Re: Lawton/Fort Sill (monthly?) Heroscape Tournament

November 14th, The Results Show!

Well, this months little tournament came and went. The End.

Ok, no really, it was a blast. We had a few cancellations, including from a couple of our regulars, but still had 12 players on the fields. Somehow we ran real early, so instead of running 3 40-minute matches, we added a 4th. Our Top 3 were:
  1. Tory: 4-0. running 4 squads of Minions of Utgar. That’s it.
  2. James: 3-1 running the Marro Hive, Drones, Naggrubs and Dividers. His only loss was to Tory.
  3. Michael L. 3-1 Who ran Charos, Aubrian Archers, Warriors of Ashra and Arkmer
Our Fellowship Prize went to a new player, a gentleman named Brian (who had never played before today). He ran a Vydar team of Q-10, Microcorp Agents, Krav Maga Agents and Agent Carr and managed to go 2-2.

Also, I try and watch all the matches. They are (usually) a lot of fun. One match really stood out today, it was between Tory and Goosebumps (Sarah). She is by far our youngest player, but has been playing for the last year in just about every tournament. Her team included Iskra E, Rechets, Khosmet Darklord, Anubian Wolves, Deathstalkers and a Dumutef Guard. Their battle came down to the very last units (with one figure on the field for each player when time ran out). It was a GREAT match!

Thanks, as always, to everyone who came out and played, and to Karen and Greg for letting us turn their store upside down for a few hours.

Our next tournament will be December 12th @ 12:30.
I’ll update the top of Post #1 with details on that tournament, but I should note that my son James will be marshalling this one (he wants me to play a few), so be warned. It will be weird I’m sure.

Re: Lawton/Fort Sill (monthly?) Heroscape Tournament

It is a simple rotation system where players with similar Win/Loss ratios end up playing against each other. IE: if you have 2 Wins and 1 Loss, it's likely that your opponent will have a similar ratio as well.

Re: Lawton/Fort Sill (monthly?) Heroscape Tournament

Glad I could help. As for CA, can't say that I do. I havn't been out to California since the 80's, but there are plenty of threads in the Events section, I'd look around. Good hunting...

Re: Lawton/Fort Sill (monthly?) Heroscape Tournament

December 12th, The Birthday Game!

Well, this month’s tournament stared out a little strange. My (17 year old) son decided to run the tournament so that I could play, you see 12/12 is my birthday, so he thought it would be nice for a change. Set up and all went as normal, then JUST before play was supposed to start, I was bombarded with birthday wishes (including singing-planned and started by Karen, the store owner), cupcakes and other sweets and some wonderful presents. It really was wonderful. Thanks Everyone.

Anyway, the tournament itself.
We had an average turnout, originally only 9 were signed up, but 14 ended up playing.
Our Top 3 for this one were:
  • Grundypepper: 5-0. Running a “blue squad” of Omnicron Repulsors, Snipers, Zetacron and a squad of Deathstalkers thrown in for fun.
  • Robert: 4-1. He had a mixed squad of Major Q-10, some 10th Regiment and a few Deathreavers.
  • Me. 3-2. I ran some 10th Regiment, Zelrig and Deadeye Dan.
Our Fellowship Prize when to yet another new player, a young chap named Donevan, who came in with Jeremy. I hope Donevan returns, he seems like a nice kid. Smart and had real nice manners.

I have to say that people were surprised by Zelrig, who reduced most everyone’s forces in half in the first few rounds, but my two losses came at the hands of Grundypepper whose Omnicron’s I just could not stop for some reason (Grundy is also a great tactician, and a really fun loving guy to play against).

As always, a special Thanks to Karen and Greg for allowing us to come and play in Carolina Comics this month, we tried to keep things clean (especially with the birthday snack foods in store this time). And Karen, I’ll get even with you for ambushing me on my birthday, just you wait!
(insert 1930's "B" movie villain laugh here)

Our next tournament will be January 9th @ 12:30.

I’ll update the top of Post #1 with details on that tournament.

Re: Lawton/Fort Sill (monthly?) Heroscape Tournament

January 9th, 2010!

Ok, so 2010 is here, but strangely no HAL or Discovery. Maybe this isn’t the year we make contact.
But we did make contact with the new D&D Master Set, which was in full swing. Carolina Comics is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so we had to wait until Wednesday to get our sets, that left only a few days to soak in the new stuff before the tournament, but it was there.

One thing about our fields, I usually try and post a card with any special rules you need to be aware of when playing on said field, and the Dungeon Field I created was no different, only I added two fun (house) rules in keeping with the whole “dungeon” theme. One was no flying (low ceiling and all), all figures had to walk. The other was Darkness, adapting the Light Source Special Rule from the Adventure (figures at a range of 5 or more do not have any visible hit zones). Much to my relief, people enjoyed these very much and the Dungeon Field was popular.

The tournament.
We had an EXCELLENT turnout, with 13 being signed up, but 16 actually playing. 3 different people came and watched, but didn’t play and we had a return of Larry L and his son Kevin from down in the Falls, who came up once before. Young Mr. Patrick and Brin also made a return visits to the tournaments! Wonderful to see people coming back!
Our Top 3 for this one were:
  • Larry L. 5-0. He ran a Granite Guardians heavy squad, aided by Deadeye Dan and Warden 816.
  • Brin. 4-1. Brin had Orc army (must have been watching LotR’s while creating it) which had Nerak, Mimring, Grimnak, Ornak and a lot of Gruts.
  • Jeremy. 4-1. He ran a (mostly) Vydar army of Major’s Q10 and X17, Gladitrons and Blastrons, backed up by Otonashi and Isamu.
Our Fellowship Prize when to Tearza this month. She had a real bad go this tournament, but is here every month with a smile on her face and a unique team to try out.

I want to throw a shout out to Butch, who didn’t even realize we had a tournament Saturday. He just walked in like he normally does and said “...oh, are we playing today?” Didn’t have anything with him, so he purchased a D&D Master and played using it. He was 30 points down from the max, but had a blast. He got cleaned this time (having a day much like the Cleveland Browns), but he’s such a great sport and just a lot of fun at the tables. Thanks for playing Bud!

As always, we couldn't do any of this without the support of Karen and Greg, for letting us play up at Carolina Comics. Greg did a bunch of remodeling over the Christmas Break, making a lot more space for us gamers to come in and we are VERY Grateful.

Our next tournament will be February 6th @ 12:30.

I’ll update the top of Post #1 with details on that tournament.

Kevin and I had a great time and we plan to be back in the future.

Carolina comics is a great store and their support for the Lawton group is obvious.

Thanks,

Larry L.
