Utah Monthlies 2017

Great news: True's weekend schedule has shifted and he'll be coming back to Salt Lake Friday night, which means he can make it on Saturday now! So that's another one for game day! Also, we were discussing possible armies he may want to run and one of the builds calls for Marro Dividers x3, the only problem being I don't own any Dividers. Does anyone have a few squads he can borrow? He hasn't decided on it 100% yet (or could just use something else) but I wanted to ask in here just to see if it was feasible.

Unfortunately, Dividers are super hard to come by! However, I know @DeathStryker has a squad, and @CrashMan00 has two squads, so if he/you can get in contact with them, maybe it can be done.

That's another one in the books! It was a great time and a fun format.
Mr. @Leaf_It has asked to run June's monthly, and I'm sure he'll have details for us soon!
In the meantime, I hope to see some battle reports (I'll do my own in a bit!).

THE DEWK'S MAY MONTHLY BATTLE REPORT

I'm not sure why, but this month I had more army ideas and switches than I've had in past months. About a week before the event, I had narrowed it down to Marrden Hounds x2, and then either Stingers x4 + Raelin, or Havech Eradicators x3 + Me-Burg-Sa. In deciding the final build, I realized that either final build had my start zone pretty packed, which is a terrible idea with hounds. So back to the drawing board, and with just a few days before it was to take place, I had finally locked in the following:

x2 Marrden Hounds, Airborne Elite, Cyprien&Sonya, Isamu

It ended up with the name "Go, Dog, Go!", as those Hounds can really hustle. I felt it was a build that could counter and dish out against a lot of things. I just had to pray that I didn't go up against a soulborg-heavy build.

Game 1, Highways and Dieways vs @Leaf_It

Leaf_it was playing Laglor, Warforged x2, x4 53rd North Carolina Sharpshooters , which I thought was awesome. Possibly my favorite melee squad being backed up by Confederates with 11 range? This was gonna be fun.

I failed The Drop, so my OMs went to the hounds - I figured while 11 range is pretty good, that gap can be closed with 8+ move (hounds on road tiles are quick, in case you were wondering). So, Go Dogs Go! Off they went. Leaf_It's start zone was full of boney dogs before anything could be moved out. Dogs poisoned sharpshooters and warforged, warforged poked at dogs.
Round 2 I forgot to roll for the drop But no worries, my dogs still had plenty of life left in them. Leaf_It tried his hand with the map's Dumutef Guards, but the dogs poisoned/bit them (but it wasn't a bad use of an OM, as although my dogs didn't fall to the Dumutefs, they were slowed). By the end of the round, it was pretty even - my dogs were all destroyed, but so were all but one of his Warforged, and a couple of 53rd.

But then, round 3, I rolled the drop and initiative successfully. As the dogs had rushed the startzone, Leaf_It's units were still pretty balled up, so a grenade toss was what I opted to do. I want to say I destroyed 3-4 53rd and wounded Laglor. The ape and his confederates fought back pretty valiantly, but the damage had been done.

Round 4 (I will note that up until this round, initiative had been mine each round) was Cyprien munching on what was left behind.

Luck was on my side in this game - I got initiative 3 of the 4 rounds, my dogs got their full move except for one time, and they rolled a little above average for their plague ability. It was also really nice that Warforged Resolve didn't matter (I believe 5 of the 6 Warforged were destroyed via the plague). Auto-wound ftw.

Game 2, Swamp Helix vs @Saints_Wrath

Saints was playing a fearsome Kyrie build - Raelin, Atlaga, x2 Minions of Utgar, and x1 Sentinels of Jandar. But just as auto-wounds are Warforged Resolve's worst enemy, so are they the worst enemy of expensive Kyrie squads!

Round 1 I missed the drop, so Go, Dogs, Go! Had a hound grab each of the 3 glyphs - clipping the wings of the Kyrie, while giving my hounds 10 move (well, with decent rolls), and keeping Minions of Utgar from the glyph of Astrid was definitely a good use of my first OM. Spent the next few OMs hustling hounds over the castle, trying to keep Minions from gaining any kind of high ground - managed to place one overlooking the start zone, effectively blocking their path. For now.
Round 2 I got the drop! Placing Airborne Elite on double height, now that's the dream. I started with a grenade, but realized that although I was grenading 3-4 units at a time, 8 defense Minions (thanks to Raelin's aura) made it not worth it. It took me two dud grenades to realize this, so I decided to double-height normal attack Raelin until she was destroyed. She was gone after OM 2. The recently-reduced-to-six-defense minions hacked through my dog-meat shield, and quickly dispatched my 2 defense soldiers. But my dogs were taking a toll on Saint's expensive Kyrie - I felt that I was only rolling average for the plague (25%), but the fact that it applies to each hound was invaluable, as my hounds on glyphs were able to kill Minions and Sentinels (and Marro Drudge!) without even being activated.
Cyprien didn't even see an OM, as the hounds were able to take out the remaining Minion and Atlaga all be their bony selves.

Although I felt favored going into this one (auto-wounds ftw), I was pretty lucky, as once again, I got full move from my hounds each time except for one instance. Go, Dogs, Go!

Game 3, Ice Thistle vs Ben

Ben was fielding a effective, motley bunch - x2 Minions, x1 Greenscales, Nilfheim, and Marro Warriors.

Round 1 I got the drop and initiative. My Airborne Elite must have felt bad for letting me down last game with their grenades, as this time, they destroyed 4 Minions and 2 Marro Warriors. Ouch.
It wasn't over yet though, as Nilfheim was out for revenge. The dragon king literally rolled 3 or 4 skulls each special attack activation. Hounds and soldiers (and Dzu-teh) were falling, but my very last hound brought him down (and was subsequently destroyed immediately after). I was out of hounds and AE, and still had to take out a lone minion and two Marro, so Cyprien got to come out and close this game.

Just like the previous games, the hounds rolled average plague, but only failed to get full movement one time. "Who are my good boys? You are my good boys!" - Ne-Gok-Sa and me. And it may have been a very different game if not for the AE's exceptional grenade volley. But I'll take it!

Game 4, Lava Crag vs @Scaperedude

Although he's a superior player, I felt good going into this game - my hounds had battled Minions the two previous games, so they really had their scent and were ready for Scaperedude's corrupted Kyrie. Scaperedude was fielding x3 Minions, Kaemon Awa, and Marro Warriors. He was reminded of the potential of the Airborne Elite, and arranged his start zone so that their bombardments couldn't be effective, and off we went.

I got the drop (but not initiative), and tried for a grenade volley. Between him moving out some Minions with his first OM and his startzone placement, it was not very effective. They got a few hits in with the 2 OMs I had given them (1-2 Minions, 1 wound of Kaemon), but were not worth their 110 points. Can't win 'em all boys!

Round 2 I did something I hadn't done yet that day - I put OMs on the wandering monsters (Obsidian Guards, in this case). I won initiative (which later was determined to be very key), and engaged Minions with lava monsters! 3 attacks of 4 is no joke, and they bagged 2 Minions. Scaperedude revealed his OM 1 on the guards as well, and they retraced their steps and took down 2 hounds! My OM 2 was on the guards again, and they hustled back the way they had come, killing 2 more minions! Scaperedude did not, however, have his OM 2 on the Guards, so he spent the next OM actually hacking at the guards he was engaged to, taking down one of them. My hounds moved up a bit (though this map was not double-base friendly. But what map is?).

Round 3 had me taking out the remaining minions with hounds and Obsidian Guards again (it's so sad how mediocre they are on normal maps vs how insane they are on lava maps). A few hounds snuck (sneaked?) into the start zone to plague/attack Kaemon and Marro Warriors, and although they took out two Marro, they were rebuffed by the Samurai.

Round 4! I was out of Hounds, AE, and there was only a lone Obsidian Guard wandering around. But why not utilize the magma golem? He was within range of Kaemon, after all! So once again, I doled out an OM to the wandering monster. He failed to wound Kaemon, but tied him down nicely. Cyprien crept in, taking advantage of a distracted Kaemon (who was busy taking out his high-temperature assailant), and offed the noble warrior. He then chilled the remaining Marro Warriors to lead my auto-wounding army to victory!

* Addendum for @Sir Heroscape - your map was cool! With lava maps, I feel the key is to make the lava relevant without being annoying, and to provide for some different tactics. Your map did just that! Pretty simple, pretty fun, and aesthetically pleasing.
Something random to note though - in the picture and instructions, there are battlements, but it doesn't say that a FotA is required to build the map on the download page. *

Marrden Hounds were my MVPs. Each game they rolled their highest move each time except for once. Each round they rolled about average for the plague. But most important, I faced the right enemies - high cost squads (Minions of Utgar everywhere!) and no Soulborg. Looking at the possible opponents around the room, I literally faced the 4 that my army would be best against (especially thankful I did not face Cannon and his Soulborg army. That would've been practically an auto-lose). And although I didn't use OMs on wandering monsters until the very last game, I thought the format was great. Until next month, amigos!

In the game against me, the grenades killed 6 Sharpshooters. 165 points in a single turn. They also wounded laglor to near death, and he died on your next turn. I had thought I had a chance, but you killed all but one squad the moment the airborne came close.

Every game was kind of the same. It would start out even, and as soon as Laglor started to be attacked, my rolls, would be bad, and the opponents rolls would be good. Even in the one game I won, I only just barely won, with a single sharpshooter left.

Haha it may have felt like 6 dudes, but it couldn't have been more than 5 - after the bombs dropped, you were still able to attack with a full squad (and I had destroyed at least one 53rd before the grenading). Still a very devastating attack, for sure. It was the normal attacks from height that did the ape in!

Great tournament @The Dewk ! You soundly whooped me in that last game, congrats!! Though my win streak has been broken, the rock paper scissors we have going still stands!! (I beat @BiggaBullfrog , @BiggaBullfrog beats @The Dewk , and @The Dewk always beats me XD !!)

@Leaf_It has finished figuring out the details for June's monthly! Bring your swarming armies (or anti-swarming units!). Change of location from where we have previously held them, and I'm excited to see what this game store has to offer!

Location: Demolition Games (83 W 3300 S, Salt Lake City)

When: June 24th, 11 AM

Cost: $5 (100% of entries will go to prize support! And donating prizes is always quite welcome as well, of course.)

Format: No Figure Limit

- 450 point armies
- No figure limit, but Deathreavers & 4th Massachusetts Line cannot be in the same army.
