Try to build something where the terrain has quad-spaces built-in, but you can put hexes under or over it., kind like ozzy-scape's ruined church.
Spoiler Alert!

The materials I used were MDF (medium density fibreboard), dowel, real wood, paint, gravel and sand. The tools ranged from a Jigsaw and Dremel, to lots of PVA glue and trial-and-error. Here's how it started...
I chose a church because it lends itself to pretty much most game scenarios. Heroscape is my main passsion, but I've also got Heroclix and AT-43 stuff as well. Here it is after some paint...
The tiled floor doubles as a chess board - making for one of the coolest chess games around. I haven't glazed the floor yet - it'll look shiny and 'ceramic' afterwards - hopefully.
And the sections pull apart to become a cityscape (the reversible game board is also MDF - with a lot of Dremel work).
Please share your thoughts - I'd appreciate the feedback. Also, if you want more or better photos simply ask - I didn't want to post too many until I got some interest. Also - you'll notice some funky terrain that looks like a hex-grid surrounded by crystals in one of the pics, that's the work of Leifkicker (of Heroscapers and ebay fame). I've purchased a few of his great works including a massive cemetery set - great stuff and a great guy to do business with.
Cheers,
G.
