I see this sentiment a lot and I don't really understand it. Almost all of my favorite armies are a healthy mix of unique heroes and common squads.

I know this expanded on in replies, but I dislike common squads because of meta game abuse.
Spam the best units to the exclusion of all else, kind of common squads.
But I think win at all costs tourney players who bring lean lists are to blame for common squads being reviled rather than common squads themselves.
