aerofool Woo who?
My concearn is for the young, new player without a large ammount of disposable income. They go to a friends house and play the game once, like it and beg their parents to get them a master set. They get SotM for $40 (no sales in this scenario). After playing a few games, they find this site and stumble accross a thread discussing the wonders of 3+ stingers and how nagrubs must be fielded in 4+ units. Instead of getting what they need in $10 blisters, they have to fork out another $40 to get what they want in these units. They do get more nifty terrain, but this also leaves them with doubles of 7 uniques (hive included) that they can't give away because most anyone will ever need is one of each. Anytime you have to buy something which contains an item or items you don't need you will feel like you've wasted at least part of your money. If you gotta have commons in the master set, make every squad and hero common. Otherwise stick with all uniques.

****! I must be having a bad week!

Interesting point. When I bought 8 RotV, it always irritated me that the figures were all unique. To me the draw was the terrain so I kept buying, knowing I was wasting part of my money. The commons were a nice addition in the new master set, but not enough terrain.

There has to be a middle ground somewhere. such as: Good amount and variety of terrain. Common squads with a couple unique heroes thrown in that fit the overall theme of the set. All is well with the world then. And did I mention we need more TREES!?!

Honestly, if they're really planning on releasing those all terrain sets, unique might be the best way to go in Master sets. Again, it's just those unique terrain items (like if they sold jungle trees in a Master set) that would make me want to see Master sets with commons in it, so less of the money would be on unusable repeat uniques. This really is a quandry.

C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

I think this is the best solution. There'd be three main kinds of product:

1. Master Sets- An introduction to the game with varied product. All uniques. To be sold in big box stores, as well as hobby shops. Unique squads and a handful of heroes would stand side-by-side with eye-popping double-based figures a la Aquilla's Alliance. Lots of varied hex tiles. Maybe 2-3 cheap, effective LoS blockers. Uniques would synergize well with common squads that are released in other waves, much like RotV-> Wave 1&2

2. Terrain expansions- Trees, sand dunes, etc... try to keep tiles that can be found in the master sets to a minimum. Should be designed to increase the number of LoS blockers, and add interesting new rules to gameplay.

3. Common figure expansions- Could be released much like the current waves, or perhaps like Zombies/Ashigaru were. I'd like to see more Common Heroes- that's a cool mechanic.

I'd be hard pressed to disagree that you probably have the best of all the worlds there, Jexik. The only knock I see is that it doesn't really encourage anyone to buy multiple Master sets, which might not be good from a marketing/sales standpoint for Hasbro.

C3G can be played with official Heroscape, but it's not recommended.

It would just as much as RotV does now . Just shift the focus slightly to a new terrain tile (Rock, Sand, or perhaps something new like Metal ), and I'm sure that people would still buy a couple. I think it'd be more important that the new MS makes you want to buy the new waves.

Even thought I knew the second master set would be a worse investment than the first, I bought it anyway. At the time it was "I need more regular terrain. Where do I get it? Another Master Set." So I bought another Master Set. I don't think if you want the terrain, the fact that the figures are all unique is going to deter you, ask the guys with over 10 master sets. I think having commons in a master set is a sort of added bonus though.

Jugger

It's like football with swords or LARPing without the geeky stuff. In other words, it's awesomely perfect!

I guess with so many considering RotV the "perfect" Master set, it's hard to argue that point. I thought it was nice in SotM to have something different and get "instant" sets of commons, but I think if commons shifted to more zombie like packaging (double sets per booster) that would go a long way towards accomplishing the same thing without me having to purchase anything redundant.

To keep your customer base happy, you create Master Sets that don't make customers FEEL REQUIRED to buy additional Master Sets. You design Master Sets that do make customers COMPELLED to buy additional master sets. And the way get from Required to Compelled is no commons in a Master Set and having terrain features (quality and quantity) people would like to buy more of.

DUND is underestimated and under-rated.

I am really suprised at the difference in opinion on the common vs. unique figures in a master set. I want to see a poll on that subject alone.

I think that's probably a really good idea, DJSmith. I wish I knew for sure which way I lined up on that issue!

I'm more interested in the reasoning why.

When someone tells me that they like the commons in SotM because it encourages repeat buys, and then I find out that they have twice as many RotV's on their shelf as SotM, that tells me far more than a poll ever would.
