THE PATRON’S GALLERY – Interview with CrazieCory

I have been blessed to know a few very talented artists (mini painter doesn’t seem right for the level of detail and creativity) and I am thankful that they shared their skill and enhanced my Heroscape collection.

One of those artist is Cory, a friend and fellow gamer for 15 years now. Cory and I have played RPG’s, LARPed, and played many hours of board & card games. I couldn’t quite get him into Heroscape (though he loved the Warforged and was very pro-Vydar), but I did end up with some fantastic repainted figures.

OH: What was your catalyst for getting into gaming?
CC: I was probably about 10 or 11 when my Aunt gave me a copy of “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.”

OH: You mean the ‘choose your own adventure’ book?! I totally played those around the same time.
CC: Yep! Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone’s series and I ended up with a bunch in those.

OH: When did you start painting?
CC: I was probably 12 years old when the painting-bug hit. I loved watching Bob Ross ..
OH: The PBS guy?
CC: Same. I started doing paint by numbers with oil paints. Some of the very first miniatures I ever painted were from Grenadier. The very first one I painted I used left over oils from a paint by number I had... took forever to dry. http://oldguygaming.com/images/grenadier/5001.jpg

OH: How about commission painting?
CC: My grandfather helped me set up my first painting area. I started painting for my first gaming group. In high school I would set up at the local game shop and paint for folks. This was before acrylics and I was thinning Testors paints with gasoline (which is not a good idea).

CC: This was before YouTube (1980’s). You had to pick up painting tips from a few pages out of Dragon Magazine. The first time I did a wash it was “instant awesome.” And just learning out to hold a brush was through lots of practice.

CC: I would paint a whole army, play it in a game or event, and then someone would want to buy it off me. I made just a little more than it cost to put it together and paint it – but I would sell it and then buy something new to paint.

OH: Do you have any preferred brands that you use in your work?
CC: I used Citadel paints for years but recently I’ve been working with Vallejo paints. For miniatures, the Reaper line has always been favorite; they have such great, highly detailed figs.

OH: What are some of your favorite miniature or wargame lines?
CC: I was hooked early on by Necromunda and still regret selling off that collection. This lead into 40K and Warhammer Fantasy and Mordheim. I really enjoyed the Scavvies because you could customize the mutations.

OH: Cory, thank you for taking some time for this interview and for all of the amazing work that you’ve done on my commissions.
CC: You’re welcome. This was a trip down memory lane and I feel inspired to do some more painting.
