Can't you play anyway, and use byes? (Think of it as adding a particularly weak player to the mix - call him Ollie2, say. Ollie2 goes into the mix as if he existed, but loses every game. The draw needs to make sure that noone gets two games against Ollie2, but other than that it should be pretty easy to implement. Everyone gets at least four competitive games, and most still get five.)
