh), 4th + Thorgrim/Concan. Still, I think that beats the Massx5 options, which have even less appealing upgrades.

Of course, if you're spider_poison, you can be a super-hero again:

So... pretty good on day 1, assuming my theory that this is a good army is correct. Hoping and praying for 620 on day 2.

One other throught: the Stinger/Zelrig army can be re-worked as a mixed stinger/greenscale/Nilfheim army. At 635... Stingersx4, Greenscalesx2, Raelin, Nilfheim, Isamu? Sounds pretty good to me.

Maybe with Mass, you just go non-valiant and include Raelin in it.

Nah, I make a specific point to not think about such things. We hashed out the reinforcement point totals first; I then decided that I liked how 510 allowed Day 2 to come out 600, 620, 640. Trust me, I wasn't trying to nerf any particular build. I rarely even think about potential armies for any of the events until after we are done setting up the parameters.

I really hate the idea of playing Mass with Krav. Unless I'm really scared that I'm about to lose on time, I'd just leave the last Krav alone, unless it was sitting on a glyph of Astrid. Isamu is even worse. In the current metagame, I just can't justify playing persistently non-valiant 4th Mass when I can have 10th for 5 points more.

I thought about that Mass/Charos/Thorgrim combo, too, but came to the conclusion that it probably doesn't make day 2.

My Braxas rat-podge idea could be easily turned into a Blackroller, to beef up the offense a bit:

It still has a bit of a glass jaw, but the offensive potential of Braxas + 3 attacks of 3 is pretty terrifying.

main problem; squads will tear this up.
I know you have two squad killers with Nilf and "Cyprien" ( who shouldn't be considered a squad killer ) however Nilf can fall pretty quickly without a screen; and the greenscales can fall pretty fast against ranged fire power...

Not enough figures in my opinion; orcs; Dwarves; knights; can pull a win off against this army. My rule of thumb is to only have one big point figure / combo (example - Cyprien and Sonya)

I hope you notice that Zetacron+Sonya=105. That's 605 points.
