Re: Custom pillars
Looks like you looked into it.
For some reason I remember the interlocking tiles having a copyright. I believe that is why the Kickstarter that had new Heroscape-compatible terrain did not use it. Could be wrong though. Also not a lawyer. If that is the case it really opens some opportunities for customs. Regardless those pillars are super sweet. Re: Custom pillars
Thanks for the kind words and the feedback! We will look into making them slightly more loose in the future, if the tightness causes damage after use don't hesitate to let me know.

Unfortunately, there is a patent on the tile design, by Craig Van Ness and assigned to Hasbro, not just a copyright, which places imitations in a much greyer area, and opens up more severe penalties. Abstract: Quote:
The patent images (sample) are clearly Heroscape tiles, and other images clearly show the interlocking tab-and-cutout structure of the edges, how the tiles fit together, and how they stack. |

Re: Custom pillars
Hey guys, I'm the other half of this pillars project. Thanks so much for the feedback! It's great to know other people are as excited about the design as I am.
I thought I'd weigh in on the patent issue. The key is that the patent is an ornamental design patent, not a utility patent. As such, it does not protect the utility of the pieces, but only the looks and patterns. As long as we aren't reproducing actual HS pieces, we should be fine. |

Re: Custom pillars
You and your friend are unusually sensible for people doing this kind of work.

Re: Custom pillars
Haha, thanks. Probably overkill, but we want to do it right.
