Re: The Book of Statesman (public playtest)
C3G STANDARD PLAYTEST FEEDBACK FORM
NAME OF THE PLAYTEST UNIT : STATESMAN
Army Test
Map : City Park (No Glyphs)
Units :
Statesman (250), Positron (220), Manticore (130)
= 700
VS.
Cosmic Boy (260), Timber Wolf (260), Lightning Lad (180)
= 700
Spoiler Alert!
Pre-Game Thoughts/Preview : All 3 of the Legionnaires can put out some solid offense. Disabling Timber Wolf with Manticore will be useful, same with taking out Cosmic Boy early.
Damage Done (Normal Attack) : Used 2 time, 2 wounds to TImber Wolf.
FREEDOM PHALANX : Used 2 times.
TANKER : Not directly used, but influenced the enemy into attacking Statesman instead of his allies.
HAMMER OF JUSTICE N/A
ROUND 1 : Legion initiative.
Movement on OM 1 from each team. Statesman is ahead of his allies, Lightning Lad and Timber Wolf attack him but fail to wound. Statesman wounds Timber Wolf. Timber Wolf gets 3 attacks on Statesman and deals 3 wounds to him. Round ends with Positron dealing a wound to Timber Wolf.
ROUND 2 : Phalanx initiative.
Positron tries to get height for an attack on Timber Wolf, but Cosmic Boy throws him to the low ground. Cosmic Boy then takes out Statesman. Positron weathers quite a few attacks, but goes down as well.
ROUND 3 : Phalanx initiative.
Manticore is running and shooting, some height and lucky attack rolls lets him take out Timber Wolf.
ROUND 4 : Legion initiative.
Cosmic Boy takes out Manticore in one shot. Legionnaires win!
Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Cosmic Boy 4/4 Life, Lightning Lad 4/4 Life
Post-Game Thoughts : Tough game, those Legionnaires put out some great offense at 700 points. Statesman weathered some attacks in the early game, but I feel like 5 Life/7 Defense is a bit squishy for him. I’m going to run another 700 point test, if I still think he’s a little soft I’ll try him at 6 Life/7 Defense in the 1000 point game.
Army Test
Map : City Park (No Glyphs)
Units :
Statesman (250), Positron (220), Manticore (130)
= 700
VS.
TMNT
= 700
Spoiler Alert!
Pre-Game Thoughts/Preview : The TMNT are pretty versatile, slowing them with Glue Arrows and dealing good damage with Positron/Statesman will be the key I think.
Damage Done (Normal Attack) : Used 1 time, 3 wounds to Mikey
FREEDOM PHALANX :
TANKER : Used 1 time, took 1 wound for Manticore.
HAMMER OF JUSTICE Used 2 times, 2 wounds to Leo.
ROUND 1 : TMNT initiative.
Early movement. Manticore glues Mikey and attacks him, no wounds. Positron gets 2 wounds on Donny. Raph, Leo, and Statesman move up. Positron throws another attack at Donny and takes him out.
ROUND 2 : TMNT initiative.
Mikey goes deep and would wound Manticore, but Statesman takes the hit. Mikey takes 3 wounds from Statesman, Raph takes 1 from Manticore. Mikey can’t wound Manticore, Positron takes him out. Leo and Raph go for Positron but can’t wound him. Statesman uses Hammer of Justice to push Leo adjacent to Raph, and then Positron uses Neutron Bomb on them.
ROUND 3 : Phalanx initiative.
Statesman fails to wound Leo or Raph with a 2nd Hammer of Justice, but Positron takes down Leo. With OM 1 on Leo, Positron gets another attack off and takes Raph out with it. Freedom Phalanx wins!
Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): Statesman 4/5 Life, Manticore 4/4 Life, Positron 4/4 Life
Post-Game Thoughts : Very dominant win here by the Phalanx. I think the turtles didn’t really have the offense to punch through Statesman’s defense, so they went after Manticore and Positron with little success. They also were having straight up bad rolls. Gonna keep Statesman at 5 Life/7 Defense for the 1000 point game.
Army Test
Map : City Park (No Glyphs)
Units :
Statesman (250), Positron (220), Manticore (130), Poison (300)
= 1000
VS.
Fantastic Four
= 1000
Spoiler Alert!
Pre-Game Thoughts/Preview : Wanted to pair the Phalanx with an autowounder, since that looks like their biggest weakness. Strong OM efficiency from each team here.
Damage Done (Normal Attack) : Used 2 times, 5 wounds to Invisible Woman, 2 wounds to Mr. Fantastic
FREEDOM PHALANX : Used a few times while he was engaged with Mr. F and The Thing
TANKER : Not directly used, but had Statesman eating attacks instead of his teammates.
HAMMER OF JUSTICE Used 1 time, no wounds
ROUND 1 : Fantastic Four initiative.
Both teams move up with some cautious positioning. There’s some poking, but no wounds from either side.
ROUND 2 : Phalanx initiative.
Statesman flies above Mr. Fantastic to go for Invisible Woman, she whiffs her defense roll and goes down in one shot. Human Torch flies adjacent to Poison and Positron, and deals 1 wound to Positron with his normal attack. Mr. Fantastic moves adjacent to Statesman to tie him down, and deals 1 wound. Poison deals 1 wound to Torch with his Spider Stingers. Torch takes some 3 wounds from disengaging from Positron and Poison, they each take 2 wounds from Flame On. Since he’s heavily wounded, Torch uses Supernova on Positron and Poison. 2 wounds to Poison. Positron fails to kill Torch. Manticore cleans him up though. Thing ends the round by dealing 3 wounds to Statesman, leaving him with 1 life.
ROUND 3 : Phalanx initiative.
Positron flies onto the water height in the center but fails to wound Thing. Statesman deals 2 wounds to Mr. Fantastic. Mr. Fantastic fails to wound Statesman. Manticore and Positron fail to wound Mr. Fantastic. The Thing pulverizes Statesman. Manticore Flash Arrows Mr. F, but doesn’t wound. Positron deals 1 wound, leaving Mr. F at 1 life. The Thing finishes the round by taking out Positron.
ROUND 4 : Phalanx initiative.
Poison swings adjacent to Mr. F, but fails both of his Spider Stinger rolls. Poison opts to not roll defense, but he dies to a big attack roll from The Thing. Manticore takes 1 wound from Mr. F before teleporting away. The round ends with The Thing engaging Manticore but failing to wound.
ROUND 5 : Phalanx initiative.
Manticore puts up a solid fight and manages to kill Mr. F, but he dies quickly after The Thing catches him. Fantastic Four wins!
Who won? List figures remaining in the winning army (include life remaining for heroes): The Thing 6/6 Life
Post-Game Thoughts : Really fun game. I thought the Phalanx had it after Statesman blew up Invisible Woman, but the FF pulled it back. A competitive game against a strong army like the Fantastic Four has me feeling good about the Freedom Phalanx + some allies at 1000 points.
Thoughts on the Tested Unit's Cost, Balance, and Draftability : I think he feels good. You’re not going to be using Tanker/Hammer of Justice every game, but I think the threat of those powers is part of their strength, which means Statesman is often going to eat attacks for his allies. I think the 5 Life/7 Def is a good spot for him, he still feels like a really durable fella.
General Thoughts on the Tested Unit : I’m happy with how the trio feels as a team. It feels like Statesman is the flying brick that’s there to eat hits and hit hard, Positron has a little more nuance to his damage but he can do some hits while being decently durable, and Manticore is the support piece that disables foes and survives into the late game. I was worried they're a bit swingy after the first two games, but the third one has me feeling good.
