I tried making built in ladders by cutting slots in the foam. I attempted using slots for fastening so that it could be easily taken apart. That actually worked pretty good and would be better with careful cutting. I think it is either 8 or 9 levels per story, mainly so you can your hands in there. I need to get a new pic, I think I was just trying to show the custom ladders when I took it. I see now that the top floor/roof is held with T-pins. That is a recent experiment for fastening.

You have to be careful because a lot of paints and adhesives 'melt' the foam.
Valspar has a line of textured paint that works. Re: McMeeple's Custom Building Terrain - Pizza Joint
With all due respect, I'd like to point out that while all of the these other suggestions sound interesting, at the end of the day you'll want others to actually be able to build these structures. Otherwise what was the point of going to all the trouble to create and post them in the first place?
Back when I first started creating and engineering a building, if I was faced with a decision about how to proceed, I always choose the easiest possible route (while making sure I didn't sacrifice quality and playability). Once finished I created step by step plans, listed all the materials, etc., all in an effort to make them as easy as I possibly could for someone else to printout and assemble. After all I've had great times gaming on them, and I really wanted others that enjoy that type of gaming experience to have them as well. With that said I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Wow, your buildings look great, but I could never do that. I'm arts and crafts challenged." * So be prepared, you won't solve this inertia problem, especially if your to be shared structures are too challenging to build. With that said, if you're building these just for yourself then make your structures as complicated as you want. But if you are attempting to create buildings that are universally accepted (as if they were officially produced), and you want them built consistently across the board, you might be in trouble with complicated designs and ideas. Anyway, just my simple word of advice to C3G. Take it for what it's worth. _________________________________________________________ * On a personal note I had to face the fact that while I was playing and creating terrain for a miniature combat game, others here were really only playing a basic board game and did not want to invest the time and energy to assemble even simple boxes. The few of us who here that enjoy the miniature combat game aspect of Heroscape have enjoyed the ability to expand the game into something even more special than it already is. I'm honored that a few of you have joined me on this past, 10 year long ride, and have enjoyed gaming in this fashion and with what I've created. Buildings, terrain that you can interact with, figures that work well within those rules, flocking official terrain to improve it's visual appeal, etc., that's what excites me about this game. Not to put down what others here are doing but personally, and unfortunately, I find that most of the content being created on this site really doesn't interest me, it tends towards more of the board gamey aspect of Heroscape. It's kinda why my participation here has wained somewhat of late. Of well, to each his own right? Anyway, sorry to deviate from the intent of your thread McMeeple! I'll stop now. I'm thrilled that you've taken the time to share what you've accomplished with my system of buildings for Heroscape. Perhaps I'll pass the mantle on to you! This is an excellent reminder. I have several projects in mind (such as an absurdly huge Empire State Building) that I want to make someday, but I see no purpose in trying to structure it as something to share in a formal way. Simplicity of production seems like such a key to keep in mind. Otherwise, as you said, there is not much point in putting all the work in packaging things up to share. This theme is part of what motivated me to create the 3 part mechanic shop. It's simple, but easily configured into countless setups. This approach / mentality leads to the idea that you have a fixed set of structures in terms of dimensions...and then you crank out sets of themes that go onto them. One could have a Gotham theme, TMNT theme, zombie apocalypse theme and so on. High on my list is to put together a documented set of standards that simply outline the dimensions and details that go into making a building design. And things like the maximum sizes that will fit on a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper. If only for my own sake. Finally, this point you made is exactly why I have avoided the idea of interior spaces on the buildings. it just seems too complicated and for me, not worth it. (Though my son disagrees, he wants to go inside the buildings!!!!). It is neat to see what others are doing in this case, but for me personally it just isn't the direction I plan to go. Quote:
I honestly hadn't thought of it this way. But that makes good sense. I know not everyone is willing to go to all this work to make extras for the game, but it sure doesn't seem like a simple 'Board game" any more! Quote:
It's all good. I have had a fun time thinking of ways to extend what you did. As I have mentioned before I love to make things, so it was inevitable that I create my own designs. Having them fit in with yours and hopefully other folks designs is just an added bonus! That said you set the bar high, your designs have an amazing level of detail that is difficult to achieve. To suggest that I might carry your mantle is humbling and inspiring to say the least. |

As for doing a wood version that would just be a sturdier version of whatever we create for public and I'd do it because I like wood working and look for any excuse. Would I want it to be everything I love...sure...but that's just not realistic so I'm going to focus on finding things that will make me unhappy and work on fixing those. |

That is exactly my situation. To me it is a lot of fun to build them out of wood. Much more so then foam at this point.

Re: McMeeple's Custom Building Terrain - Pizza Joint
Hey
@japes
what are some of the limits or restrictions C3G is trying to work with? I checked that area of the forum and it doesn't seem like there has been any talk in a while. It seems like we have a group of people in this topic with plenty of decent brainstorming. Maybe somebody can put together a topic about brainstorming and general what works, what doesnt just for modern/city terrain.

Heh.
I have been contemplating starting a new thread for this. Looks like it would be a good idea. A cloud can change its semblance, yet retain its will With the intimacy of destruction, One knows what it is to be alive The empty sky holds no reflection, for sorrow - Eslo Rudkey |
