I'll be there. I have room in my car for one other player. I'll be leaving very early in the AM from Pacifica.

What the heck is the Glyph of Holdir?

With the Caustic Spray trap, can you select an opponent's figure for the overspray?

Re: Valley War II: Bidding War; Modesto, CA, July '12

This sounds like a very fun idea. However, I'd like to point out that "minimizing the use of isamu" means "maximizing the use of otonashi", doesn't it? "if there’s another cheerleader or filler you can use, USE IT!" - that means we can never use isamu, since otonashi is another filler with the same value.

Also, 25 points means dumutef's, rather than marcu. Great idea, we need to see more of those guys on the field.

TL;DR: I put a lot of thought into my posts. Please read them before responding, even if they seem long. I try to make my posts useful and worth the time.

If Isamu makes sense thematically I won't axe him, but generally, yeah, I expect to see a lot more Otonashi (or, hopefully, a lot fewer armies that are effectively built 10 light).

Re: Valley War II: Bidding War; Modesto, CA, July '12

I always like to consider armies that have the potential of throwing your opponent's strategy into chaos. So,

First Army Idea:

Su-Bak-Na 160
Kee-Mo-Shi 130
Ne-Gok-Sa 90
2 x Marro Stingers 120
Otonashi 10

510/11

Otonashi fits pretty good in this army 'cause all the heroes are Tricky.

Second Army Idea:

Omegacron 180
2 x Omnicron Snipers 200
2 x Omnicron Repulsors 80
Marro Warriors 50
510/18

MW are mostly for glyph holding.

Here is a link to six pages of army ideas from 2009 at this price point.

Here's an army idea from Jexik taken from that thread:

Red Wings of Death
3x Minions 330
Zelrig 185
515/11

Re: Valley War II: Bidding War; Modesto, CA, July '12

I have two main questions.

1) Why do these meet ups seem to get more and more complicated in format?

2) I was under the impression that Ronin Games and Gamekastle are the two most central game stores for "this group," so why Modesto?

I'm asking these questions, because I would really like to play more 'Scape. I originally invested in a few sets to play with my daughter. I then found this site and you guys. So, I figured that I should start buying up costly sets in order to make at least semi-competitive armies to play with all of you. Yet, I feel less and less like I will be able to actually play this game with anyone.

I wonder, will games keep moving further from my area and continue to get more complicated and "regulated?" Will I not only have to chase down seemingly necessary OOP figures AND models for custom 'Scape in order to keep up? Should I just sell the majority of what I have now?

Sorry for asking all of this here and now, but I don't know when or where else to put it. I feel a little overwhelmed by it all. Does anyone here have any input? Thanks in advance.

Re: Valley War II: Bidding War; Modesto, CA, July '12

The Valley War was started last year as a sort of 'outside our normal area' tournament in order to have a tournament that the Central Valley folks could (at least once a year) participate in. Our normal tournament venue is the Bay Area.

I don't know about all the other folks in "this group", but, for tournament purposes I can pretty much loan you anything you might want to play with. So don't feel that you need to own everything you play in a tournament. Play with proxies to decide if the units are indeed what you want to use, and I (and some other folks) can loan you the actual units for the tournament.

As to the "out there" nature of recent tournaments, that's really a result of the fevered brains of those few of us who take the time and energy required to host/run the tournaments. Pipe up and say "I want to run the next tournament!", and you can make it any format you want. I even (kinda) posed that question after this last tournament, asking if the next tournament was going to be straight-up, blind 500-point tournament. I was roundly pshaw-ed (but that may just have been Killo being Killo).

A lot of us have been playing a long time and have all these ideas, "Oh! Wouldn't it be cool if...". And, after thinking it through for a bit and tossing the obvious loser ideas, we work out how it could work as a tournament and then say "Me! Me! I wan't to try my idea!," and see where we can fit it in the current tournament schedule.

We used to have a tournament every 2 to 3 months, but, since folks are aging and getting jobs and stuff, and we've gotten a couple of monthly get-togethers going in the area, the tournament schedule has slowed down to a tournament every 3 to 4 months. That's not to say that, if you wanted to spearhead a tournament, you couldn't fit one in on a tighter schedule, though.

Re: Valley War II: Bidding War; Modesto, CA, July '12

Yeah, the valley war is a good idea for those people in north bay or the valley, since it's easier for them to get there. I didn't go to last years because I didn't want to travel out there, but I'll probably hit this years, if only because I have the trophy. That said, I'm definitely gonna join the carpool list for it, because I don't know that I really want to make the drive.

As for the ideas, I've really been enjoying them. Some of the other ideas have been pretty cool, too, looking at the older tournaments. I'd love to try an embrace the suck event with c3v and SoV figures, just because that sounded like a pretty nifty idea.

That said, I think we should do at least one event each year that's a more traditional style of play. That doesn't mean that it has to be a 500 point kill-em-all event. I'd even say that this last event was a fairly "traditional" event, in that it was just a themed kill-em-all with some slight restrictions due to the theme. We could go crazy and do something like "DnD/fantasy/historical/sci-fi only", or general wars, or faction wars, or any number of other things, without really leaving what I would call "traditional" event structure. This one is unusual, yes. But it's also, I think, going to be a lot of fun. It's not the most unusual event we've ever done, I don't think, so there's that, too.

As for locations, we hold what, 3-4 tournaments a year? What do you guys think about making sure we have one in each spot each year. 1 Valley war, 1+ events at Ronin, and 1+ events at GK? We started playing at Ronin because it's easier for north bay/central valley people, right? Or am I mistaken on that front? In any case, thoughts are always welcome.

And yeah, as for figures, never feel like you have to own everything. Unless a figure is required by the format (should never happen), someone can always loan you something.

Hmm, actually, now that I think about it, can anyone think of a format that would require a particular figure? I'm thinking "viking rescue - all armies must include one viking figure, who starts in a designated hex in the opponents start zone, with a pit trap glyph. Any figure in a pit trap may not be attacked in any way, nor may that figure attack. The first team to rescue their viking (and move him to their own start zone), or eliminate the opponents army, is the winner." Lose your viking and you have to win by kill-em-all. Eh? Of course, in this case, you need either thorgrim, finn, or eldgrim, and I think we all have at least one of those three figures available. There are probably some issues with this (theracus being the first that comes to mind), but whatever, I'm just typing random things at this point.

Yeah, comments always welcome. Or, if I'm being completely nonsensical, please point it out. I'd hate to sound like a raving looney. Not that it'd be the first time.

TL;DR: I put a lot of thought into my posts. Please read them before responding, even if they seem long. I try to make my posts useful and worth the time.

Re: Valley War II: Bidding War; Modesto, CA, July '12

I hear you on the formats, but I think this keeps it interesting for the veterans. This one sounds like lots of fun, though, except for maybe the "reverse the whip" aspect. I am unfamiliar with too many popular characters to play effectively in these sorts of tournaments.

It sounds to me like you are in luck, though. We have a monthly get together right in your area at GamesKastle that offers a much more casual atmopsphere than the competitions. As much fun as the tournaments are to me, I think I prefer the casual days because I can play with and against armies that I probably wouldn't see in tournaments.

The casual days are every third Saturday at GameKastle. You can follow the BAG - Bay Area Gamers Page Here. That being said, the casual day this Saturday was cancelled due to last week's tournament. They will start up again 5/19. Hope you can make it. [/hijack]
