Re: AoA:Vanguard Campaign Postmortem

I don't work at Hasbro or anything, but I am pretty sure this could have been handled much better.

Mistakes:
Only one product, the $250 bundle. It should have been split into multiple master sets, with expansion packs including some extra terrain or figures. This model would have allowed for a lower barrier to entry for new customers, and a larger incentive for multiple purchases from old fans (as they could get more terrain or figures).
With roughly 500,000 heroscapers out there (469,000 on this website and some others scattered throughout), it would not be difficult to have each person contribute $16 dollars and then we would have the 8 million for the crowdfunding. The issue is that A) not everybody knew about this, B) some people were dissatisfied with the unpainted minis [I didn't consider this to be a major issue personally, but could understand the complaints], and C) very few new customers were likely to have bought this product. A twitter post, a youtube video, some instagram posts, and facebook ads all seemed to go a long way towards getting the word out, and us heroscapers also spread the word, but I think that many former fans of the game who might not be in the loop would have been able to completely miss the game coming out. Also, the large master set size could be daunting to new players.

Successes
The community got involved with the War Council and Polls
Cool cards were designed
Cool figures were made
Big promises were made
Hype was generated

Going forward, I think that either A) Avalon Hill will abandon Heroscape and this will be the last commercial revival attempt we see, B) the rights to Heroscape are sold, probably to Soaring Mammoth, or C) Avalon Hill re-attempts Heroscape under a new name with some variations to try and capture the old audience while being more commercially viable.

Re: AoA:Vanguard Campaign Postmortem

There are absolutely not 469,000 Heroscapers on this website. There's probably like 4,000 and 465,000 porn bots.

C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

There are definitely not very many HSers out in the world, relative to gaming. We're pretty niche.

And 3 porn bots that actually like Heroscape. They're out there, but it's really too small a group to be relied on as a market.

I would agree, but only if you define "Heroscaper" as someone with some combination of the following: regularly visits heroscapers.com, anticipates C3V or SOV releases, hosts or attends Heroscape tournaments, has a Heroscape tattoo, named their child after a Heroscape character, has a dedicated Heroscape room in their house, and/or backed the Haslab regardless of campaign missteps.

We are niche indeed.

However, there are multitudes more folks out there that enjoy playing the game, would buy it, and don't meet any of those criteria.

The reality is that most out there who have stopped keeping up with the game are former heroscapers. Some may still have their copies, but for most it's in storage or sold already. That's just my 2c as someone who does know several people who enjoy heroscape and used to have it, but almost none who still play but aren't engaged on the forums or tournaments/ meetups.

Re: AoA:Vanguard Campaign Postmortem

The reality is also that even a lot of the folks on here are not active "Heroscape" players. A lot of people are here just to interact socially out of previous affection for the game, are not active at all despite being registered on the site, or in some cases only play customs (many C3Gers have told me they've never played Valhalla stuff at all, in fact).

C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

Why didn't they bring out GI Joe 'scape? That's something I've been trying to figure out since this all began.

With the multitude of GI Joe fans out there and the roughly 3000 on this site that could have easily brought back 'scape and set up both Marvel and Valhalla scape as well.

But this is just back seat driving while looking out the back window.

Just when you thought it was all right, someone made it alright.

Good trades with - Porkins / xraine69 / mac122 (x2) / frylock / Ztimster (x2) and probably others I forgotten to mention...sorry.

Re: AoA:Vanguard Campaign Postmortem

AOA has certainly brought many back to Scaping. I remember someone playing another board game here years ago, looking at my large tubs of Heroscape terrain and saying "I've got to get back to Heroscape." But he never did, at least not with us here.

But now two of the three new members of my local group (see my signature line below) are returning Scapers. Only one is actually new as such, and he was initiated into the mysteries by one of the others!

If they’d brought out gi joe scape, and then only managed to raise the tiny number of over a million dollars against a two million dollar goal, everyone would be saying that it would have surely succeeded if they’d only stuck to what the fans really wanted, more classic designs.

In my opinion the real problem with the campaign was the two million dollar target and the $250 minimum buy in, not the actual product on offer.
